DEVOTION:
The LORD said) "... I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. To whom will you compare Me or count Me equal? ..." Isaiah 46:4b-5a

Just last month I took a minor risk and set up a small business.

Unlike any other thing I have ever attempted, I was confident I could make this work. I knew it because my product was in an area I knew and understood. Even more, when I started, I was fully confident I had the right number of clientele to make this endeavor successful. I had the necessary contacts and I was guaranteed success in this just because I was the one doing it!

Have you noticed the frequency of "I" in all that? I certainly didn't.

At least not until the very first week of work when things I was depending on failed to pan out and people I was counting on disappointed me.

To say I was anxious is to put it mildly. I was on the verge of depression. I had been so sure of immediate success that I felt like God had failed me. The prayer I addressed to Him was not a pleasant one. That's when I realized: not once in my frantic rush to get going had I considered bringing the matter before God. I hadn't paused to reflect in prayer. Indeed, I barely had time for my regular times with God.

Once I realized I had only come to God to accuse and to complain, I had to sit down and re-evaluate my approach to life's challenges.

Is God only the God of my troubles? Can He not also take credit for my successes and play a role in my plans and ambitions?

Can I not trust God to make things right even before they go wrong? Indeed, do I do us both a disservice by depending on me when the Triune God desires to be my rock and my shelter, the provider of all my needs? After all, we only need to look at His Son in Bethlehem's manger, on Calvary's cross and at the empty tomb to see His willingness to do what is necessary for us.

By His grace, my elementary business endeavor has been a time of insight and spiritual development much beyond anything I could have hoped to gain from this experience.

God does not only rescue me in times of trouble, but He also sustains every day. He is willing to carry me, with all my burdens, trials, tribulation, joys and successes. To whom, then, can I compare Him?

He will carry you as well.

THE PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to know You are able to carry us with all our burdens, trials, tribulations, joys and successes. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: To whom did Jeremiah mainly prophecy?  Jeremiah was mainly a prophet to Judah who at the time he began as a prophet,  was being ruled by Josiah.  Josiah was a good king yet Jeremiah proclaimed mostly bad things in the future for Judah because of sins of the past.  (Thank you Denise)

It's Time to start thinking about our MEN'S RETREAT!!

The ninth annual T-3 Men's Retreat is set for Friday-Sunday, September 23-25, 2011.  This promises to be another great experience for the men of St John's and other Lutheran congregations in the St. Charles area.  In fact, men from all over the metro area have joined this special time in the past.  Men 18 years of age or older are eligible and they need not be Lutheran to attend.  The retreat will be held at Mark Twain State Park at the Si Coburn Group Camp.  This is a beautiful setting  for a weekend of adventure and growth.  The theme of this year's retreat is "Respectable Sins" and the study times during the retreat will be spent exploring the areas of our lives where we have come to accept less than God might want from us.

The retreat will feature great food and a lot of activities  A scramble golf tournament, fishing tournament, trap and skeet shooting competition, and euchre tournament all take place on Saturday morning.   If none of these interest you, you may choose to spend time reading, hiking , biking, site seeing, or napping.  Prizes are awarded to tournament winners at dinner on Saturday evening. Campfires on Friday and Saturday nights provide the opportunity to get to know others better under the stars.   Music is a big part of the camp experience and you will enjoy hearing and singing familiar songs with the 100+ men who typically attend.  The culminating worship service on Sunday morning is a special time of praising God for all His gifts to us and a great way to prepare us to return to our homes and lives.

The cost of the retreat is only $42 and this includes meals and a commemorative tee-shirt.  Attendees have the option of staying in group cabins or tent camping on the grounds at no additional charge.  You can even arrange to stay in a local motel near the camp at reduced rates if you like.

A brochure with all information and a registration form will be available soon in the narthex.  You can also register online at www.t3mensretreat.org using PayPal.  It is really easy and you can see pictures of the camp and facilities there, too.

This is the year for you to go to the T-3 (trap-tackle-tees) Retreat.  Sign up, meet new friends, bring old friends, and join in the fun of growing your faith.  For more information, contact  Don Hugo at Zion –636 441-7425 ext 246 or home 636 441-9954.

DEVOTION:
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Recently, one of our Daily Devotions caused a number of our readers to respond with stories from their past. One of the sweetest was this which was shared by Jeanette Eaton. We thank her for letting us see this vignette of a Christian household. It was a blessing to me as I pray it will be to you. Pastor Klaus

Every once in a while one of the Daily Devotion listeners shares a story with me that is worth repeating. One such story came from Jeanette Eaton.

Eaton shares how years ago her mother baked a cake (chocolate, of course) for a church picnic the family was to attend. As Eaton went out the back door, she saw the cake and gave it a test. She put her finger in it and, well, this is how she told me: "I went ahead and put my finger in it. And oh so good, but I wasn't smart enough to cover it up, and I just went on outside."

"Later, of course, my mother was displeased. Mom was displeased, but it was daddy who lined us up and asked, 'Who did it?' Of course, nobody confessed. Daddy took each of us into the kitchen, saving me for last because I was the oldest. When he took me to the kitchen, he put my finger in the hole. Just as a leopard can't change its spots, a third-grader can't change her finger size. I had been discovered and was rightly punished.

"But I learned something that day. And, even though I did my share of more bad things, I never told my daddy another lie. Daddy knew that. I'm glad he did. That's because later when I was confronted and accused of lying, my daddy just said, 'She may be guilty of a lot of things, but she's not a liar.'"

Now there are a lot of ways I could use Eaton's story.

Allow me to say this. Each day you and I commit many sins. Each day the Lord discovers us in those sins and because of His Son's sacrifice forgives us of them.

In these things our story is like Eaton's.

But I wonder how many of us can say, "I learned something that day"?

I wonder how many of us can confess, "I never did that sin again"?

It would be a good thing if we did. You see, repentance is not just being sorry for what we've done in the past; it's striving not to repeat the sin in the future.

It's the second part of repentance that's hard; it's the second part I'm going to have to work at.

And I invite you to join me in trying.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I truly am sorry for my sins. Now I pray that my faith may be of a quality that I am sorry enough to leave behind those sins and habits of which I am repentant. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1

The young girls wanted to earn enough money so they could go to the local water park. To that end they built a lemonade stand and began their first foray into the business world.

It didn't take too long before they found out how cruel that world can be.

They had only been established for a short period of time before the police stopped by and spoke to them about some things they might have forgotten. You know, things like a business license and a food and vendor's permit.

It was the end of their business.

Excuse me; it should have been the end of their business.

When the girls' story went on the air, people started to talk about how they might help. The biggest and bestest offer came from the employees at Calypso Lemonade, one of the nation's largest lemonade-flavor companies. Those folks at Calypso banded together on behalf of their mini-competitors and contributed enough to pick up the girls' permits, their licenses and give them a summer's worth of product to sell.

Using a word used by the apostle John, the girls had found an "advocate" in the personnel of Calypso.

That is, they found someone who could help them, someone who would run interference for them, someone who could make things happen when they were helpless -- someone who could bring their dead business back to life.

Now I probably could stop this devotion right here. You know what I'm going to say, don't you?

In Jesus, our Advocate has found us. By God's grace Jesus is Someone who will help us, Someone who has and continues to run interference for us, Someone who rescues the damned, Someone who finds the lost, Someone who ....

Jesus has -- through His life, His death, His resurrection -- done all we sinners could not do for ourselves.

He has done it all, and that is more than we could have expected.

It is more than enough.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks for my Advocate, Jesus. When I have been helpless, lost, doomed and damned, He has taken my place and conquered. Now His victory has been given to me. May I be forever appreciative of Jesus Christ, God's Son, my Savior and Advocate. Amen. .

DEVOTION:
And He (Jesus) said to His disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come!" Luke 17:1

Ashley was offered a job opportunity that was too good to be true.

That was what the sophisticated lady at the Wal-Mart in Harrisville, Utah, told her. The lady went on to explain she was a recruiter for a restaurant chain, and they were looking for someone like Ashley who would receive bonuses and become "manager material."

Ashley said the job "looked good, sounded good," and the lady talking to her was "really, really nice."

That's why Ashley eagerly filled out the application. She gladly shared detailed information about herself. She gave her full name; she wrote down past work experiences, and she shared the names, numbers and addresses of other friends.

When they asked Ashley for the particulars concerning her bank account, she never hesitated. After all, she had been told the money coming to her as a future supervisor would soon be pouring in.

The lady had told the truth. When Ashley checked her account, she was pleased to find some extra deposits had been made. It was only when that money disappeared and took with it the rest of her account that Ashley became truly concerned.

She should have been concerned. She had just joined the growing ranks of people in Utah who had been bilked out of their hard-earned cash.

It is hardly the first time such a thing has happened. Adam and Eve were bilked out of the Garden when they listened to an offer too good to be true. David found Bathsheba was too good to be true, as did Judas who betrayed his Master for 30 pieces of silver.

If you look back at your life, maybe you can find such an incident -- a moment in time when you bought into a temptation that was too good to be true.

If so, give thanks for your forgiving Savior. When we sin, He forgives. When we stumble, He picks us up. When we fall victim to an enticing temptation, He ransoms us through His blood upon the cross.

Jesus is the one Person who is too good to be true but who is ... true, that is.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, temptations come to us and all too often we fall victim to them. We pray You will grant us a faith that will help us discern when the forces of evil are encouraging us to follow something that is really too good to be true. This I ask in the Savior's Name. Amen.

Dear Family & Friends,

Please read my mother's message below.  A sincere thank you from our entire family for your caring thoughts, kind words, and daily prayers.  We are truly Blessed to have such an awesome support system.  While Anna & Gracie were having a play date in The Marian Alexander Playroom last evening, I read a quote on the wall that seems to be the perfect ending to this chapter of Anna's heart story...

St. John's Group Email quick update on Molly Hendershot

Molly's symptoms have gotten much better.  She is in ICU at Progress West.  The trouble has not yet been fully identified, but is most likely NOT a stroke.  It could quite possibly have been caused by an infection.

St. John's Group Email prayer request for Molly Hendershot

Pray for Molly hendershot who went to the hospital this afternoon with a possible stroke.

St. John's Group Email Golf Update

As of today, I have a list of 16 hole sponsors (attached) and 31 players. I e-mailed area churches again to remind their members.

Hopefully, if we would just get a little cooler weather and people turn over their calendars to August, they will be reminded to sign up for play. Last year we had 40 and I would like to beat that.

Thank you.
Alan

Hi Pastor.  Could you please add me and my family to the prayer list?  I am having surgery tomorrow to have some cysts and growths removed.  They are non-cancerous.  My recovery will however take a while.

Also, another family member is awaiting some test results that could be pre-cancerous.

Thank you for your prayers.

DEVOTION:  count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ. Philippians 3:8

You don't have to be a baseball fan to have heard the tragic story of 39-year-old Shannon Stone.

Since a few weeks have gone by since his fatal accident, let me share the details of his story. Stone, an 18-year veteran firefighter went to a Texas Ranger's baseball game with his son. Both father and son were big fans of the Rangers, and the father wished to give his son the supreme souvenir anybody can take home from a big-league game.

Stone wanted to give his son a ball that had been used in play.

That's why, when all-star outfielder Josh Hamilton tossed a ball into the stands, Stone reached for it. He put everything he had into that reach and he ended up falling to the concrete below. He died on the way to the hospital.

After the incident various people suggested that Stone had been drunk; he wasn't. Others tried to offer all kinds of excuses for -- and accusations against -- the father.

As for me, I understand. There are some things in life which demand you give your all. No, it may not mean you die trying to get a baseball, but there are some things -- not many, but some things -- which call for a person to commit everything he's got to achieving that goal.

I've stood on battlefields around the world and known that there people fought and bled and died for a cause in which they believed. They gave their all.

For years I've preached the story of the Savior who felt that the price of our redemption was worth the cost of His life. Jesus' entire life was spent giving His all.

I've read the words of St. Paul who felt it was a small thing to give up all he had been so he might receive the salvation won by the Savior. How does the apostle say it ... "I have suffered the loss of all things and count those things as being rubbish, so that I may have the Redeemer."

Paul was speaking for many people when he wrote those words.

He was speaking for anyone who has recognized the greatness of his sin and knows he is deserving of eternal punishment. He was speaking for all who have seen the Father above send His Son to take our sin and punishment upon Himself. He was talking about all who have received the blood-bought forgiveness which Jesus won upon the cross.

Paul was talking for all who knew they have been saved by grace alone.

I pray St. Paul was talking about you and me: people who give thanks the Savior gave His all for our salvation.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for having lived, died and risen for my salvation, I give thanks. You offered everything You had so I might be forgiven and granted eternal life. Now may the Holy Spirit motivate me so my life may be spent praising and giving thanks to You. In Your Name I ask it. Amen.

St. John's Group Email update on Jonas (Don Nolte's grandson)

Well, the first week of chemo is almost complete.  The upset stomach and constipation have run their course and Jonas is feeling much better today.  Whether it be real or perceived I don't care, but he feels that the pain in his face and head are diminishing a bit, too!  That could be an indicator that the chemo is having an effect on the tumor---making it shrink .. or let go.. or has got it in a full-nelson,.. something!  Yesterday afternoon he walked the halls again, worked with a physical therapist, and sat in a recliner for almost an hour.  He watched a small portion of contraband video brought by one of his friends, even though tv normally still gives him a headache.  All a good sign.  At one point he thought he was getting some shadowy vision back in his left eye which turned out to be wishful thinking.  This morning he confirmed that it is not at all so.

More great news.  Jonas will be headed to MD Anderson in Texas earlier than expected. Originally, Children's Mercy had made arrangements to transfer him there if and when he reaches the surgical phase at the end of ALL his chemo treatments, which is almost 8 months down the line from now.  However, as we looked more and more into the radiation phase, we learned something very interesting about MD Anederson.  They offer a form of radiation that is not available here.  It is called Proton Therapy.  I need to research it more thoroughly, but I think I have a basic understanding of it, which is this.  PT is equally as effective as basic radiation, but it is more advanced than basic radiation in that it more directly targets the cancer itself with less collateral damage to the surrounding structures.  MD Anderson only accepts specific cases that are special needs for the location of thier tumor, and Jonas fits that criteria.  Traditional radiation would be done by a machine that is placed up against Jonas' head (most likely the cheek and jaw area) and radiation is beamed through to target the tumor.  Because of the location of Jonas' tumor there would most certainly be damage to his left eye, left ear,his jaw, his teeth, his tongue, his sinuses, his pituitary gland and even his brain.  Proton Therapy would not eliminate (I don't think) the chance of all damage, but would drastically make a difference to the severity of damage to all those other features.  If ever there was a case where PT should be used, this is it!
Sooooooooooooooo.... Looks like we might be in Houson just in time for Halloween.

Jonas got his Fight the Fight bracelets last night and LOVES them!  He is sending most of them to grandparents and family out of state, but shared a few with some his favorite nurses, too.  When I told him about the Pancake Breakfast and that some of his teachers were going to wait tables he didn't believe me, but ended up saying, "That's so cool... I wish I could go. " lol

He mentioned last night that this year he missed stings camp and robotics camp. Two of his favorite summer events.  And asked me to double check with Mr. Morales about the chance to see the final concert on video.  If you can go, the concert is today at 1:00 at Pleasant Lea Middle School.  I heard there are LOTS of LS kids there this year.  Should be awesome.

I will post again tonite. Too much for one sitting. = )

Jonas I have been thinking about you a lot and I was in Houston this past week and was near the MD Anderson building.  It is huge!  I took a picture of it and sent it to Lizzy and I believe your mom saw it too.  The Proton building is pretty close to as well.  You better start working on your best Texan impersonation!

You have all the right weapons to beat this!  You have the strength of a pitcher and the mental toughness of a wrestler.  With this combination this tumor doesn't stand a chance.

I should be in the KC area next week and I will come by for a visit.

See you soon,

Uncle Scott

Hooray for the good news of MD Anderson!!!  Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers constantly!  Glad you were able to get up and move some.  Hoping you can get a little better rest with a bit of relief from the pain.  Love and hugs coming your way!!!

Oh my goodness this is amazing news! I read these to my mom and we both just light up when these messages just get better and better. The news about getting to Texas earlier is very possibly the best news yet! Of course we are all waiting for the best news down the road :) When you make it to Texas we will have to keep in close contact because I will be in Texas this Christmas and I could definently make a stop by to see how everything is going and bring anything you need!! Keep up the strength! "Jesus said...'Do not fear, only believe.'" - Mark 5:36

Hi Jonas, I wanted to let you know that my daughter Victoria who is going to be a senior at LSHS this coming year is in robotics.  She loves being involved in such an neat group, I will tell her that you have an interest in robotics and we will keep you posted on the robot that will be built this year.  It is always very neat to see students build a robot that completes a certain task at competition.  Thinking of you today and praying for you to beat this!
