DEVOTION: Leviticus 19:9-10 Love Your Neighbor as Yourself 9 "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. 10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.
The Lord has always had provisions for those who are in need,, because there have always been people in need. Because we live in a sinful world, and because all people to one extent or another are selfish, and because there are many who squander what God has given them, and I could go on and on, there will always be the poor and needy among us.
The Lord then doesn't say, give the money to the government so the government takes care of them. He says, YOU take care of them. All over the place do we see the Lord giving us instruction as to how, when, and where to care for those in need. Why? Because he knows that ALL of us are in need in one way or another. He also knows that we are able to find satisfaction in giving. He also knows that as we give we are partaking in God's giving which is the biggest blessing we can receive. As the old saying goes, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."
It is also so that we, as missionaries of Christ, are able to have opportunity to share His love with others that they too might believe and grow. It is a wonderful thing to be able to give freely without giving it a second thought, because then we know that we are giving according to God's will and for His purposes, without any need or desire to be recognized for it, and without any need or desire to be repaid in any way.
More than all of these reasons is the simple reason is that God said so. We do things as Christians because we want to do the will of God! We want to love and give, because God first loved us and gave Himself for us! That's it!
If you don't like what I'm saying today, if you don't like talk about giving, whether it be an offering, or whether it be giving the shirt off your back, or whether it be giving your cash to a stranger, you better check yourself, before you wreck yourself.
That is all God has given you to do: GIVE, LOVE, FORGIVE...... REPEAT! Live in god's grace! Rest in it! And you will give and love and forgive! And all God's people said...... AMEN
Prayer: Lord forgiven our selfishness and our hoarding tendencies and make us to give, love, and forgive over and over again. Amen.
MISSION STATEMENT: As the body of Christ, we strive to make disciples of all, focusing on the next generation through growing
UP in God's Word and Sacraments
OUT into the community by caring for physical and spiritual needs
TOGETHER in fellowship to build lasting relationships in Christ.
