DEVOTION Philippians 3:4-11  English Standard Version (ESV)

If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law,[a] blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Yes, being a Christian means losing.  It means losing your whole self worth and finding worth in Christ.  It means no longer boasting in who you are but boasting in who Christ is.  It might mean losing a job.  It might mean losing friends.  It might mean losing your life.

Consider the Apostle Paul.  He was the man.  He had everything going for him.  He was highly respected in his Jewish community.  He was rich.  He was powerful.  He was everything he wanted to be.  Then Jesus came.  Jesus blinded him, sent him to Damascus where he would be baptized by Ananias, and turned his whole life upside down.  He couldn't go back to his friends.  They wouldn't just think he was weird for becoming one of those Christians.  They would want to kill him.  Literally.

He gave up his home, his family, his property, his power.  He lost everything for the sake of Christ.

Now, I am not saying that you'll have to give up everything for Jesus, but there might be some things that are really getting in the way of your relationship with him.  Maybe it's a job that requires you to miss worship too much.  Maybe it's an overabundance of money that is causing you to trust in it more than Jesus. Maybe it's a friend who is bringing you down and away from Jesus.  Maybe you are messing with some stuff, drugs, alcohol, the occult, sex, etc. and it is tearing you away from Jesus.

Whatever the case, know that when you lose those things to turn in repentance and faith to Christ, you gain so much more!  You gain Christ!  You gain salvation!  You gain that peace that passes all understanding.  You gain eternal life with Jesus and the whole community of saints!  You gain everything!

So lose what you need to lose so you may gain a better relationship with Christ!

Prayer: Help me to lose everything that's getting in the way of my relationship with you so that I may know that peace that passes all understanding more and more.  Amen.

A NOTE FROM THE LITTLE LAMBS TEACHERS ABOUT THE PRESCHOOL ROOM

If you use the preschool area, make sure you put everything back just like you found it.  If you have little kids down there, take note of where everything is and make sure it gets put back.  It was not left the way it should be, and the teachers were not happy.

They are happy to let you use it, as long as you respect it and put things back where they go.
