Missouri Missions Highlights Amigos De Cristo

Amigos de Cristo began in April 1998 following a huge influx of Hispanic immigrants after a large Tyson's plant opened in Sedalia, Mo. At that time there were no local churches that offered worship in the Spanish language, and a small group of members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sedalia saw a huge mission opportunity. Worship services were held at St. Paul's for the first three years, and in 2000, Christ Lutheran Church (ELCA) offered to sell their small church building to Amigos de Cristo. Eighty-five letters were sent to other LCMS churches, and within five months enough donations were received from individuals, groups, and churches to pay cash for the building, where the congregation has been worshipping ever since.  Read more . . .

Ken and Mary Ann Cox To Be honored at Holy Trinity Lutheran in Grandview

Ken and Mary Ann Cox, long-time members of Holy Trinity Lutheran in Grandview, will be honored for their dedication to the church's Sunday school program at a special celebration April 17.

A luncheon in their honor will be held at noon at the church, 5901 E. 135th St., Grandview. Friends, especially former students, are welcomed to attend. All are also invited to the church service that morning at 10:30 a.m.

Mrs. Cox retired last year from teaching third and fourth grade Sunday school after 60-plus years, although not all at the Grandview church. Mr. Cox has also been involved in the program, especially leading the opening devotions each Sunday for the children.

A freewill offering will be taken at the luncheon to benefit the church's youth program. Thirteen youth and five adults will attend the National Youth Gathering this summer in New Orleans.

Friends are encouraged to send letters of congratulations to the church. For information, please contact the church at 816/763-3211.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 23  English Standard Version (ESV)
"The Lord Is My Shepherd"  A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.[a]
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness[b]
    for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord
    forever.

This coming Sunday is known as "Good Shepherd" Sunday, which is always the fourth Sunday of Easter.  It is usually highlighted by this most famous of all Psalms.  I tis famous and most widely used, because it is such a comforting and heartwarming Psalm.

Every time I read or hear this Psalm my blood pressure goes down, my breath slows, and I et a peace that the world will never understand.  It is the best thing in the world to know that the Lord is our shepherd.  Just think of all that a shepherd does for sheep.  All the sheep has to do is follow the shepherd.  The shepherd will take care of every aspect of the sheep's life.  There is nothing to worry about.  He gives food, shelter, protection from the enemy, peace, security, love, and best of all eternal life!  He gives us everything!

Are you following the Good Shepherd?  Are you living in Him and with Him?  Are you resting in Him?  If not, then stop whatever you are doing right now.  Take a deep breath and read the Psalm above again!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for shepherding us all the way to eternal life.  Amen.
