DEVOTION:  The people of Judah were taken captive in Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.  1 Chronicles 9:1b

It is just a little verse, one that, like yesterday's verse, is tucked away in the middle of a bunch of lists and genealogies.  Yet it speaks volumes to the whole reason for a big chunk of the history of the O.T.  It wasn't random chance.  It wasn't because they just weren't powerful enough.  It wasn't even because of bad government or because they didn't give enough money to their armed forces.  It was simply because they were unfaithful to God.

Those who are looking with eyes of wisdom can see the same thing happening in our country.  So many in our country have been taken captive by idolatry.  I'm talking about idolatry of celebrities, money, power, and self.  We see it in every part of society, even in the church.   It is a plague that is, sooner or later, going to be the downfall of these very United States as it was for Israel.

But you don't have to have it be your downfall.  That is why God gave us the gift of repentance.  We are able, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to turn from our unfaithfulness and turn back to the Lord Jesus who gives us His mercy and love.  We are able to keep from falling all the way into unbelief and instead go the path of righteousness for Christ's name's sake.  We are able to believe and find comfort in the holy Christian church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the life everlasting!

Don't let unfaithfulness cause you to be taken captive.  Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is here and it is found in Jesus!

Prayer:  Heavenly Father keep me from unfaithfulness in whatever way you see best.  Amen.
