DEVOTION: Psalm 30   English Standard Version (ESV)
"Joy Comes with the Morning"  A Psalm of David. A song at the dedication of the temple.

30 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up
and have not let my foes rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
    and you have healed me.
O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;
you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.[a]

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,
and give thanks to his holy name.[b]
For his anger is but for a moment,
and his favor is for a lifetime.[c]
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.

As for me, I said in my prosperity,
    "I shall never be moved."
By your favor, O Lord,
    you made my mountain stand strong;
you hid your face;
    I was dismayed.

To you, O Lord, I cry,
and to the Lord I plead for mercy:
"What profit is there in my death,[d]
if I go down to the pit?[e]
Will the dust praise you?
Will it tell of your faithfulness?
10 Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
    O Lord, be my helper!"

11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

I've spent a lot of time the past couple weeks trying to think of how best to  communicate the idea of stewardship within a church setting.  I think verses 11-12 in this passage says it best.

He has turned our mourning into dancing and have loosed our sackcloth and clothed us with gladness SO THAT our glory may sing His praise and NOT BE SILENT, and so that we can give thanks to God forever!

Our purpose on this earth is to sing praise and to give thanks to God forever!  We don't just do that for an hour on Sunday morning or Saturday night.  Nor do we just do it with a little piece of our being.   We can't section God off or praise Him piecemeal.  He isn't just the God of our time and not our talents or money.  He's the God of ALL OF IT!!

And so, when He turns our mourning and sadness over sins into  joy and gladness over His salvation, we will praise Him with our whole being, body and soul, finances and time, day in and day out, with EVERYTHING we are and EVERYTHING we have.

I urge you to think about what part of your life is not praising God today!  Do you have a chokehold on your wallet so tight that a crowbar can't get it open, because you trust your money more than you trust God to use your money for His glory?  Is your time so precious to you that you count every second and think that only a part of it is worth giving up to the Lord in honor and praise and not all of it?  Are you using your talents, whatever they might be for your own gain and not for the gain of the kingdom?

If this is the case at all, turn to the Lord, REPENT OF YOUR SIN, and turn to the God who will most certainly turn your mourning into dancing and give you new party clothes of joy to wear!

Let us pray: Lord continually turn my heart to you so that I may dance and sing in Your presence today and forever.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZWho is Solomon writing to in the Song of Solomon?

(A very good answer from Pat King)

Okay, I know. You're first inclination is, to a bunch of musicians. Since they like music – or so they say. But no. Although, some people believe this was originally sung. (And you heard that here first!)
So, the serious answer:
It is believed to have been written by Sol before he got his harem; when he was in love with one lady – a Shulamite. The bridegroom was, of course Sol. The other people in the songs are the daughters of Jerusalem, and the brothers of the Shulamite maid.
And even though early church dudes argued about including it in the Bible – since God is not specifically mentioned - God obviously wanted it included. It shows the marital relationship God intended between one man and one woman, when He first instituted marriage back in the Garden of Eden.. It also reflects the relationship of Christ with His church.
See! I can be semi-serious! Who knew!

DEVOTION:  Luke 7:1-10English Standard Version (ESV)

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a servant[a] who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion[b] heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue." And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

You would expect to see this kind of faith among the people that God had appointed as his own and kept as his own for thousands of years.  You wouldn't expect this kind of faith within a Gentile centurion who was supposed to be against Jesus and his people.

You never know where you're going to find faith.  You may find it in a Jewish millionaire who learns of Christ's love and comes to faith.  You may find it in the drug addict who has no home.  You may find it in a man who has been a Christian for 45 years, since he was two weeks old.  You may also find an even greater faith in the lady who just heard the Gospel an hour ago.

It's not your job to judge who will and won't believe.  It's not your job to pick and choose who should hear the good news from you.  It's not for you to give forgive to only those you think are worthy of it.  You are not that kind of judge.

The next time you are judging someone look at them as Jesus does, as someone for whom He died.  Judge them as Jesus did the centurion in today's lesson, as someone who has greater faith than everyone in the church!

Let us pray: Help me not to judge people according to what I see, but according to what you see.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ

Who was Agur son of Jakeh?

Pat is Back by un- popular demand!  hehe

Contrary to popular belief, he was not the son named after the sound a cat makes, when coughing up a hairball. I know, it sure sounds like it, but not true. No, Agur be Jakeh (Hebrew: אגור בן יקה‎) was the dude who compiled a bunch of proverbs – written by crazy Sol – and he plunked them all down in Proverbs 30 – which is sometimes known as the Book of Agur, or Sayings of Agur. So says the wise and infallible Wiki!
But I actually like the hairball answer better.

So, here's an article you guys can read, if you're so inclined: http://www.gotquestions.org/Agur-Proverbs.html

Oh! I forgot something! The book of Agur is not  - I repeat NOT!!! – the common plumbing manual used by student plumbers when trying to figure out how to use an – you guessed it! – augur! Note the different spelling when shopping for said manual.

DEVOTION:  Galatians 1:1-12English Standard Version (ESV)

"Greeting"

Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— and all the brothers[a] who are with me,

To the churches of Galatia:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

"No Other Gospel"
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant[b] of Christ.

"Paul Called by God"
11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel.[c] 12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

There were some people in Galatia at Paul's time who were Christians, but they were mistaken Christians.  These Christians had the mistaken belief that the people still had to fulfill the Jewish regulations and laws.  They were mistaken because Jesus had fulfilled those laws all by himself and made them obsolete.  They were no longer necessary for salvation, or for that matter anything else.  In essence, these people were saying that belief in the salvation of Jesus through his life, suffering, death, and resurrection was not enough.

Do you know anyone, or even a whole church body that teaches this?  I bet you do.  There are many confused and mistaken Christian churches who put other stipulations on the Gospel.  They teach that a person must be good, or that he has to fulfill the law of ...... whatever.

I tell you the truth!  There is no other Gospel!  Later on in this letter Paul exclaims, once again, that "we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Jesus Christ, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

This is the Gospel!  Listen up!  Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right handoff God the Father Almighty!  From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.  He did this all for you!  He suffered died and rose again for you!  You will live forever if you believe this!

That's it!  No more! No less!  Believe it and you will be saved!

Have a blessed day y'all!

Prayer: Lord, don't let me listen to anyone who will distort, change, add to, or take away from the Gospel.  Give me the wisdom to know the Gospel and to believe it and only it wholeheartedly so I can be with you forever.  Amen.

PASTOR KLAUSTERMEIER IS BIKING 1,000 MILES THIS SUMMER FOR LEADACHILD!!!

We have been blessed beyond measure in the United States haven't we?  I want you to join me in making a global difference by releasing children from poverty through Christian education.

Instead of taking a week off and joining my fellow Lead a Child bikers who are riding the Fault Line across four states this year,  I have decided to go solo and bike 1,000 miles locally and while on vacation by August 1 to raise funds for LeadaChild. Would you sponsor me so that I can raise funds to support this most worthy organization?  In my opinion, there is no more worthy organization to support than LeadaChild!

LeadaChild  provides educational assistance to over 26,000 children and shares the love of Jesus Christ with the students and their families! LeadaChild supports the poorest of the poor children through Christian education in the following countries:

Guatemala                    Chad                       Honduras               Palestine               Haiti             Uganda

Gambia                          Ivory Coast            El Salvador            Nigeria                   Panama       Nicaragua

Burma                            Ghana                     Chile                       Venezuela             Bolivia         Mexico

Liberia                            Uruguay                Sri Lanka                India                       Guinea        Sierra Leone

Bangladesh                   Cambodia              South Africa         Togo                       Thailand
