DEVOTION:  Psalm 23English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.[a]
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness[b]
    for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord
    forever.[g]

This is probably the most  famous of all the Psalms.  It is indeed wonderful poetry by David at a time in his life when nothing was going right.  Notice, once again, the emphasis on the Lord.  Everything is about him and his goodness.

                This Psalm is usually one that I read at funerals.  I'll probably read it at Cal Tameler's funeral later on this week.  It's a good one when we are mourning and depressed, because it gets the emphasis off our loss or our problems and on to the Lord who is the source of all goodness and the one real answer to our mourning and pain.

                When we read this Psalm we can almost picture David remembering a simpler time in his life when he was just a shepherd and the beautiful scenery he got to see and experience.  It's the scene of many vacations, green pastures and still waters, a feast, and rest.

                While you may not always get to experience that rest here on earth, you will get to experience it in the eternal life you will spend with Jesus and all the saints!  Imagine dipping your feet in the cleanest coolest water ever.  Imagine a feast with Jesus!  Imagine the real rest that always seems to escape you here on earth.  Imagine eternity with your loving Lord and Savior!

                In the midst of your busy and maybe even mournful Monday, remember this Psalm and know that the Lord is with you, that you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my shepherd and leading me all the way to eternal life with you.  Amen.

NEWS:

THE ELDERS WANT YOUR HELP!

The idea of consolidating our Sunday worship services has been brought up at several council meetings and in many other conversations recently and so at our elders meeting yesterday we discussed the possibility of consolidating our two Sunday worship services into one.

Here's what a schedule would look like.

8:15-9:15- Adult Bible class

9:30-10-30- Worship

10:45-11:45- Sunday school, another adult Bible study led by a member, Confirmation class

Here are the reasons for this idea:

  1. It would help all the worship workers- acolytes, readers, counters, choir, pianists, organists, elders, etc. as they are getting spread thin.
  2. Our church would be more unified as we would be worshiping together every Sunday
  3. We'd have more time for Bible class and Sunday school
  4. We'd help out confirmation kids and families if we were able to have class on Sunday
  5. A fuller worship service means more of everything and just a more worshipful atmosphere.

The Saturday worship service would stay the same.

The elders want to know what you think?  Is this a good idea or bad idea?  Any other suggestions?
