DEVOTION:  2 Samuel 7:1-11 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord's Covenant with David

Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent." And Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you."

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, "Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"' Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b] over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.

16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[a] Your throne shall be established forever.'"

Sometimes we have in mid to do great things for God.  We'll grow a church.  We'll build a new addition.  We'll go and be missionaries.  I'll do this for the Lord.  I'll do that for the Lord.  Why is this wrong thinking?  It seems legitimate.  It seems to go with what God would want us to do.  So why does King David seem to get scolded by God when he decides to build a house for the Lord?  Easy…  because it was his idea and not God's.

God never commanded David, or anyone else for that matter, to build him a house.  He was just fine moving around in a tent.  In fact, he preferred it.  When a house of God is built, it has to be built by God and according to God's command.  If it is just someone's idea, it may look successful on the outside, but God will not approve.  It has to be for God's purposes and according to God's standard.

The same is true for anything we set our minds to do.  If you read through almost every part of the Old Testament you will see that when people moved without the authority or direction of God, they always failed.  IF they set out on a journey, they would get lost.  If they went into battle they would be defeated badly.  Even when Moses struck the rock instead of speaking it, it did not go well with him. He wasn't allowed to enter the Promised Land.

Any work, any life, any position, anything you do will not be satisfying or successful in God's eyes if he is not in it.  It may look successful to humans, but it will always make a person feel empty and unsatisfied.  A person who sets his mind on making as much money as he can will never have enough.  A person who makes it to the top without God's approval will find only emptiness there.  A person who only goes into relationships for selfish reason will never find fulfillment or true love in those relationships.  I could go on and on.

It is best, as children of God, to simply say what James says, "If it is God's will we will do this or that and go here or there."  "If it is God's will."  Those are the best words we can say as we begin each and every day.  May whatever you do, whether in word or deed, be God's will today.

Prayer: Lord God, make me surrender to you and do your will today.  Amen.
