DEVOTION: Revelation 7:9-17English Standard Version (ESV)

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen."

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" 14 I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15 "Therefore they are before the throne of God,
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
    and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
    the sun shall not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
    and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

A blessed REFORMATION DAY to everyone!  Today marks the 500th anniversary of the day Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses to the castle church door in Wittenberg, Germany sparking a change in the world that would last till this very day and will most likely go till Jesus returns on judgment day.  On that day we will see for ourselves the sight that is played out in our reading for today.

        It is quite a sight!  All of those who are saints, that is, all those who have believed in Jesus as their Lord and Savior, are before the throne of God rejoicing and praising him, giving him the glory for their salvation.  They are in perfect peace, perfect joy, perfect forgiveness forever.

        The other most wonderful truth is that those we love, who have died in the faith, are already there!  They are already resting in the real presence of Almighty God!  They are already enjoying the scene!  Rejoice in this truth!  Rejoice in this fact!  It is a real thing!

        I am personally so very thankful to God that he brought the Gospel to light through Martin Luther.  That he got rid of the corruption that was so clouding and tainting the pure and real Gospel, and that the Lord provided for the great mind of Luther to have him translate the Bible into German from Greek so that the people could have God's Word in their own language!  Praise the Lord!!

        Here's the real truth of the Reformation today that I want to be sure you know: God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but shall have eternal life!  Know, believe, and trust in the Gospel today!  Trust in Jesus and rest in His grace!

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for Martin Luther, for the Reformation, and especially for the pure and real Gospel by which we are saved.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 149 English Standard Version (ESV)

Sing to the Lord a New Song

149 Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of the godly!
Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
    let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!
Let them praise his name with dancing,
    making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
    he adorns the humble with salvation.
Let the godly exult in glory;
    let them sing for joy on their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their throats
    and two-edged swords in their hands,
to execute vengeance on the nations
    and punishments on the peoples,
to bind their kings with chains
    and their nobles with fetters of iron,
to execute on them the judgment written!
    This is honor for all his godly ones.
Praise the Lord!

I know everyone knows that tomorrow is Halloween, but here's a question for you… what is on Wednesday?  That's right!  It's All Saints Day! It's the day we celebrate all those who have gone before us into rest with Jesus.  It is also the day we celebrate our current sainthood!

     You read that right!  You are already a saint if you believe in Jesus as Savior, because it is God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit living in you by virtue of your faith that makes you holy!  It is the washing of water with the Word in holy baptism that makes you holy.  It is the forgiveness of God in Christ that makes you holy.  It is the Holy Spirit continually working through His Word and Sacrament that makes you holy.

     Notice that I said nothing about you being holy on your own.  You don't get holy by your own good works but through God's good works in you!  You are holy!  You are righteous!  You are perfect in the Lord!

     Rejoice in your sainthood today!  Have joy in the fact that God has already made you holy!  Have peace in the fact that there is nothing more you need to do to be in God's good will and grace.

     Rest in Him today, but also look forward to the day when you will slough off this body and the sin that so easily entangles you, and receive the new glorified body!  Look forward to the day of judgment when you will be reunited with Jesus and all your loved ones who believed in him, for all eternity!  Rest in His grace!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my holiness!  Thank you for filling me with yourself so that I can live forever in and with you.  Amen.

Reformation Sunday festivities will be moved indoors

Since the high for Sunday is only supposed to be in the 40s and it is supposed to be windy, we'll plan on having the festival inside.  We'll still have a bounce house and other fun things for the kids outside so you can still plan on that.

Have a peace filled day y'all!

DEVOTION:  John 8:31-36  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 They answered him, "We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, 'You will become free'?"

34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave[a] to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Freedom is something we in the United States take for granted.  We just go about our day not thinking that there are people in many nations of the world who are not allowed to worship freely, to have the job you want, to talk about your faith, to go to the grocery store, to have land, etc.  We take all these things for granted because we've always had them.

        The Pharisees had the same thing.  Even though their ancestors had been slaves in Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon to name a few, they, themselves, were never slaves to anyone.  So they were offended when Jesus told them that they would be set free.  They were already free.

        What Jesus really meant is what he says next.  Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  I was a slave, you were a slave, everyone who has ever sinned was a slave to sin.  I say "was", because Christ has come and set you free from that sin that once held you captive.  You don't have to remain in it.  You can run to the risen Christ and throw it off at his feet.  You don't have to hold on to your guilt ever again.  When you sin, you can quickly run to Jesus and ask for forgiveness, knowing that he is faithful and just to forgive your sin and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.  When the devil tries to convince you that you are still guilty of sin, you can tell off the devil, and remind him that Jesus already died and rose for ALL of your sin!

        If THE SON SETS YOU FREE YOU ARE FREE INDEED!!  You are free from guilt, and shame!  You are free from further punishment.  You are free to live a grace filled life with joy and peace!  Don't take it for granted!  Don't slough it off.  Don't ignore it!  Live it in all its fullness and truth!  LIVE IT FREE!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for making me free forever.  Amen.
