DEVOTION:
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Laura King's three children were given a free ice cream for dessert.

Now I know that may not sound like a newsworthy topic to many of our Daily Devotion readers. Even so, I hope you will listen to what I think is an interesting story.

The tale begins when Laura King took her three children, ages two, three and eight, to the Sogno di Vino Restaurant in Poulsbo, Washington. The family ate their meal, paid their bill, and went home.

It was only when she was at her house that King noticed the bill wasn't exactly what it should have been. No, she hadn't been overcharged. On the contrary, the bill was $4 less than she expected. A handwritten note on the receipt explained why.

It said, "Discount. Well-behaved kids."

Rob Scott, the restaurant's owner, says servers have the discretion to offer a discount to customers. In this case the servers were incredibly impressed with the manners of the three children. Mrs. King is flattered, but she says, "The children only used the same manners they use at their home supper table."

That's the story of some free ice cream.

And now the point: You know, most of the time, most of us think of ourselves as being pretty good Christians. Recognizing we have been rescued from hell through the Savior's sacrifice, we try to glorify Him by making sure we walk the straight and narrow. Some of us like the straight and narrow so much we keep watch to make sure everyone else is walking as straight and narrow as we.

When the folks we are observing wander off that straight and narrow, we may pray for them, we may speak to them and, sad to say, sometimes we gossip about them. But this devotion is not about what we do when people go astray.

This devotion is about what we do when people are doing good, when they are walking right down the middle of God's straight and narrow path. What do we do then? Well, my friends, I can't speak for you, but I have to confess 95 times out of a 100, I don't do anything.

And that's sad.

It's sad that many of us often ignore Paul's words about encouraging and building each other up. It's tragic we spend far more time criticizing rather than complimenting. It's distressing that the staff at Sogno di Vino are more encouraging than I have been.

Thankfully, this is a shortcoming that can be easily remedied. All we need do is see the good others are doing and thank them for it -- and maybe buy them a $4 ice cream.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I pray my life may glorify the Savior, who gave Himself for my salvation. May I not only do what is right, may I also encourage others, as they struggle against the burdens and temptations a sinful world places before them. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION: (from LHM Pastor Ken Klaus)

For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them. Romans 12:4-6

I didn't think I would ever say it but, as of tomorrow, Pope Benedict XVI and myself will have something in common. And if you're asking, "What is this common ground?" I can share that both of us will be retired.

When my wife heard about the pontiff's decision, she turned to me and said, "I didn't know a pope could retire." She can be forgiven for not knowing. The last pope who stepped down was Gregory XII, who served as pontiff 70 years before Martin Luther was born.

There have been others who have, as Canon Law decrees, resigned "from an ecclesiastical office for a just cause." Some resigned for a noble purpose. In that category could be put Gregory the XII, who resigned because he wished to put an end to division within the church. Others have stepped down under a cloud. Such a man was Marcellinus (296-304), who was deposed because he had, as the Roman Emperor Diocletian had ordered, made a sacrifice to idols.

So there you have it. Pastors, priests and popes are allowed to step away from the position in which they have been serving. Indeed, anyone can step down, if they feel God wants them somewhere else. I hope you noticed I didn't say they can step down because they don't want to do anything anymore.

The truth is God has a job for each of us to do. That job may change depending on situation and circumstance, but God, most certainly, has a job for you to do.

That's a pretty strong statement, and it's pretty all-inclusive. Even so, it is true.

I remember one lady in my congregation who was dying, for her death did not come swiftly or easily. The particular cancer she had was slow and caused a great amount of physical pain. Still, from a sick bed she recognized God had given her a job to do.

First, she wrote to her grandchildren. To those who were in the faith, she offered words of encouragement, and to those who had wandered away from Jesus, she encouraged their return. Second, she tried, as much as she was able, to offer a Christian witness to the doctors and nurses, who were caring for her. She felt her job was to be as good a patient as she could possibly be.

Eventually, the day came when the Savior took her home. Her work was finished. Can I tell you the results of that work? Three of her grandchildren told me how grandma's letter had brought them back to Jesus. And the hospital people ... if it had been possible, the hospital would have closed down for this Christian lady's funeral. As it was, only a skeleton crew remained on duty, while the rest of the staff came to the funeral to give thanks to God for a Christian woman, whose job had been to point them to Jesus. Their attendance said she had done that job well.

So, I don't know what job the Lord has in store for Benedict the XVI, and I don't know what work He has entrusted to you. But for me, I give thanks the work He has entrusted to me allows me to talk about Jesus with you.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, place me and use me in that place where I may serve You best. May my life be a witness to the wonders of the love and salvation I have received from Your Son. In His Name I pray it. Amen.

MONDAY'S QUIZ: What was a mother, who had just given birth, supposed to give as a burnt offering and as a sin offering?
"And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, and he shall offer it before the LORD and make atonement for her. Then she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child, either male or female. And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean."

WIl Pritzel's funeral is still on!!

We have the parking lot, steps, and ramps all cleared off so come and praise God for the wonderful earthly life and eternal life of Will with his family and friends.

The roads are just wet but fine.

(revised) Monday, February 25, 2013

Jim Rahn pointed out to me that the prayer at the end of the devotion wasn't done.   I got cut off by the internet and then got distracted and forgot about it.

Here's the prayer:  Lord God, help me to live a free life in Your peace and joy knowing that I am now free to do Your will because I want to and not because I have to.  All I do for you I do out of thankfulness and praise for what you have already done for me.  Oh, how  love Jesus, because He first loved me.  Amen.

DEVOTION:
These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl.  If she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering.  In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean."  Leviticus 12:8

Aren't you glad that when Jesus came, suffered and died for our sins.  Can you imagine fulfilling all of the rules and regulations that the Israelites did?  Can you imagine all of the trouble you would have to go through every time you had a baby to do what the law required.  There were no exceptions.  Everyone had to do it.  If you were to remain in God's grace you had to fulfill the law.

Eventually the Israelites kind of gave up on that.  They forgot all about the reason for their offerings which were to thank God and to atone for sin.  They just did it without even thinking about it if they did it at all.

The good news is that Jesus fulfilled that law for us.  We are free to live without the restrictions and the forced offering.  Instead we are able to freely give our offerings out of love, honor and gratitude for God.  We no longer have to give sin offerings to atone for our own sin.  Jesus did that for us.  What a great and wonderful gift!

In response to His gift of freedom to us we ought to live in that freedom!  He died for our sins.  Why would we want to live in them any longer?  Therefore, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles us and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us!

Let us pray:  Lord God, help me to live a free

Lil Winter at 636-585-2525 or Libby Pailer at 636-456-7164 or respond to this e-mail.  Food should be to the church by 11:00-12:00 on Tuesday, 2/26.  We need volunteers to help in the serving and clean up also.  We thank all who have helped us in the past as well as now.  We couldn't do this last kindness if it wasn't for the generous people here at St. John's.

Thank you and God bless, Linda Callies

DEVOTION:  (From Lutheran Hour Ministries)

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. John 13:17

Having spent 20 years working with North American congregations, Thomas S. Ranier has come to some conclusions -- conclusions about what "happy" churches have in common.

Happy? Where did "happy" come from?

Thinking back, I was pretty positive none of my church constitutions had happy as a priority, and none of my call documents asked me to be a happy pastor, who would try to establish a happy congregation. Even more, after a quick search in my Bible's concordance, I was assured nowhere had the Lord commanded, "Thy church shalt be a happy place."

Even so, I imagine most people would rather attend a church filled with happy worshippers than one which features pews packed with sour-pussed parishioners.

Now, if you're interested, I can share just a few of the nine features which Mr. Ranier says are shared by most happy congregations. For example, he says a happy church is one which has a pastor who is authoritative but not dictatorial. Another rule says, "The pastor shows love for the congregation ... no matter how they feel about him." Happy congregations, according to Mr. Ranier, have a staff that likes each other and works well together. They also have a high percentage of the congregation actively involved in ministry.

One of Mr. Ranier's rules I liked was, "Happy churches have business meetings, which are brief and friendly." Another rule worthy of note was, "In most happy congregations many of the people were involved in small group Bible studies or Sunday school." Mr. Ranier came to other conclusions, but space doesn't allow me to share the rest.

As a Lutheran pastor, I was surprised to see none of the items on Mr. Ranier's list spoke of Word and Sacrament. None touched upon proper preaching of Law and Gospel, and nowhere did he reference the Savior who said, "If ye know these things, ye are happy if ye do them."

Do you remember when Jesus said that? It was after He had washed the disciples' feet, after He had said, "If I do this for you, you ought to do the same for others." It was after Jesus said we should make sacrifices for the greater good of God's people.

That was, after all, what Jesus did. His leaving heaven and being born in Bethlehem was a sacrifice. His rejection by fickle hearts and souls was a sacrifice. His years of ministry where He was misunderstood, maligned and hated was a sacrifice. His betrayal, His unfair trial, His carrying our sins, His unjust crucifixion were all sacrifices made, so we might be saved.

Sacrifice -- that is what Jesus did for us, and it is what He encourages us to do for others, if we are to be happy.

Honestly, I like Jesus' list better than I do that of Mr. Ranier.

Maybe I should say, the Savior's sacrifice for my salvation has made me forgiven, saved, peaceful and, yes, it has made me happy.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, sin and Satan try to ruin the fellowship of the faithful. Today I pray You will do what is necessary to defeat them so peace, contentment, joy and happiness may be found in the hearts of Your people. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.

TUESDAY'S QUIZ: What inheritance did the Levites get in the and that was given to the Israelites by God (the Promised Land)?

"The priests, who are Levites, indeed the whole tribe of Levi, are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel.  They shall live on offerings made to the Lord by fire, for that is their inheritance.  They shall have no inheritance among their brothers, the Lord is their inheritance, as he promised them."  Deuteronomy 18:1-5

"The Lord  appointed the men of the Levi tribe to be in charge of the Covenant Box & to serve him as priests.  That is why the tribe of Levi received no land as the other tribes did.  What they did receive was the privilege of being the Lord's priests as God had promised."  Deuteronomy 10:8-9  (Thanks Dianne!)

Prayers of thanksgiving requested

Prayers of thanksgiving to our Lord for the birth of a healthy baby to Jon  and Kim Stetzel. Their new daughter is Janie Rose and was born EARLY this morning at 12:21 AM. Thanks to all who kept Kim and Janie Rose in their prayers these past weeks. The family really appreciates them. Just FYI, Kim is a 3rd grade teacher (and former student!) at Kennerly School in the Lindbergh School District.

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 (revised)

I forgot to add this important prayer request.  Please pray for Austin Heitgerd who is having surgery to repair his knee after a motorbike accident yesterday.

DEVOTION:  Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.  Exodus 15:19a

When you are writing out your bills and thinking about what you have to spend money on, Is your offering an afterthought or is it the first thing you think about?  If you are like me a lot of times the offering is one of, if not the, last thing you think about.  What do you think God thinks about that?  Is it sinful to always think last of God's offering?
The reading for today is just one of the many laws of Israel regarding offerings.  Here is another one, "The priests, who are Levites-- indeed the whole tribe of Levi- are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel.  They shall live on the offerings made to the Lord by fire, for that is their inheritance among their brothers; the Lord is their inheritance, as he promised them."  Here is another one, "The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock..... No one is to appear before me empty handed."
Seems like God takes offering pretty seriously.  In the New Testament we are free from the law, and so we are "slaves" to Christ.  That means that we don't have to give offerings, we don't have to do anything.  We GET to do things that please and honor God.   Here's a verse from the New Testament.  "Everyone should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
When you realize what the Lord is doing with your offering, that He is doing His will, then you can give cheerfully.  The Lord is doing great things w2ith your offerings here.  People are being helped that need help.  The building, St. John's Lutheran Church, and it's pastor are being cared for so that the Gospel can be proclaimed and people can be confronted with the law and comforted with the Gospel, people are being brought to faith, baptized confirmed and growing in their faith.  All this and so much more is what your offering helps to do.
I want to encourage you to look into your heart and truly DECIDE what to give, knowing that your offering will produce fruit!  I want to encourage you to give the firstfruits of what you have as an offering to the Lord knowing that God will bless it and you through it.  Mostly though, I want you to give joyfully so that God can bless it and you beyond your wildest imaginations!

Let us pray:  Lord God, help us to give cheerfully!  Help us to give according to what you want and not according to our needs or wants.  Help us to give so that our offerings can honor you, but mostly just help us to give because that is what You want us to do.  Amen.

THURSDAY' S QUIZ: What was the misunderstanding that Moses had with the leaders of the tribes of Reuben and Gad when they requested the land of Jazer and Gilead instead of the land in the Promised Land?

He thought that they were going to stay there so they wouldn't have to fight with the rest of the tribes of Israel to take over the Promised Land, but really they just thought the land was good and they wanted safe place for their women and children to live in fortified cities.
