DEVOTION: (Today I go back to my daily Bible reading since we are done with The Story. I begin with the book of Job.) At this Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell on the ground in worship and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." Job 1:20-22 The story of Job is one of tragedy, loss, and that is just chapters 1 and 2. The rest of the book is the question of suffering and what to do about it? Should we just curse God and die or should we look to our own sinfulness as the cause of suffering? Should we blame God or bless God?
We all know the cause of suffering or at least we should. It is sin. Sin, both the sin in us and the sin in the world, is the cause of all suffering, and it isn't going to go away completely until the day of the Lord Jesus.
The key is what we do with that suffering. Do we just give up? Do we keep on fighting? Do we trust in the Lord in the middle of it like Job did and simply say, "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord!"
It is okay to cry and mourn in your suffering. It is alright to groan and moan when you're in pain. But all the time know that the Lord will never leave you or forsake you and that one day, whether here on earth or there in paradise, he will restore you and lift you up in peace!
Let us pray: Lord God, help me to rejoice in my suffering, so that you and you alone will be praised. Amen.
