DEVOTION: (from Pastor)
(Note: I am going to try to write more of these myself so that I can communicate the Gospel to you more often.)

They brought young children to Jesus that He might touch them, but the disciples rebuked those who brought them.  But when Jesus saw it, he was greatly displeased and said to them, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.  Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will be no means enter it."  And he took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.   Mark 10:13-16

I was baptized when I was two weeks old at St. John's Lutheran Church in Young America, Minnesota.  I don't remember anything of that day.  What I do know is that my parents thought that my faith and my upbringing in Jesus were important enough to bring a two week old baby out in the cold February winter of Minnesota to church to have the water poured on my head and the words "I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." spoken so that I would be made God's child.

I also know that it was important enough to them that they made sure I was raised knowing Jesus.  I wasn't always as thankful as I should be for the parents that I have.  I treated them like dirt too many times to count.  I look back at my early life now, especially seeing how fortunate I was to have such wonderful, believing, and faithful parents, and I am so extremely grateful for who they were in my life.

Don't get me wrong, they weren't the "super" christians like the different characterizations you see being spoofed all the time, (like Flanders on the Simpsons).  We didn't have devotions every day at home.  We didn't have a little altar up in our house as I have heard that some families do.  No, ours was a regular household with two parents who worked way too hard and were very tired at the end of the day.  We were your regular busy family with all of the regular things that regular families do.

But my parents, like many of the parents in the Bible reading above, brought me to Jesus.  They brought me to Jesus at my baptism.  They brought me to Jesus in prayer with me and for me.  They brought me to Jesus by taking me to His house for worship on Sunday morning.  They brought me to Jesus by living in the love (and sometimes discipline) of Jesus every day.  They brought me to Jesus over and over again, and there is nothing for which I am more grateful. .

As parents and grandparents I want to encourage you to bring our kids to Jesus as much as you can.  Pray with them and for them!  Bring them to Jesus' house for worship.  Bring them Sunday school.  teach them all about Jesus through nighttime Bible stories.  Do devotions.  Do whatever you can do to bring your children to Jesus!  You won't be disappointed!!

DEVOTION:
(Jesus said) "He who comes to Me will never go hungry...." John 6:35b

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The salvation story of Jesus Christ reaches around the world. So that the readers of our Daily Devotion may see the power of the Savior on a global scale, we have asked the volunteers of our International Ministry Centers to write our Friday devotions. We pray that the Spirit may touch your day through their words.

In Christ, I remain, His servant and yours,
Kenneth R. Klaus
Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour

I've been told that in their private moments politicians admit that a leader can get away with doing many bad things if he is clever enough to make sure that none of his people go hungry. These leaders know the negative impact an empty stomach can make.

Truly, the desire to have a full belly is a mighty big motivator. Consider

* a hungry man will put his life on the line for food;

* a hungry man will lower himself beyond normal imagining just to get food;

* a hungry man does not consider his dignity important when he desperately scavenges through garbage to find something to eat.

Earthly hunger is a powerful motivator. Now, let me ask, are people equally hungry when it comes to God?

* Do they pursue their spiritual needs as powerfully and with the same degree of commitment as they do their physical needs?

* Are they ready to humble themselves before the Lord and ask Him to fill the emptiness in their souls?

* And are they ready to be led to the life-giving Bread from Heaven: Jesus, God's Son, our Savior?

In Scripture, Jesus extended an invitation to all of sinful humanity. He called upon them to come and be fed by Him. He encouraged them to be filled with Him who is the only One who can save their souls, change their tomorrows, and grant them peace and joy for the living of every day.

Because Jesus has done all this to feed our starving souls we pray ...

THE PRAYER: Lord, we thank You for being our eternal Bread of Life. This I pray in the Name of the crucified and ever-living Savior. Amen.

Biography of Author: Today's international devotion was written by our co-workers at the Lutheran Hour Ministries office in Lebanon. Beginning in 1950 LHM-Lebanon, known in-country as Middle East Lutheran Ministry (MELM), uses locally produced radio programming in Arabic that utilizes Bible studies, meditations with hymns, Bible readings, commentaries, and plays to share the Gospel with people in countries throughout the region. From its ministry center in Beirut, local Bedouin receive the message of God's love as well.

GENE HILGENDORF WILL BE ENDING HIS SERVICE TO ST. JOHN'S AT THE END OF THIS MONTH

St. John's organist and music director for the last seven years, Gene Hilgendorf, has decided to end his services to our congregation as of July 31.

We truly do appreciate his service and his time here at St. John's.  He has truly been a blessing in many different ways to many different people during his tenure at St. John's and for many years before in several different churches.

His professionalism and dedication to his craft have been tremendous.  He has put countless hours into working to make the music program at St. John's the best it could be.  The many weeknights and weekends working with individuals, with the adult choir, with the bell choir, and with the organ have all been outstanding and truly blessed by the Lord.   His knowledge of an organ and how it works is something that you just don't find in too many places anymore.

Most of all, it is his dedication to the Lord and doing things right and in good order to make sure the Lord is praised, that is going to be missed.

We wish him all of God's richest blessings as he goes into this new area time of his life.  We pray that he has a wonderful time spending more time with his family, especially his son in Omaha, and as he looks to serve the Lord in other ways in different churches in the area.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JEANNIE SIEBOLD ALSO RETIRING FROM PLAYING THE ORGAN

Because she and Gene have moved to Ofallon, and because Gene is dealing with esophogeal cancer and treatments for it, Jeannie Siebold has decided to hang up her organ shoes and to retire from it (at least for the time being).   We thank her for her many years of service to St. John's and for the blessing she has been to so many people in so many different ways, including leading the kids chime choir for several years, being a Stephen Minister, being chairwoman of Ladies Aid and serving n countless other ways.  May God bless her as she continues to serve the Lord in other ways, byt aking care of Gene, by loving on her kids,g randkids, and great-grandkids, and by just being the loving person she has always been.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ORGANIST NEEDED

Because both Jeannie and Gene are retiring at the same time, it leaves a huge hole in our worship.  While these holes will not be filled easily, we know that the Lord will take care of us!  For the time being, if anyone knows of an  organist who can fill in for the next few months (on a part time or full time basis) please call pastor at 359-1061!!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DONATED FOOD,  MONEY, AND TIME TO VBS!!!

a reminder during this heat wave from the Health Dept.

From:   Michael Daniels, Emergency Management Director

            Ruth Walters, Health Department Administrator

The Warren County Emergency Management Agency and Warren County Health Department are asking for your assistance in checking on your relatives, neighbors, and friends in these continuing high temperatures.  Perhaps your congregation could set up a phone tree to make contacts.

This isn't just for the elderly, folks with small children and those working out in the heat of the day should also be checked on.  Please remind them to drink plenty of water and try to avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day.  A quick visit might be appropriate too, to make sure they have their air conditioners on and set at a comfortable temperature.

Residents can go to the Warren County Senior Center until 3 pm, Monday – Friday.  Warrenton Manor is available until 5 pm, and the public library in Warrenton is open until 8 pm.  They may also go to local retail stores for a while to cool down.

Both agencies have information on our websites as well.  Go to www.warrencountyema.com, click on "Heat Wave" down the left side.  Go to www.warrencountyhealth.com for additional summer safety tips.

Thank you for your help in protecting the residents of Warren County and your communities.

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Galatians 1:3-5

This past week I was told how one political candidate for public office was asking people to make a financial gift to his campaign.

That's nothing new. Every four years we are all asked to back our favorite contenders. What was unique in this appeal is that the candidate encouraged people to skip the receiving of presents for things like birthday parties, confirmations, bar and bat mitzvahs, anniversaries, etc. "Instead of getting presents," he said, "why not ask people to take that money and give it to something which will have a lasting impact: my campaign."

It's an interesting idea.

Of course, if I wanted to give to something which would really have a long-term impact, I doubt if my cash would go to any political candidate. Candidates, programs and governments come and go. The person who is acclaimed by the masses one day is forgotten a few years later. As proof of that statement, I would ask you to name America's last 15 vice-presidents.

Do you want to give to something special -- something that will make a difference?

Then give to the cause of Christ. Give to your church or a mission program or to a Christian school or to .... The list could go on.

Give to the cause of Christ and watch the Holy Spirit take your dollars and move lost souls from hell to heaven, from damnation to salvation. It's a wondrous thing to be part of God's work.

And when it comes to long-term results? Well, what could possibly be better than going to heaven and standing before the Savior sandwiched between two souls who are there because you gave what you could?

Now before this devotion closes, I want you to know a few things I'm not trying to do. First, I'm not trying to endorse one candidate over another. Second, although I genuinely believe in Lutheran Hour Ministries' goal of bringing Christ to the nations, this is not a special fund-raising appeal.

No, this devotion is simply saying that Jesus showed us we were important by making the sacrifices necessary to save us. You and I will show what is important to us by doing the same.

So, let me ask this: what is the cause for which you are willing to sacrifice? ______________

You'll have to fill in the blank yourself.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for Your sacrifice may I give thanks. May I offer my thanks in thought, word and deed. In Your Name. Amen.

Answer: As a prophet Christ preached personally during his life on earth, validating his own miracles, especially His resurrection; and through the preached Gospel today he still proclaims Himself to be the Son of God and Redeemer of the word.  As a priest he fulfilled the Law perfectly in our stead (active obedience), sacrificed Himself for our sins (passive obedience), and still pleads for us with His heavenly Father (intercession).  As king he rules with His almighty power over all creation (the kingdom of power-- all creatures), governs and protects especially His church (the kingdom of grace-- the church on earth), and finally leads his church to glory in heaven.

Abreviated Daily News: VBS EXCITING NEWS

Last night was a total suprise from God!  We had double the amount of kids we normally have for VBS  around 120 all together!!  How exciting is that?

It did provide some challenges with food, crafts, scheduling, and staffing, but these are certainly wonderful challenges to have!

We could use some help the rest of the week to deal with all of the extra kids.  Extra helpers in the kitchen, with crafts, and with just herding kids from one station to another would be helpful.  Just show up around 4:30 to help!!!

Also monetary donations to offset the food costs and the cost of the water truck coming today at 1pm would also be appreciated.

Lastly, if anyone has a kiddie pool that they could donate by 12:30 TODAY, that would be awesome!!  Please just bring it to the pavillion at church.

God has sure been good to us and we want to "make the most of every opportunity"!!!

See you all tonight!!!

Pastor

Kitchen Help Tonight

Ann Panhorst was going to be the kitchen person tonight, but she fell ill yesterday morning and is still recovering.  She is hoping to be back up to ship shape by tomorrow, but is not able to be here tonight.

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
Jesus said) "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." John10:10

Seventeen-year-old Australian Shaun Wilson-Miller has died. The cause of death: the second heart which had been transplanted into him, had been rejected.

Before he died, Wilson-Miller said a number of things -- things which are pretty profound for a young man.

The first thing of note is that Wilson-Miller was realistic as to his future. In a video he commented, "I won't be here for as long as I thought." It is sad so many other folks don't come to a similar conclusion. Indeed, many live as if they will never die, as if they never needed a Savior.

Wilson-Miller also said, "This (life) has been an awesome ride, I have no regrets. Live life to the fullest because you never know what's going to happen."

Although Wilson-Miller said he had no regrets, later in the video he admitted to one sadness he had encountered. While in the hospital he fell in love with another heart patient. He said, "The hardest thing for me is leaving her, knowing that I won't get to marry her, to have kids together, to grow old together. That is what makes me sad.

As I said, pretty profound thoughts from a young man facing death.

Most of us would agree with Wilson-Miller ... this world can be a pretty awesome place. Every day the Lord surrounds us with opportunities and challenges, difficulties, decisions -- and His grace. Even more, He wants us to live that life to its fullest.

True, because of sin our lives will never have the perfection the Lord had originally established. But, with Jesus, we can have an abundant life.

Because of His life and death, we who acknowledge Him as Savior have forgiveness and eternity. Because of His ongoing presence and the blessings from the Holy Spirit, we know we are not alone. Because of His victory over the grave, we know that we too shall rise.

Yes, I like Shaun Wilson-Miller. He was right about many things and wrong in this: because of Jesus and the salvation He has given to us, His people know exactly what is going to happen.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, for having given Your Son's life so my life may be filled and overflowing, I am thankful. Now I pray for the others in the world who are not sure of today, tomorrow and eternity. May they be brought to know and believe in the Scriptural truth which says, "Because Jesus lives, we shall live also." In His Name. Amen.

DEVOTION: (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Mark 1:16-18

When Jesus passed by Simon, Andrew, and the other fishermen of Galilee, He called them and they went.

When Jesus passed by Matthew's tax collector's table, the Savior called the publican and he went.

These men found themselves blessed because they listened and responded to the Savior's summons. In the years which were before them, there must have been many times they gave thanks to the Lord that they had walked with and listened to the Savior.

Of course, we need to realize not all voices of authority can be trusted.

For example, take the case of Patricia Maione. Recently, Maione found herself in the sand trap of Whitinsville Golf Club in Northbridge, Massachusetts. Now that would be just fine if she had been playing golf. She wasn't. She was driving her car.

Maione says her GPS told her to make a left turn. She listened, made the left turn, drove through a cornfield and onto the golf course.

You see, it does make a difference what voice you select as your authority. Maione says she was wrong to trust her GPS. The police say she was wrong to think she could drink and drive. She was arrested for driving with a suspended license and fourth offense drunken driving.

Yes, it makes a difference to whom you listen. Some voices may be respected; some voices may carry wisdom and truth. But no voice can be trusted as thoroughly and completely as that of our Heavenly Father.

When He promises to send His Son to be the world's Savior, that promise is kept. And when that Son says He will be crucified and on the third day rise again, you can trust He has done all that is necessary to save your soul.

One-hundred percent confidence, one-hundred percent of the time -- that's the way we can listen to the Lord.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the world is filled with those who say much but are sure of little. Grant me the wisdom to separate falsehood from truth when I listen to them. Most of all, guide me to pay attention to You, who alone have -- and are -- the truth. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question:  Why was it necessary for Jesus to be true God?
Answer: Christ had to be true God in order that
a. His fulfilling of the Law, suffering, and death might be sufficient ransom for all people;
b. He might be able to overcome death and the devil for us.
