National Calls to Prayer

Throughout the centuries, America has had a rich history of participating in times of prayer. Oftentimes, prayer proclamations were issued by the governor of a colony or state, or by the president of the United States. In fact, by 1815, some 1,400 official calls to prayer had been issued by governmental leaders. These included calls for both Days of Prayer and Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving. On these days, citizens and congregations would gather together at churches at various locations, pastors would preach a sermon addressing the topics outlined in the proclamation, and then they would all pray. We have recently posted several of these sermons from WallBuilders' vast library collection, including:
A sermon by the Rev. Jeremy Belknap of Boston in response to President John Adams' 1798 national Fast Day proclamation.
A sermon by the Rev. Eliphalet Gillet of Hallowell, Maine, in response to President John Adams' 1799 national Fast Day proclamation.
A sermon by the Rev. David Tappan in response to a 1798 statewide Fast Day proclaimed by Massachusetts Governor Increase Sumner.
A sermon by the Rev. Henry Colman of Massachusetts in response to a proclamation issued by President James Madison during the War of 1812.
As we approach the National Day of Prayer, it is a time for all Americans to "Seek the Lord while He may be found, and call upon Him while He is near." (Isaiah 55:6). On Thursday May 2nd of this year, there will be literally tens of thousands of groups gathering together to pray corporately with their fellow Americans. To find these locations, you can visit the National Day of Prayer official site. If you are unable to attend one of these gatherings, please take time to individually lift up our nation, government, leaders, military, families, businesses, schools, and places of worship, fervently asking for God's grace, mercy, and blessing on the nation as we humble ourselves before Him.

[I]f My people who are called by My name will humble themselves,
and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,
then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
(2 Chronicles 7:14)

DEVOTION:   "Clothe yourselves, all of you,  with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.  Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you."  1 Peter 5:5b-6

Yesterday Jason Collins, an NBA player with the Washington Wizards, "came out" as being gay.  He is the first pro athlete to "come out" in any sport while still an active player.

Many have come out in favor of what Jason Collins said and did including the president.   Many are proud of him for doing so.  He is also very proud of himself.

Chris Brousard, a sports writer for ESPN, "came out" on the other side, the Biblical side, saying that homosexuality along with all other sexual sins, are outside of God's will.  He called homosexuality sin.  For that he is being ridiculed, yelled at, and called a bigot.

Here's the trouble.  We want to be thought of as good and right.  We want people to accept our lifestyles and to applaud us for what we do.  We want to be proud of ourselves.  We need it even to the point of denying and even despising the truth.  Our need for self esteem and our pride in ourselves causes us to seek and even to demand acceptance of our thoughts, words and deeds, which is just the opposite of what God wants.  He wants us to humble ourselves. He wants us to realize our failures and sins and submit to His will.  He wants us to put ourselves under His authority.

Homosexuality is sinful just like all sex that is outside the parameters of what God intended, which is one man and one woman who are committed in marriage to each other until death.  This is true whether you like it and agree with it or not.

The encouragement in the verse above come from God today.    If you humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, He will, at the proper time, exalt you.  He gives you His grace.

Don't be proud of yourself, because that pride will be your downfall.  Instead be proud of what Christ can do, is doing, and will do through and in you.  Be proud of His mercy and grace in your life.  Be proud of the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives through you.  Be proud of HIM!

Let us pray:  Lord God help me to be humble and to keep from foolish pride.  Help me instead ot be proud of you and to show that righteous pride in my life, in what I think, say, and do.  Amen.

I have been compiling a list of servicemen who are members of St John's so that we can pray for them.  Below is a list of them and where they are currently stationed.  Please note that their stationing changes quickly, so this may not even be up to date, but it is the last known whereabouts that I have of these guys.

Danny Dreyer-  Army- 2nd Lieutenant- graduating from Ranger school Today.

Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training

Ryan Woolf- Air Force- Airman 1st Class- Buckley Air Force Base, near Denver, CO

If there are more out there that I just don't know about, please let me know, and I will include him/her on the list.

Also, if you would like your family member or friend included in this list, please reply to this email with all the information!

Pray for these guys.  Some of these guys are in harm's way right now, others are training to put themselves in harm's way.  All of them have volunteered to serve and protect their country (which is you).
