DEVOTION:  Romans 15:4-13  (ESV)

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

"Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
    and sing to your name."

10 And again it is said,

"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."

11 And again,

"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
    and let all the peoples extol him."

12 And again Isaiah says,

"The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
in him will the Gentiles hope."

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

What a positive message this morning.  You want endurance?  Ask the God of endurance!  You want hope? Ask the God of hope!  You want joy?  Ask the God of joy!

Why do we search for these things outside of the realm of God?  Why do we fight, and scrtach, and claw, and worry, when all the time, God tells us to come to him for rest and present ourr equests to him, and go, go, go to Him?

It my prayer for you that, whatever you are dealing with, you GO TO GOD with it.  Presnet it to Him and then have your ears open to His Word to hear what he has to say to you!.  He will tell you to face your sin head on and repent!  He will tell you to go and be reconciled.  He will tell yout o love your neighbor as He loves you!  And so much more!

Let us pray:  Thank you for the encouragement, love grace, mercy, peace, and joy you have given me today God!  GIve me more!  Amen.

DEVOTION: Isaiah 11:1-10 (ESV)

"The Righteous Reign of the Branch"

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

10 In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

How we judge people and how Christ judges them are two different things.  We judge by what we see and hear.  Christ judges by what he knows is in the heart.  We judge in selfishness, bitterness, anger, and too often without forgiveness.  He judges in righteousness for everyone whether they believe in him or not, and in complete and total forgiveness for those who trust in him.

It is a most wonderful thing to realize that our Lord Jesus doesn't just judge by what he sees and hears, because if he did we would all be lost and condemned forever.  Our actions, thoughts, and words convict us daily.  Instead of judging us as our sins deserve, he looks into the heart, and for those who have been baptized, for those who believe in the salvation that he has won, he sees himself.  He sees a pure and perfect saint who has been washed cleaned and who is continually forgiven.

On the day Christ returns all that Isaiah proclaimed in these verses will happen.  Until that day, know that you've already been judged and been found not guilty by virtue of the judge who is also your Lord and Savior.  Have peace in him today!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, bless us more and more with the sure knowledge that you judge according to your own righteousness and that we have been redeemed by your precious blood.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 72:1-7 (ESV)

"Give the King Your Justice"  Of Solomon.

72 Give the king your justice, O God,
    and your righteousness to the royal son!
May he judge your people with righteousness,
    and your poor with justice!
Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,
    and the hills, in righteousness!
May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
    give deliverance to the children of the needy,
    and crush the oppressor!

May they fear you[a] while the sun endures,
    and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!
May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
    like showers that water the earth!
In his days may the righteous flourish,
    and peace abound, till the moon be no more!

Solomon was a very wise man, not because he was born that way, or because of his accomplishments or his experience, but because he asked the Lord for wisdom and the Lord graciously gave it to him.

In this Psalm of Solomon we see him asking for justice and righteousness, not for himself, so he can be the greatest leader ever and have renown and glory throughout the earth, but so he could lead God's people with justice, care for the poor, and crush the oppressor.

Let this be a lesson to you.  If you want wisdom and understanding, if you want to do things the right way, then you have to ask God for the power, ability, strength, and knowledge to do so.

And then you have to sit back and LISTEN to what the Lord says in His Word. You can't just think harder, or work harder.  You need to listen, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest all of God's Word to truly get the wisdom and Godly living you desire.

If you want to live your own way, go ahead, but just know and understand that it won't be a blessed or satisfying life.

Solomon, for all his faults, and he had many, was given wisdom to govern and live to be the greatest King Israel ever knew.  We still have three of his books (Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and some of the Psalms) as testimony to the wisdom God gave him.

If you want your legacy to be one of wisdom, righteousness, love, mercy, and grace.  Ask God and He will give it to you graciously through His Word and His Sacraments within the fellowship of His saints.

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for giving us the wisdom we need to live this life in you.  Help us to listen to you so our whole lives can be filled with your wisdom and free from sin.  Amen.
