DEVOTION:
Then I looked up-- and there before me was a man with a measuring line in hi shand!  I asked, "Where are you going??"  He answered me, "TO measure Jerusalen, to find out how wide and how long it is."   Zechariah 2:1-2

How do you measure yourself?  Do you measure yourself by others?  DO you think of yourself according to what the people who surround you think of you?  Does your mood change based on the praise or lack of it you get?  Does your self worth come from what people think of you?  Does it come from how much money is in your bank account?  Is it by the amount of facebook friends you have or how many texts you get during the day?

What happens when you fail or when you disappoint someone?  Is your worth lessened or ruined all together?  The trouble is that when we measure ourselves by a false standard we are going to be disappointed and the standard is going to constantly change.  It is impossible to please man.  As the old saying goes "You can please some of the people some of the time and you can please all of the people every once in a great while, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.  There is always gong to be someone who opposes you no matter how nice, wonderful, and accomodating you are.  That is the way the devil works.  He isn't going to make it easy for you.  In fact, the more you grow as a Christian the more roadblocks he will put in your way.

You need to measure yourself according to God's measuring line.... perfection. And then when you realize that you aren't perfect in any way, you can go to God to ask for His mercy and grace, that He would take away the measurement all together.  What God has done, instead of measuring you according to His standards, is sent His perfect and sinless Son, Jesus to fulfill the measurement.  He has taken your place!  He has completed God the Father's expectations!

Quit measuring yourself according to what others think you should be and instead measure yourself according to what God thinks you should be, His child, a forgiven and redeemed sinner!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to realize that I don't live for others but that I live for you, and that living for you provides freedom for me to be who You have made me to be.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  At the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, they lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.  Ezra 4:6

Haters always gonna hate.  For those of you who don't speak teenage language, what this translates to is "There is always going to be opposition in your life."  Whether it comes from within or without, haters are always going to hate!  Sometimes it comes from the devil himself.  Sometimes it comes from a person through whom the devil works.  There may be someone who just likes to stir up controversy in everyones life.  It may just be someone who is jealous.  It may just be an annoyance, like a fly that you just can't seem to swat, or it may be something that has taken over your whole existence.  Whatever the case, haters gonna hate, the key is how you deal with it.

The Israelites had that same problem.  First it was Egypt, then it was Assyria, then it was Babylon, then Persia.  Their troubles were mostly their own fault for turning away from God, so they had to suffer the consequences.  But those consequences caused them to turn back to God and to fully rely on Him for their very lives.  When Rehum and Shimshai filed a complaint against the Israelites because they were rebuilding Jerusalem, the Israelites had to stop building and be patient.  God taught them patience so that when Darius came to power, they were able to resume rebuilding.

How do you deal with the haters?  Do you quit?  Do you get frustrated and angry?  Or are you patient and full of grace and love?  DO you look at it as an obstacle and a problem or as a challenge and a way that God will help you grow?

Jerusalem eventually got rebuilt and the people of Jerusalem were able to live in peace for quite a few generations afterward.  What is God going to build through and with you?

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to deal with the haters with love, mercy, grace, peace, and patience so that Your name might be praised and Your kingdom built up!  Amen.

DEVOTION: So I was left alone gazing at this great vision;  I ha dno strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless.  Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep lseep, face to the ground.   A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees.  He said, "Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you."  And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling."  Daniel 10:7-9

Daniel was in the very presence of God.  You can tell by how he was totally helpless, on his hands and knees, and trembling.  At the same time, we are in the very presence of God, but no one sees us on our hands and knees, trembling before the Lord.

We don't realize often enough how much God sees us and everything we do.  If we did realize it we would definitely tremble at His presence a whole lot more.  We would fall to the ground paralyzed with fear.  We would most certainly bow our heads in shame when we realize how much we have truly offended God.

Maybe it is time that we all realize God's presence and omniscience a bit more so that we don't get too full of ourselves and too self righteous.  What do you think?  Is that a good idea for your life today?  For me it always is.

Prayer:  Lord God humble us according to Your will that you might lift us up!  Amen.

Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012

DEVOTION:  I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days.  Then I got up and went about doing the king's business.  I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.  Daniel 8:27

How much of this world and how God deals with it do you really understand?  Has God ever had you go through something, but you just couldn't figure out why?  Why do some things happen that simply have no explanation?  Why do some suffer while others do not?  Why does it all seem like random nonsense at times?  And why do I get so digusted by it all?

Daniel was given a vision of God that was way out there.  It was crazy.  Even Daniel didn't know what to make of all of it.   It just seemed like crazy nonsense to him and it literally made him sick for several days.

I am sure that there are things in your life that go beyond explanation.  There are things that you have gone through that you may still be wondering what God's purpose was.  You may never know.  You may never find out the reason for everything that happens.  Guess what, that's ok.  Sometimes you just have to let God be God.  SOmetimes there are things that just go above and beyond your understanding.  But you can also know that nothing goes beyond God's understanding.  He knows what's going to happen next.  he knows the full course of events from beginning to end.  He knows how many hairs are on your head.  He knows what you had for breakfast and what you will have for every breakfast from now until the end of your life.

Not only does He know all these things but He loves you more than anyone else ever could.  Isn't it a great blessing to know that the same God who knows everythign also loves you enough to send His Son Jesus to die for you?

When we are kids we just simply leave a lot up to our parents.  We did't really think about where our next meal is coming from.  We did't worry about the electric bill.  We did't think about the appointments we had or much of anything like that.   We just left it up to our parents.  In the same way, in order to have peace in our lives and to give God the glory, we need to be able to leave things up to God.  After all, He does love us the most!  Why wouldn't we leave it all up to HIm?

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to be me and leave the rest up to You!  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 102:4-5  My heart is blighted out and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food.  Because of my loud groaning, I am reduced to skin and bones.

I really like food.  Even now as I just mention it, my mouth is beginning to water a little bit.  You should see me when I have the food network on T.V.  But have you ever been in so much pain or so sad that you couldn't eat?  Even I, who loves food more than most, have had those times when I was so sck, so upset, or so in pain that I couldn't even eat.

David, who wrote this Psalm had many of those times, because he was being chased byKing Saul, that he and his army might kill.  The whole time though, it was God who was keeping him safe.  He finally realizes it a few verses later when he says, "But you, O Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations.  You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come."

Sometimes our fear or our pain consumes us so much that we forget even the simplest things like sustaining food.  We forget to eat.  If we have ever experienced the sudden death of a loved one you know how it feels.  Your whole body goes numb, your brain has a hard time processing the information to the point that you may even begin to deny that it actually happened, or that someone is playing a very cruel joke on you.

It is at these times that the Lord God snaps us back to reality.  he reminds us that he is God and His will is done.  he reminds us that He has had us in His arms the whole time.  He reminds us that everything is going to be alright with Him.  Even if it isn't always alright on earth, it will be alright in paradise forever!  Forever compared to a few days or months of suffering on earth.....  THERE IS NO COMPARISON!  Forever wins out every time.

SO if you are going through something very painful right now, so much so that you have forgotten to eat, just remember that this too shall pass! There is an end to your suffering and the end is JESUS!

Prayer:  Lord God help me to always remember that all things end in You!  You are the Alpha and the Omega, the begining and the end!  Giv eme grace to accept my afflictions, and strength to deal with them in a way that is pleasing to You.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.  With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.  It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.  Psalm 44:1-4

Have you experienced success lately?  If you have, how much of it was your hard work and how much of it was because God blessed you with the right circumstances and abilities at jus
the right time?

I like to watch a lot of sports, and lately I have noticed more and more, especially as I watch pro football's replacement refs, how much of the success of a team depends simply on the things that just seem to happen at just the right time in just the right way.

It is that way with so much of our lives.  Our success, as much as we work hard and do the right things, depends on how much God blesses us.  And often, at times, in order that we might realize His help and His blessing, he allows us ot fail despite our best efforts.

The Israelites only succeeded because God gave them their success.  He led them, and it was by His hand and His mighty arm that He gave them their land and their blessings.  After a while they forgot all about Him and what he had done, not only that bu tthey started to worship and serve other gods because they thought that those gods were the ones that had blessed them.  So God allowed them to fall into captivity, to suffer defeat at the hand of their enemies and to just go through times of pain and suffering.

What part of life are you going through right now?  If you are going through success, THANK GOD!  He is the one that has blessed you with it.  If you are going through times of trial and suffering think about what God wants youto learn and how He wants you to grow through it.  And THANK GOD that he hasn't completely left you or forsaken you, but that he continues to love you in spite of your forgetfulness.

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to bless you both in times of trial and success so that I continue to remember that from You all blessings flow.  Amen

DEVOTION:
And the Lord said to me, "Go again, love a woman who i sloed by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.  Hosea 3:1

Today I am doing a Bible study on KFUO AM 850 kfuoam.org) at 10am on Hosea 3-4.  Hosea is quite a different book.  Hosea is commanded by God to go and take a wife that is a prostitute so that God can show how He loves His people even though they prostitute themselves to other Gods.  He is to take her back over an over again even though she contiinues ot sin in such a vile and disgusting way.

The key is to apply it to our own lives.  How do we "prostitute" ourselves to other gods such as money, TV, work, the internet, etc?  How do we give ourselves to someone or something other than the one who redeemed us from the slavery of sin?

Think about that in your own life today.  What takes precedence over God?  Do your kids Sunday sports do that?  Does your job take precedence?  How about your money?  If God asked you to give one of these things up for him would you be willing to do it?

Yet, evne though we continue to "prostitute" ourselves to other things besides God, he still loves, us, he still redeems us, he still saves us.  Let us therefore turn from those things that are keeping us from God so that we might know His presence and His love more fully every day!

Prayer:  Lord God I have sinned agains tYou in many ways.  I have put other things like money, power, vanity, and much more in front of honoring and praising you.  Please forgive me and give me your peace that I may know the consolation of your love.  Giv eme a hear tthat is fully devoted to doing your will in all things.  Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question: What comfort do we get from Christ's ascension to the right hand of God?
Answer: We know that the exalted God-man, Christ
a. as our prophet sends people to proclaim the saving Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit;
b. as our priest pleads and prays for us before the Father;
c. as our king rules and protects His church and governs over all the world especially for the benefit of His church.

PRAYER REQUEST FOR PASTOR'S AUNT LOIS

Please pray for Lois - she is back in the hospital and is going to have her other leg amputated below the knee today.

She was given the option of amputation or to try plastic surgery to repair her arteries - she chose plastic surgery but the surgeon was not able to be successful - He said her arteries are so friable that they just fell apart every time he touched them.  She was in ICU today because of high blood pressure after that surgery yesterday but they now have her scheduled for surgery today.

Things are not looking good at all - please pray for her and her kids and grandkids.

DEVOTION:
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:6

To the best of my knowledge, maple syrup is not a fruit.

If it was, I might teasingly suggest the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden might have been a sugar maple. Those of us who love real maple syrup might better understand Adam and Eve's fall, if Satan had been offering them a stack of pancakes covered with real maple syrup.

That, my friends, would have been a serious temptation. And I'm not alone in that belief.

As proof, allow me to share that thieves have been stealing Canadian maple syrup -- a lot of Canadian maple syrup. It's true. A recent check of the giant maple syrup storage facility in the small town of Saint Louis de Blandford revealed that some of the barrels which were supposed to be full of maple syrup were empty.

Somehow, in some way, thieves had stolen 10 million pounds or 15,000 barrels of the stuff. How they did it, when they did it, and where they're storing the syrup, remain a mystery. Only one thing is certain: this much missing syrup is a serious setback to the world's strategic syrup supply.

This takes me to the rather obvious point of this devotion. That point is this: when he wants to tempt us, the devil almost always uses some kind of delectable bait. By that I mean he dangles before us something, which looks good, tastes good, smells good, feels good. Delectable.

He got Eve to sin using something that looked good. He did the same when it came time to tempt King David. When it was Jesus' turn, he suggested that fasting-Jesus just might like to sink His teeth into some fresh baked bread. Again and again, Satan takes something God has forbidden and tells us, "Go ahead, your enjoyment won't cause any problem."

Now understand, the temptation he uses on you may be different than what he uses on me. What I find appealing, you may find revolting. What is certain is this: Satan has been tempting people for a long time, and he will place before us that temptation we will find most appealing. This, in part, explains why all of us -- every one of us -- are sinners.

It also explains why all of us need a Savior. Only God's Son has been able to live His life -- from start to finish -- without buying into Satan's temptations. Again and again, Jesus resisted Satan's suggestions to abandon the mission that would lead to His death and our salvation. Again and again, He turned down the temptation to save Himself at the cost of losing us.

Now, because Jesus lived, suffered, died and rose for us, there is forgiveness when we fall into sin, when we stumble at one of Satan's temptations.

There is forgiveness and there is salvation because Jesus said, "No" to Satan's delectable bait.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I give thanks for a Savior who said, "No!" when I would have said, "Yes!" May I give thanks for what He has done and learn from His example. In His Name I ask it. Amen
