"Strength in Numbers"

August 28, 2014
Daily Devotions Peoria train 2And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-18
The man slipped while he was getting on a commuter train in Perth, Australia.

With "Murphy's Law" being what it is, I can tell you his slip occurred at the most inopportune of places: his leg went down, far down, between one of the train's cars and the edge of the platform ... and the train was about to depart.

A quick-thinking fellow passenger notified the railroad staff, which stopped the train from leaving ... but there was another train coming, and prolonged delays can be catastrophic. When normal help procedures didn't succeed in freeing the man, the railroad crew came up with an innovative idea.

They called for all of the passengers to lend a hand.

Video footage of the people's response is dramatic. Dozens of strangers came together as a team and gently, ever so gently, applied pressure to one side of the train car. They all knew that rocking the car would destroy the man's leg and too much oomph would derail the vehicle. Almost imperceptibly the car moved. Just an inch or three was enough to do the job.

The man was freed without scratch or scar and he, along with the good Samaritans, disappeared into the city.

Cool story, don't you think? I like those stories that have a happy ending. I especially like those happy-ending stories which, like this one, are applicable to the Christian life.

You see, most of us know folks who have fallen into sin, are caught and are living out their days without the Savior. Left on their own the situation is hopeless and eternal death and damnation is inevitable.

But, thanks be to God, these folks are not left on their own. The Heavenly Father, seeing their situation, sent His perfect Son, Jesus, into the world to save them. Through His life, suffering, death and resurrection, the Law has been fulfilled, their sins are forgiven, and salvation is a reality for all who are brought to faith.

This is where the Lord has asked us to help.

God has encouraged all of His people to come together and do everything they can to reach out to these lost souls. Through ministries like The Lutheran Hour, through your Synod, through your individual congregation and family, we who were once strangers come together and give the lost the helping hand which saves.

God's Word, the Savior's story, and our proclamation can make all the difference.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, by Your grace and the Savior's sacrifice I have been saved. Now may I, and all Christians, come together and lend a hand in the freeing of other souls. Success to these ventures I pray in the Name of my Savior, Jesus. Amen.

National Life Chain Sunday 2014 – October 5
National Life Chain Sunday 2014on October 5, across the U.S. and Canada—will provide a visible and resolute voice for voiceless children who are threatened by the surgical abortionists’ cruel instruments or by the deadly chemicals in abortive birth controls. The location and time of each Life Chain will be posted at www.LifeChain.net (by state in the U.S. and by province in Canada).

In this our 27th year of public witness on behalf of rejected Preborns, Life Chain will again fill sidewalks in hundreds of cities and towns (over 1500 in 2013). Sign messages will include Abortion Kills Children, Adoption The Loving Option, Jesus Forgives and Heals and other poignant signs available to participants, plus original, creative messages approved by local coordinators.

In brief, Life Chain is an earnest ecumenical prayer ministry rightly viewed as an afternoon extension of Sunday morning worship. Pastoral leadership is key, idle talk is shunned, and the foundational intent of each Chain is to provide God an outreach to anoint and work through. Only He can defeat the powerful spiritual forces that crafted the abortion holocaust now ravaging America and Canada, but God has assigned His church a strategic role.  And how strategic is that role? Renown missionary Arthur Matthews reminded us in Born for Battle that “for every provocation against God’s cause there is provision for victory,” but “without God man cannot” (achieve victory) and “without man God will not” (provide victory). Thus, the rightful heart for prayer against the scourge of legal child killing is surely one of partneringof partnering  our love and protection for local Preborns  “being led away to death” (Proverbs 24:10-12) with God’s eternal sovereignty.

In preparation for October 5, let us trust in the faithfulness of our almighty God and commit humbly to His cause for desperate Little Ones in our church communities.  German church leaders who failed to so commit and who witnessed God’s fierce intervention against holocaustic powers 70 years ago wrote: “We did not fear God above all the powers of men and government; we did not trust and obey God unconditionally—that is what brought us under the sway of the tempter; that is what cast us into the abyss! That is what gave the demon of humanity free rein among us…. Before Him there cries out against us all the innocently shed blood, all the blaspheming of his Holy name, and all the inhumanities which occurred in our midst, especially against the Jews.” That occasion was the Berlin-Brandenburg church leadership Day of Repentance in 1945.

Opportunity awaits us. National Life Chain Sunday 2014 can be a national day of repentance in America and Canada if we choose to make it so. Let us so choose and then see God work mightily among us to save numerous rejected Preborns whose lives rely solely on our partnership with God.
