Subject: Prayers requested this Reformation Day

Last week, Kolpanny, Russia was rocked by a factory explosion that decimated all the buildings in the immediate area... except one.

Still standing is the Lutheran church, the only building in the area to remain fully intact, its steeple a stark contrast to the rubble surrounding it. Inside the building remains a large storage area of LHF's Russian language books, including the Book of Concord and Luther's Small Catechism.

While the church has some damage, LHF's books are safe – a witness of God's powerful Word.

Grant then, O God, where'er men roam,
That, when the church-bells are ringing,
Many in saving faith may come
Where Christ His message is bringing:
"I know Mine own, Mine own know Me;
Ye, not the world, My face shall see.
My peace I leave with you." Amen.

LHF TRANSLATOR ATTACKED

Rev. Mohammed Gurhan, LHF's translator for Somalia, has suffered a physical attack. He writes [with some details omitted for his protection]:

"Dear brothers in the Lord, on Sept. 27, I went to [the city] for a court decision related to my property against two Islamist mullahs (teachers). On October 3, the court reached a verdict in favor of me. Around noon when I left the courthouse, a mob of mullahs attacked me with stones and wounded me severely. I lost a lot of blood and was hospitalised for three days.

"Although I recovered and feel much better than the last four weeks, still I sometimes feel dizziness and get tired. Three of those mullahs who attacked me are now in police custody waiting for a court trial. The property was being used as a safe house to accommodate those who have run away from persecution and are in need of temporary shelter. Currently there is one family and a single man. The Islamists' intention, which is to eliminate Christian Somalis from the city, made the property one of their first targets.

"Please pray for my health and the safety of the believers in [this city]."

THE REFORMATION CONTINUES

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther rocked the Catholic Church by calling for a return to the clear and faithful teaching of Scripture. Today, LHF continues what Luther began by translating books like the Small Catechism, Augsburg Confession and Book of Concord into the languages of the world.

This past Sunday, our Lutheran brothers and sisters in the country of Romania dedicated LHF's translation of the Small Catechism in the Romanian language. For East African countries like Kenya and Tanzania, LHF has just published 10,000 copies of Here I Stand, a biography of Martin Luther.

The work Luther began – built on the rock-solid foundation of Jesus Christ – will continue throughout the world for generations to come. This Reformation Day, please consider how you can help LHF lay a foundation of faith in places like Somalia, Russia, Romania and Kenya.

This is for our new organizational structure which was previewed at our voter's meeting in August and will be voted on for approval at our voter's meeting on November 18.)

  1. A new small group or individual Bible study is out called "Family: It's Complicated", that would pertain to many situations and families in our church!  It talks about something ACEs "Adverse Childhood Experiences"  which cause people to have trouble as adults.  It seems like it would be great for a small group Bible study during the week, or for any individual to do at home.  Some have already expressed interest.  Is there any more interest in a small group study or even individual study?

DEVOTION: 1 John 3:1-3 English Standard Version (ESV)

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears[a] we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

DAILY DEVOTION AND CHURCH NEWS: Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018

DEVOTION: Revelation 7:2-17 English Standard Version (ESV)

Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads." And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
12,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
12,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen."

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" 14 I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15 "Therefore they are before the throne of God,
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
    and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
    the sun shall not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
    and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: According to Jesus, why did he often use parables to teach the people?  They were earthly stories with heavenly meanings.  Matt. 13:11-17 gives what Jesus told the disciples when they asked Him why.  Also in Mark 4:10-12 He gives them the same answer.  "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those who are outside everything is a parable, so they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven."

TODAY'S QUIZ: In what area did the man who possessed man who lived among the tombs and was so strong that no one could control him or bind him with chains live?

Psalm 149 English Standard Version (ESV)

Sing to the Lord a New Song

149 Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of the godly!
Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
    let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!
Let them praise his name with dancing,
    making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
    he adorns the humble with salvation.
Let the godly exult in glory;
    let them sing for joy on their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their throats
    and two-edged swords in their hands,
to execute vengeance on the nations
    and punishments on the peoples,
to bind their kings with chains
    and their nobles with fetters of iron,
to execute on them the judgment written!
    This is honor for all his godly ones.
Praise the Lord!
