Prayer request for the Sweets

Please pray for both Randy and Patty Sweet's mothers as they are both in failing health.  Virginia, Patty's mom, has just been diagnosed with lung cancer.  Rose, Randy's mom, had a bad seizure a month ago, and although she is walking and talking fine, the seizure caused some dementia.

Pray for patience and peace for Randy and Patty as they both care for their mothers.

DEVOTION:  Genesis 12:1-19  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Call of Abram

12 Now the Lord said[a] to Abram, "Go from your country[b] and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."[c]

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak[d] of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb.

I guess that when you hear the voice of God telling you to do something, you do it, right?  Abram had no choice.  If God speaks to you and says go to a new land.  You go.  You don't ask questions.  You go.  You don't try to argue with God.  You go.  Especially when there is a promise that God will greatly bless you, you go!

Well…… not so fast.  What about all those things God is telling you to do in His Word?  Sure, it's not an audible voice, but it is still God's voice calling to you from the pages of Scripture, telling you to believe in Him, calling you to actions of faith, commanding you to forgive those who sin against you, commanding you to make disciples of all nations.

We all could stand to listen to God more, to heed his voice as he calls us from his holy and living Word, and to surrender to His will.  Not a one of us is anywhere close to perfect in this way.

Neither was Abram.  We often think of his as this great pillar of faith, but on more than one occasion we see him question god, and do things that are directly against God's directives.  He wasn't perfect either.

Abram is a perfect example of God's patience, mercy, and grace toward us.  He continued to care for him and bless him even when his faith faltered.  He does the same with us.  We fail to act in faith, but God is still faithful.  Praise be to God!

Let us pray: Lord God, help me not only to hear what you say, but to listen to it.  Amen.
