DEVOTION: 1 Timothy 2  (ESV)

"Pray for All People"

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a] Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

At first glance this passage sounds sexist, doesn't it?  Women should stay quiet?  What kind of nonsense is that?  Well, first of all lets look at this in its context.  Paul is talking about what should happen in worship and in the context of the church.  Yes, he does require that men be pastors, which has been a bone of contention for centuries, but it does not mean, in any way, that men are superior to women, or that men should rule over women.  He simply uses the order of creation, that Adam was created first, as the reason or it.  In other words, it is how God created things to be.

The second thing is that Paul is talking about a right attitude in worship.  Men should pray without anger or quarreling, and women should pray without bringing any attention to themselves.   key to this whole passage, according to Paul, is that there should be modesty and self control in worship.

People should not go to worship to bring attention to themselves but to the Lord.  None of that selfishness or self centered thought should come into the church.  We shouldn't care who is the one dong the preaching or the praying.  He is just the mouthpiece and the hands and feet of Christ.  We should only care that God is speaking through the person and that we can hear God's Word, not his.

Again, it is not a question of authority or of power.  it is a question of roles and our place in it all.  If a pastor is not completely humble there is going to be problems.  He needs to be the most humble, as Moses was, and be the biggest example of a servant.  Once a pastor is seen as a servant and the one who is the messenger and deliverer of God's gifts, then we have it right.

Prayer: Lord, when it comes to the church, or anywhere for that matter, help us to serve you with a spirit of humility and servanthood.  Make me a servant today.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: Who are Zophar, Eliphaz and Bildad?  (No answers yesterday so I'll leave this up.)

(From Doug Herzog)
These three men were jealous of Job, because Job was a godly man and well to do. They came to comfort him after adversity. Or did they ? No. They were devilish men, secretly they were delighted in Job's miss fortune.

(From Pat King)

Okay, Zophar, Eliphaz and Bildad were 3 dudes whose parents really, really hated them, so they gave them the very worst names they could think of. Which is why, later in life, they took out their collective spite and targeted it onto Job – who was they, insisted, their "friend."
Personally I have never liked them since – when their friend was in the midst of his misery and needed words of comfort – all they could offer him was more criticism. Have sadly had "friends" like that – got rid of them.
Anyway, here's a cute article about the 3: http://www.shmoop.com/book-of-job/eliphaz-bildad-zophar.html
