Pastor's knee update

If you've seen me hobbling and limping around the last couple weeks you may be wondering what was wrong, probably not, but that's ok.  I still love you!

For those who were wondering, I went to the orthopedic doc today and he said nothing was torn that needed immediate surgery.  He did say that my knee is like an old tire, not much tread left, lots of scars, and not much time left on it.  We could add a patch to it, but it is eventually going to blow anyway.

Translation, he'll keep it going like an old car, keep giving me shots and pain meds, but eventually it's going to need to be replaced, all depending on how I react to the steroid shot, ice, rest and strength exercises.  Anyway, I'm a 46 year old with a 70 year old knee.

At any rate, this is going to slow down my weight loss goal, but I'll keep working at it.

Thanks for praying if you did!  Keep praying that with treatment and proper care it lasts a few more years.

DEVOTION: Matthew 21:23-32  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" 24 Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?" And they discussed it among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' 26 But if we say, 'From man,' we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet." 27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' 29 And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him."

Last week it was the parable of the vineyard workers where whether they worked one hour or eight hours they were paid the same.  Today we see that the one who messed up, but then realized his mistake, repented, and went to work was the right one, and that tax collectors and prostitutes were going into the kingdom before the "righteous" scribes and Pharisees.  It's like Jesus is trying to tell us something.  What?

        Very simply, he is telling us that what truly matters is listening to the Lord when he calls.  It is hearing his voice and doing what he asks.  If the tax collectors and prostitutes turn from their sin and toward Jesus, they will live.  On the other hand, if a person sits in church every week and looks good on the outside, but on the inside is full of all manner of sin, and does not turn from it, he will die in his sin.

        The Pharisees weren't listening.  He had been telling them who he was over and over again.  He had already told them where he got his authority.  They were too busy worrying about their status and their own good deeds.  They were focused on themselves and paid no attention to Jesus unless he threatened their status.

        It's the listening that matters!  Listen to God's Word today!  Don't worry about what you look like to others on the outside or how much work you've done for the Lord.  Let the Lord break your will and make you simply surrender to his. His will is easy!  Repent and believe the good news!  Listen to the Lord and turn to Him so that what He sees on the inside is presentable and clean before the Lord!

Prayer: Lord, break me so that I have no other option but to listen to you, repent, and believe the good news.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: What is the flying scroll in Zechariah?

We got two answers yesterday.  The first one is from Pat King and the second one is from Don Nolte

What is the flying scroll in Zechariah?

So, no, this was not an ancient flying saucer. I know, other people may tell you it was, but trust me on this, it wasn't. The contents of the scroll was a curse, which was sent out over the entire earth, to judge all mankind. It will ultimately be finished on Judgment Day.

Anyway, here are just 2 of the many interesting articles written about it:

http://bethanybible.org/new/bible-study/pm/2011-03-23/the-flying-scroll-zechariah-5-1-4

http://www.biblicalhorizons.com/biblical-horizons/no-67-a-flying-scroll/

 It was the curse of God on all those who failed to keep His Law perfectly.  Zachariah 5:1-4

DEVOTION:  Philippians 2:1-18  English Standard Version (ESV)

Christ's Example of Humility

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[b] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[c] being born in the likeness of men.And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Lights in the World

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

Can you be proud and humble at the same time?  It depends on what you are proud of.  It's wonderful to be proud of your church, but don't be proud of the people, they are all poor miserable sinners like you. Don't be proud of the pastor, he's the chief of all the sinners.  Instead be proud of the truth that is preached, believed, and confessed!  Be proud of Jesus the author and perfecter of your faith, the builder and keeper of your church, and the reason you will go to heaven!

        Don't be proud of yourself, for in the same instance you can both do something great and sin at the same time.  As God says in Leviticus "Pride comes before the fall."  Those who are proud of other people or of their own accomplishments or how many friends the have on Facebook, or how many trophies they have, or how many people like them, are bound to be disappointed and the more proud you are, the greater the fall, the bigger the disappointment.

        It's all about you decreasing so Jesus can increase.  Having a mind of humility will bring you closer to Jesus and will help you to see how much you must rely on Jesus.  Have peace in Christ today so that no matter what happens whether you succeed or fail in what you do today, God will be praised!

Prayer: Lord, keep me from being prideful of anything that distracts from you and your grace.  Help me to keep my own eyes fixed on you so that others may see you as well.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 25:1-10  English Standard Version (ESV)

Teach Me Your Paths

[a] Of David.

25 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Isn't it great to know that God doesn't remember the sins of our youth, or any sins for that matter?  BY virtue of his son's death and resurrection, in his infinite mercy and grace, he has forgotten our sins!  He has truly forgotten them.  He has put them out of his mind forever.

You may think this is impossible, because you probably remember A LOT of your sins.  Your guilt probably still weighs heavy on your heart for past sins.  You can't forget them no matter how hard you try.  You probably also remember, and Satan is really good and getting you to remember, that there are many who have sinned against you, and many of them have never apologized or asked for forgiveness.

God isn't like that.  He is omniscient, so when we are unable to forget, or when we call to mind past sins, long forgiven and forgotten by God, he forgot them!  In fact, when he sees you in our faith and belief in Jesus, he sees Jesus!  When he looks at you, he sees his son, Jesus!  Isn't that fantastic?  Isn't that a relief?

So live free today!  Live free from your past sins.  When Satan is there to help you remember, tell him to bug off, that the Lord has forgotten them and you will too!  Then trust in the Holy Spirit to give you the power to forget again and again and to live in the peace, mercy, and grace of Christ!

Have a blessed day y'all!

Prayer: Lord God, you have forgotten my sins.  THANK YOU!  Give me the power to forget them as well.  Amen.

For CAL TAMELER who is HOME and is recovering from surgeries and a heart attack.

For ANGIE BRUNSON, who is at home, but is still dealing with blood clots and an infection after a trouble from a hysterectomy.

PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL:

For SAM HARGROVE deployed in Amman, Jordan and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, COLTON FIGURA stationed in California, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.

For CALEB FIGURA AND VINCE MASTERS who are both serving our country in the National Guard and take time out of their lives, jobs, and families to go on duty several times a year.
