DEVOTION:  I was cupbearer for the king.  In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him,  I took the wine and gave it to the king.  Nehemiah 1:11b-12

A cupbearer doesn't sound like a very important position does it?  The cupbearer was the one who actually kept track of the king's cup, filled it up with wine or whatever, and gave it to the king at meals.

Sounds like a pretty easy and cushy job until you realize what it meant.  It meant you held the king's life in your hand, and if someone got to that cup to poison the king, you woul dbe the one responsible.  it would be your life for his life.   Takes on a whole different meaning, doesn't it?

Nehemiah was so trustworthy that the king trusted him with is very life.  This, of course, begs the question, how trustworthy are you?  Can you be trusted with someone else's life?  Does God trust you?

God put Nehemiah in this position of trust so that he could, in the course of time, help his people get back to their homeland after their captivit and rebuild the temple and the holy city of Jerusalem.  Nehemiah had gained such trust from the king that the king was willing to let Nehemiah be in charge of getting the people back.  He was so trustworthy that the king had no suspicions about him at all.

A lot of times we do things and say things to break trust with people.  All of us fail at that at one time or another.  It is a terrible thing when it happens, and the person who believes in God feels horrible when the y do or say somethng to break trust.  We feel miserable, especially when it is someone we are close to and someone we love.

Thanks be to God that He does not break His trust with us.  he is completely trustworthy and in His trustworthiness He has promised that He will always care for us and that His SOn death on the cross and resurrection from the dead is for us.

Nehemiah is a great example and reminder of our God.  Nehemiah held the king's life in his hands.  Our Lord God holds our life in His hands and He could, at any time, take our lives away and give us eternal death instead, but He has mercy and grace and keeps us in His arms for ever!

Be reminded of God's true grace every day through the hearing and reading of His Word, and be a reminder to others, just like Nehemiah was, of who God is to us and how much He loves us and keeps His promises.

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to be trustworthy like Nehemiah so that I may be a reminder of how trsutworthy you truly are, and when I stumble help me to be a reminder in my repentance, humility and forgiveness.  Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question: What is the special work of the Holy Spirit?
Answer: The Holy SPirit sanctifies me (makes me holy) by bringing me to faith in Christ, so that I might hav ethe blessings of redemption and lead a godly life (sanctification int he wide sense).

Note: The word sanctification is used in two ways
1. Wide sense- the whole work of the Holy Spirit by which he brings us ot faith and also enables us to lead a godly life.
2. Narrow sense-- that part of the Holy Spirit's work by which He directs and empowers the believers to lead a godly life.

STEWARDSHIP SPOLIGHT FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PATRIOT PACKAGES
As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are.

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.
