DEVOTION: Mark 9:14-29 English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, "What are you arguing about with them?" 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." 19 And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." 23 And Jesus said to him, "'If you can'! All things are possible for one who believes." 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out[a]and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again." 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, "He is dead." 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" 29 And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer."[b]

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ
After his friends gave him speeches and platitudes to try to help him in his troubles, how did Job respond?
Here's what Don Nolte answered: Job put into practice what he had earlier confessed. He repents "in dust and ashes" and receives the Lord's redemption. In this way, Satan's question has been answered -- Job does not fear the Lord for the sake of wealth or prosperity. He fears the Lord because He calls people to repentance and redeems them. Job (chap. 38-42)
Here's another answer: He basically told his friends that nothing that they had said to him actually helped. They were just judging and condemning him even though he had done nothing wrong. They even tried to convince him to just give up. What he really needed was grace, and he eventually got it from God, who is the only real source of grace in the first place.

DISCIPLE MAKERS WENT GREAT LAST NIGHT!!
There are two sessions every week on Sunday at 10:45 and Wednesday at 6:30!! Please join us! Every age is invited to participate!!! You might even get a book!
I am looing forward to it continuing to grow week by week. I urge you all to make a concerted effort to get into God's Word. A vibrant and expanding church is one whose MEMBERS are in God's Word as much as possible! If you aren't in Bible study or devotions, get started!! GOD'S WORD IS LIVING AND ACTIVE!!
I am really excited about this new form of worship and Bible study/Sunday school! God will surely bless it and make it grow!
Yesterday we talked about the Bible. What is the Bible? What is it for? Who wrote it? How should we read it and study it? It was a great beginning! The kids also each got an age appropriate book to take home.
This Sunday we are going to get into it! We'll start with the creation account up to Adam and Eve.
Every week we will have some worship time and then we will answer three questions about the story we are studying:
What is the history of it all? (What actually happened?)
What is His story? (What does God want us to understand and know?)
What is your story? (What is it all about for you?)
