DEVOTION:  Acts 2:14English Standard Version (ESV)

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them:

22 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus,[a]delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,

"'I saw the Lord always before me,
    for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
    my flesh also will dwell in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
    or let your Holy One see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will make me full of gladness with your presence.'

29 "Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

"'The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at my right hand,
35     until I make your enemies your footstool."'

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."

It doesn't take flowery language.  It doesn't take engaging stories.  It doesn't take a quick wit or a very big sense of humor.  It just takes the truth of God's Word to bring people to Christ and to bring people from death to life.

Peter doesn't spend any time getting to the point.  He gets right to it.  In fact, it takes about five minutes to read through his whole first sermon, part of which is your reading for today.  Yet, afterwards 3,000 souls were brought from death to life.

It's sometimes frustrating as a pastor when you preach and preach the good news of Christ and your church is not growing like the other ones.  You wish you could have the same success as Peter did that day.  Then you have to remember that it wasn't Peter's success.  It was the Holy Spirit's.

In the same way, we always have to remember that when we speak and preach God's Word it will not return to Him void.  It will do what He has sent it out to do.

The best we can do is confess and proclaim, confess and proclaim!  We can confess what the Lord has revealed to us about himself, and we can proclaim the good news of Christ risen, ascended, and coming again!   DO IT TODAY!!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us your Word.  Help us to simply confess it and proclaim it and then let you take care of the results.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ : Who came after Ahab as king?

From Pat King:  During the battle to recover Ramoth-Gilead from the Arameans, Ahab disguised himself – idgit thought he could hide from God! - but was mortally wounded by an unaimed arrow (1 Kings 22). The Hebrew Bible says that dogs licked his blood, according to the prophecy of Elijah. (1Kings 21:19). But the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) adds that pigs also licked his blood, symbolically making him unclean to the Israelites, who abstained from pork. Ahab was succeeded by his sons, Ahaziah (lasted about a year, since he was a slumdog like his parents), then by his brother Jehram – who lasted about 12 years.

From Don Nolte:  His son Ahaziah.

NEWS!!!!

STEPHEN MINISTRY: Throughout the month of June we will be highlighting our Stephen Ministry program.

Stephen Ministry is a caring ministry that is carried out by lay people.  It has been a part of St. John's in various forms and levels since 2003.  Many people have gone through the training and cared for others with their training.  These people are called "care givers".  Many more have benefitted from the help these people have provided.  These people are called "care receivers".  This is a tremendously beneficial ministry to both care giver and care receivers as both grow in faith and as many of them become friends if they weren't already.

It is also a great benefit to our congregation for many different reasons!  Care givers learn how to be better Christian moms, dads, husbands, wives, friends, and church members.  The congregation grows as our community finds out how caring and loving we are as a congregation through this ministry.  It is a wonderful thing!

We are in need of some new Stephen ministers.  It is a commitment, but the commitment is definitely worth it!  You will be blessed beyond measure if you go through the training and become a Stephen Minister.  PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NEED MEN TO BE STEPEHEN MINISTERS JUST AS MUCH AS WOMEN!!

Last Sunday at our 8:30 worship, Chrissy Groeber and Marcia Sevier were installed as our new Stephen Leaders!!  They will be starting a new Stephen Ministry training as soon as everyone who is interested signs up and a start date and time can be established.

Please prayerfully consider this and then come to church this coming weekend and sign up or reply to this email and I will sign you up!
