Missouri District Luthean Youth Fellowship (LYF) Team

The Missouri District Lutheran Youth Fellowship (LYF) Team gives high school youth, who are members of LCMS churches in our District, the opportunity to grow in their service to the church and in their leadership in youth ministry. Each year, we bring four new young people on board as our seniors leave us to step into the future God has planned for them. These four new young people must currently be in their freshman year of high school. You are invited to nominate a young person from your congregation to serve in this important capacity. Opposites
Submitted by Jennifer Freudenburg, Project Manager for The Concordia Center for the Family Institute on the Ann Arbor Campus of Concordia University

Recently, as I entered a Target store, I began walking down the aisle passing the young girls section. I stopped dead in my tracks. I started laughing at what I was seeing. There were a number of racks of young girls swimming suits next to racks of snow suits.

Opposites – one set of clothing for very warm weather and one set of clothing for very cold weather – next to each other. I don't know if anyone else thought this was a little peculiar, but it stuck a cord with me.

My analogy? This depicts the emotional state of most pre-teen's. Their body is in flux, their emotions are spiraling up and down, and their value system is being challenged. Sometimes they feel opposites all at once. Do I wear a swim suit or a snow suit? Do I want to feel and act grown-up or do I just want to sit on Mom or Dad's lap and be cuddled? I want to stay calm, but I'm so upset and confused. Opposites!  Read more . . .
