St. John's Group Email Christian fellowship and exercise

This is for those of you who need/want to get in shape. 
 
 
A bunch of us get together at the high school football field/track on Mon, Tues and Thurs.  to have some prayer and Bible study time and then to work out.  Steven Kohler (my trainer) is the leader of it. 
 
We will be there tonight at 7:30pm.  Come and join us!

DEVOTION:  

And He (Jesus) said to His disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come!" Luke 17:1 Ashley was offered a job opportunity that was too good to be true. That was what the sophisticated lady at the Wal-Mart in Harrisville, Utah, told her. The lady went on to explain she was a recruiter for a restaurant chain, and they were looking for someone like Ashley who would receive bonuses and become "manager material." Ashley said the job "looked good, sounded good," and the lady talking to her was "really, really nice." That's why Ashley eagerly filled out the application. She gladly shared detailed information about herself. She gave her full name; she wrote down past work experiences, and she shared the names, numbers and addresses of other friends. When they asked Ashley for the particulars concerning her bank account, she never hesitated. After all, she had been told the money coming to her as a future supervisor would soon be pouring in. The lady had told the truth. When Ashley checked her account, she was pleased to find some extra deposits had been made. It was only when that money disappeared and took with it the rest of her account that Ashley became truly concerned. She should have been concerned. She had just joined the growing ranks of people in Utah who had been bilked out of their hard-earned cash. It is hardly the first time such a thing has happened. Adam and Eve were bilked out of the Garden when they listened to an offer too good to be true. David found Bathsheba was too good to be true, as did Judas who betrayed his Master for 30 pieces of silver. If you look back at your life, maybe you can find such an incident -- a moment in time when you bought into a temptation that was too good to be true. If so, give thanks for your forgiving Savior. When we sin, He forgives. When we stumble, He picks us up. When we fall victim to an enticing temptation, He ransoms us through His blood upon the cross. Jesus is the one Person who is too good to be true but who is ... true, that is. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, temptations come to us and all too often we fall victim to them. We pray You will grant us a faith that will help us discern when the forces of evil are encouraging us to follow something that is really too good to be true. This I ask in the Savior's Name. Amen.

PLAYERS ARE STILL NEEDED FOR OUR GOLF OUTING TO SUPPORT LITTLE LAMBS PRESCHOOL on August 13!!!!  You don't have to sign up a whole team.  You can just sign up as an individual!!

Details: 4 person scramble format, cash prizes per flight and special hole contest, Burgers and brats for lunch
 
Cost: $50 per person includes round of golf, cart, lunch, and attendance gift.  Hole sponsorship is $50 with proceeds going to Little Lambs.  There will be 50/50 tickets, mulligans and other incentives available for purchase as part of the fundraising portion of the event as well.

School is fast approaching. Help teachers and students at Martin Luther School in Joplin prepare for a great new year. School starts August 17. There are several ways you can help...

Option 1. Complete backpack: Purchase a backpack and fill with all items needed. Please label with the grade level. 

Option 2.  Send supplies: Send individual items from the graded list.

Option 3.  Send gift cards: Purchase $20 Wal-Mart or Target cards to buy backpack kits.

Option 4.  Adopt a teacher: Send gift cards for a teacher.  Joplin stores:  Target, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Office Max, Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Amazon cards are also helpful.

It's Time to start thinking about our MEN'S RETREAT!!

The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011.  This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area.  In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past.  Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend.  The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp.  This is a beautiful setting  for a weekend of adventure and growth.  The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us. 

The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activities  A scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning.   If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping.  Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars.   Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend.  The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.

The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt.  Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge.  You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.
