DEVOTION: Deuteronomy 32:36-39 (ESV)

36 For the Lord will vindicate[a] his people
    and have compassion on his servants,
when he sees that their power is gone
    and there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 Then he will say, 'Where are their gods,
    the rock in which they took refuge,
38 who ate the fat of their sacrifices
    and drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise up and help you;
    let them be your protection!

39 "'See now that I, even I, am he,
    and there is no god beside me;
I kill and I make alive;
    I wound and I heal;
    and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

I love it w hen God gives us a little sarcasm.  In our reading for today he is mocking the other "gods" that the people have followed.  "Let them rise up and help you, let them be your protection."

My friends, your money isn't going to protect you.  Your house isn't going to help you.  Your waist line, no matter how big or small it is, isn't going to get you even one step closer to heaven.  That time you spent working, or partying, or doing whatever other than being in worship isn't going to come back to give you peace when you're in trouble.  That presidential candidate isn't going to make everything better.

Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men who cannot save!  Put your trust in the Lord!  There is none that can take you out of His hand!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understandings.  In all your ways acknowledge HIM and HE will keep your paths straight!

Prayer:  Lord, help us to trust solely in you where true peace and joy can be found.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ        What part of the Promised Land did the tribe of Benjamin get?

(A funny answer from Pat King: the right answer is tucked in to it too!)

I know this one without even looking it up. Many believe it was a renovated gas station in Vermont – Burlington, Vermont, to be exact! But in actuality - A new word I'm throwing out there just for you! You can add it to your "new word for the day" list. – it was in the south central part of Palestine. (Or, the portion between Judah on the south and Ephraim on the north, with the Jordan River as their eastern border. Which doesn't exactly tell us anything, other than they were out in the middle of nowhere, with camel dung as territory markers.)
But, back to my story. Ben and his brother, Judah, took a $5 Penn State ice cream-making correspondence course, and with $12,000 (their brothers all invested $1000 as silent partners), opened their first ice cream shop in the afore-mentioned gas station. They left the old Shell sign up, in order to lure customers - who were in actuality, (there's that word-of-the-day, again!) looking for gas -  in. Anyway, Judah decided to change his name to "Jerry" when all the customers started calling him "Judy." And asking him if he was a girly-girl man. For some strange reason, he took offense at that. But that is how Ben and Judah, became the Ben and Jerry we all love to this very day. No lie!
