DEVOTION:  Romans 4:1-8  English Standard Version (ESV)

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness." Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in[a] him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

"Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
    and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin."

13 For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.

16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations"—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

I can't explain the life of faith any better than this passage does.  Abraham wasn't justified because of all the good things he did, because he did a lot of bad things too. He was justified by faith!!  He was justified before God, because he believed God and trusted him.  Yes, that trust worked itself in him doing things like leaving his home and moving to a land he didn't know.  It also worked itself out when he willingly took his only son Isaac up on to the mountain to sacrifice him.

It's a good message for us.  It tells us that when the Lord asks us to do things in faith, such as give our tithes and offerings, or use our time for His work, or forgive someone whom we don't think deserves it, or whatever it might be, we simply do it, because we have a God who loves us, cares for us, and sent His Son to die for us!

Most of all it helps us to realize how everything that we are and will be is up to God's mercy and grace and all we can do is trust in Him.  At the end of the day and at the end of our lives all we can do is have faith in an Almighty, omniscient, omnipresent, loving and gracious God.  There is no better place to put your faith!

Let us pray: Lord, help me to have faith in You alone today.  Amen.
