Flood Relief in Baton Rouge
Daily Email: Monday, August 22, 2016
131 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
We can imagine David writing this with all manner of struggle that was going on in his life.
1. He had the guilt and shame of adultery and murder.
2. He was in charge of a nation that was constantly at war.
Those two things would be enough to crush anyone. Yet, David found his calm in the Lord in the middle of all of this. Like a young toddler (weaned child) who is always calmed when his mom is around, so David is calmed when he remembers that the Lord has not left him or forsaken him.
If you were ever separated from your mom or dad in a crowd when you were a little child you may remember how horrifying that was. Nothing but terror is going through your mind at that time. Then as soon as you could see your mom again, calm like nothing else you could ever experience would come over you.
That's what David experienced when he relied on the Lord for his strength, power, and peace.
There may be a lot of things that are causing you distress these days, making your mind spin out of control, and filling your thoughts with terror and distress. At these times remember that the Lord is right by your side, that He lives in you, and will remain forever! This, and this alone, in an ever increasing out of control world, will give you peace!
Prayer: Lord, when my world is out of control, control me and give me peace. Amen.
