prayer request from Sandy Robine

In thinking about June coming up which is traditionally the "wedding month", I ask for prayers for marriages everywhere that they stay strong and that ways are found, for people to look at themselves and try to give 100% to their marriages and their spouses to work through even the worst of situations. We need to look at ourselves and ask God to help us be a blessing to our spouses.  The old "be kind to one another" applies to our marriages most of all.

I just know there are many, all over, that need prayers at this time.

"A New Lease"

May 30, 2013

If a man dies, shall he live again? ... Job 14:14a ~ Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? ..." John 3:4a

The questions of both Job and Nicodemus are probably rhetorical; that is, they didn't really expect to receive an answer.

They didn't expect an answer because the answer to both questions is obvious: if you're dead, you're not going to live again -- at least not in this world. If you're old, it's impossible for you to be physically reborn.

Even so, 34-year-old Brighton Dama Zanthe of Gweru, Zimbabwe, may not think those questions are all that rhetorical. Let me share a bit of his story. Zanthe had been sick for a long time. Eventually, the time came when he "shuffled off this mortal coil." The coroner was called, and he was declared dead.

His mourning family made the necessary funeral arrangements.

Zanthe's funeral was all perfectly normal, until some of the folks at the service noticed his legs were still twitching. The funeral was instantly stopped, and Zanthe was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where a skilled medical team, not surprisingly, overturned the coroner's report.

In an interview with the local papers, Zanthe claims he can only remember being sick at home and then waking up in the hospital. Regretfully, he doesn't recall any of the fine and complimentary things the people said at his funeral.

Looking back at what has happened, Zanthe says, "I was given another chance, and now I am alive."

Now I have to confess, Zanthe wasn't totally and completely dead as Job talked about ... and he really wasn't born again the way Nicodemus meant. Still, Zanthe's "almost death" and "almost re-birth" is just about as close to a second lease on life as any of us are likely to get.

Although the article doesn't say so, I would imagine Zanthe will be seeing and living his life in a different way. By that I mean some of the things that once seemed important are now inconsequential, and that which was insignificant is now of prime importance.

It's a shame it often takes an emergency, a tragedy, or a death before our priorities get reordered. I pray that is not the case for you and that your loyalty is first and foremost to the Savior, whose life was given so you might have life.

On the other hand, if you have a few items which might need to be tweaked, the story of Zanthe's almost death and almost rebirth might just give you the inspiration you need.

In other words, Brighton's second chance might be yours as well.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in gratitude to my Savior, today's prayer asks that You will create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. In the Savior's Name. Amen.

"Razor Sharp"

May 29, 2013

For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and the intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-13

In my office there hangs a great broadsword.

Made by my father, this sword was his only foray into the forging of ancient weaponry. The project, which, on and off, took him over a year, was a labor of love. Heating, pounding, pulling -- he shaped that thing and put an edge on it. A good, healthy swing will cut through a 2 x 4.

But the sword in my office is probably a lot heavier than the sword referred to in the passage above. The author of Hebrews 4 is talking about a weapon that pierces and cuts with surgical precision, not a sword which hacks and chops.

Unfortunately, there are more than a few people who hack and chop with their Bibles. One of those people is Evelyn Mills Moore of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Am I being overly judgmental? I don't think so. You see, Moore used her Bible to beat the tar out of another woman. That's right. She used her Bible as a weapon, which left bruises and abrasions on the other lady. Indeed, the beating was so bad Moore was arrested, and her bail was set at $105,000.

Now I'm sure none of the tens of thousands of you who will be reading this devotion would ever do such a thing.

You know better.

Even so, over the years I have seen Christians use various Bible passages to berate, belittle and abuse others. I've seen passages taken out of context and applied to people and situations where they just didn't belong.

Even worse, I've seen the Law being applied to sinners who already had hearts that were filled with sorrow, and words of Gospel comfort being extended to those who felt perfectly fine and at peace with their misdeeds.

The text is clear: the Lord's Scripture is designed to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. If that heart is filled with all manner of evil and wrongdoing, the Law of God can be applied to bring that sinner to repentance and confession.

But when the Word discerns a heart is well and truly sorrowful, the Gospel must be administered to provide the peace, forgiveness and comfort that was won for us by the Savior through His life, His suffering, His sacrifice, His death, and His third-day resurrection from the dead.

When that happens to us we should be glad, for we know, washed in the blood of the Lamb, we shall be fearless when we stand before the Lord before "whom we must give account."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, keep me from misuse of Your Word. Let it accuse me when I am guilty and forgive me because I am a repentant servant of the Savior. Then, I pray, may it guide me, so my sin and guilt is less frequent. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.
