DEVOTION:  John 3:1-17English Standard Version (ESV)

You Must Be Born Again

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus[a] by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again[b] he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[c] Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You[d] must be born again.' The wind[e] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" 10 Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you[f] do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.[g] 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.[h]

For God So Loved the World

16 "For God so loved the world,[i] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

No one knows if Nicodemus actually wanted to know the truth or if he was trying to catch Jesus in his own words.  Needless to say, he got the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

What about you?  Are you seeking the truth, or just what you want to hear?  Do you want to hear the truth, that you are a sinner in need of a Savior, or do you just want a Jesus who is going to show you how to make yourself better?  Is Jesus just some sort of spiritual bank where you go to get your fill up so you can do what you want to, or is he the Lord and Savior of your whole life?

In Christ we are reborn each day through the faith that we received at our baptism and that remains with us.  We are reborn when we daily drown the old sinful nature through contrition and repentance and rise to newness of life through the good news that Jesus has saved us.  Then we go about our day living freely in His grace.  What a wonderful gift this is!

The Gospel isn't "Jesus died for you, now go and do this and that and serve him and make your life better, and make sure you stay away from this, and……."

No!  The Gospel is "God so loved you, that He sent His Son to die for you, that you may believe in Him and have eternal life."  PERIOD.  End of sentence!  That's the Gospel.  Live freely and fully in it!  Do whatever God gives you to do today in joy and love!  Let go of all the bitterness, anger, jealousy, selfish ambition, materialism, etc. and BELIEVE IN JESUS!

Prayer: Lord, help me to get rid of all my sin by placing it at your feet and trusting in You alone.  Amen.
