DEVOTIONS:  1 John 3:1-3

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

I used to think, especially when I was a kid, that Christianity and salvation were only something for us to have for much later, somewhat like an insurance policy.  It didn't have much bearing on my life at the present time.  Jesus died for my sins so I can go to heaven.

As many things have happened in my life, as I have made my share of HUGE mistakes, and as I have gone through tragedy and helped others through tragedy I am convinced more and more that Christianity is as much for here and now as it is for life after death.  It is, after all the junk is stripped away and after we face the facts, what gets us through this life.  Frankly, I don't know how unbelievers do it.  I don't know how they get through life with out faith in a loving Lord Jesus.

Brothers and sisters, we are God's children NOW, and because we are we can rest in His grace NOW!  As much as we fail, as much as we are disappointed, and as weak as we are, isn't it a great thing to know that we are God's children and that He will not leave us or forsake us.  As weak as we are we can take true and real comfort in the gifts of God here on earth right NOW!  The baptism we own shows us that we have already been washed of ALL sin.  The blood we drink and the body we eat gives us real and true forgiveness and strength NOW!

I want you to know that you are God's child NOW!  As long as you hold on to faith and Jesus and don't reject His love and forgiveness for you, you will remain His children.  If you are struggling with faith or questioning it, or if you have questions about Jesus or about anything at all, please feel free to talk to me day or night.  636-359-1061!!!  I love you, but Jesus loves you even more!

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR OCTOBER IS CANNED VEGETABLES!! !
Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids.

Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.
Throughout the month of October we will be collecting canned veggies. All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools November 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.
