DEVOTION: Psalm 34:12-22 English Standard Version (ESV)
12 What man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones;
not one of them is broken.
21 Affliction will slay the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;
none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

DISCIPLE MAKERS/SUNDAY SCHOOL CHANGE
Back at the beginning of June we started an activity on Wednesday nights called "Disciple Makers'. It was received well, but because of summer schedules and several other factors, it was not well attended after the first couple weeks. There were also some things that a few commented on that they didn't enjoy very much and so some suggestions were made along the way to make it more enjoyable and user-friendly. I have made the suggested adjustments and am ready to get it going again so that it can be the successful program we all want it to be. .
Also, since many of your schedules are such that you can't make it on Wednesday nights during the school year, we are going to offer it on Sundays at 10:45 as well. It will be a combination of Sunday school and worship with lots of FUN stuff. It will take the place of the current Sunday school program so you can either come on Sundays or Wednesdays and get the same thing.
I love your kids so much, and I want them to know the Bible as well as they are able, so that they can be positive influences in the world and react to the devil's schemes with the confidence that comes from knowing God's will. To put it simply, if you want your children to be good, strong, confident Christians they MUST be at Disciple Makers WITH you!
I know how tight your schedules are. While you should be in both regular worship and Disciple Makers, I understand where that might not be possible all the time. Understanding this, I have incorporated a bit of worship time into the Disciple Makers weekly schedule. So if you find that you can't make it for two hours on a Sunday or one hour on Sunday and one on Wednesday, try as hard as you can to make it to at least one hour of Disciple Makers with your kids.
SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS: this is your confirmation class for this year. Every other year we go through the Scriptures, so this is simply taking the place of "The Story" that we had been using the last several years.
HIGH SCHOOLERS: it's never too late to learn the Scriptures like you should, and because many of you are planning on going to the National Youth Gathering in July of 2019, I am expecting you to participate in your faith and be at Disciple Makers as much as possible.
PRESCHOOLERS-SIXTH GRADERS: Confirmation really begins the moment your child is baptized, as from little on they need to know the Scriptures. Disciple Makers is a prime opportunity and tool to grow your kids in the faith. Your kids need to know their Bibles and so do you! Get them into it!! Decide that this is going to be the year that you begin a new discipline of learning the Scriptures TOGETHER as a family.
Here's a sample schedule so you know what to expect.
5-10 min- Opening with songs or videos or both
20-25 min- Lesson of the Day, this will include all different sorts of learning tools: songs, skits, games, etc.
15-20 min- age appropriate activity, craft, or game ending with- Family Faith5 and Free time
Always remember that I love you and my only goal is to make sure you're all in heaven with me some day!

National Youth Gathering-- July 9-15, 2019-- Minneapolis, MN
Summer isn't even over yet, and I'm already getting excited for next Summer and the National Youth Gathering!! It's still 11 months away, but there are already things that need to happen and information that I need to gather from all who want to participate.
Why should you go to the National Youth Gathering?
1. Faith- This once in a lifetime experience will help you grow tremendously in your faith and
Christian life!
2. Fellowship- Seeing 30,000 other Lutheran Christian youth just like you and growing with your immediate church family is something you'll take with you the rest of your life.
3. Fun. So much fun you'll be exhausted at the end of each day and you'll need a week to recover. (Mass events, Mall of America, Seeing where pastor grew up, downtown Minneapolis is awesome)
If you want to go, Please fill out the necessary worksheets and get them back to me prior to Wednesday, October 17 along with a $100 nonrefundable deposit per individual going. It is $365 each for registration. The total cost is going to be $925-$1,000 per person depending on a few variables. Only those who are ages 14-19 (going into 9th grade-high school graduates) and only those who have helped with fundraisers or have paid their own way are eligible to go.
Dates to Remember
September 5- First NYG meeting at 6:30pm—Bring your forms filled out so that Pastor can begin entering information online. At the meeting I will give you a good idea of what a day at the gathering looks like.
October 17- Official Postmark date for Deposit and official forms (Information for all Gathering Participants plus $100 nonrefundable deposit MUST be in to Pastor. If you can't afford the whole $100, I will accept five $20 payments.) We must have the correct numbers of people going so we can get the correct number of hotel rooms and so that we don't lose any money. Hotel choice is first come, first served.
January- Confirmations sent out to churches
March 2- registration rate increases.
Early Spring- Hotel info sent out
Early April- Hotel deposit is due
May 1- Full registration payment is due for express registration at gathering
May 29- Last day to add any late registrations
Please make this as easy on me as possible. I don't want to have to chase you down or continually remind you to get your forms in. If I don't hear from you about these things and I don't get the necessary form in on time, I will assume that you aren't going and I'll be very sad. Always remember that Jesus loves you and so do I and both of us want you to grow in your faith as much as possible! The Gathering is the biggest and best way to make that happen!
