DEVOTION:  Romans 12:9-21  English Standard Version (ESV)

Marks of the True Christian

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit,[a]serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.[b] Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it[c] to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."20 To the contrary, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

One of my favorite verses, that I discovered about six years ago, when I was going through a very difficult time, is verse 18.  Read it again.  It can also read, "If possible, as much as it depends on you, be at peace with everyone."

This gave me a ton of peace, because sometimes it doesn't depend on me.  Sometimes it depends on the other person, and that other person doesn't want to live at peace with me.  It gives me peace, because even though I'd like to be able to do what they're supposed to do, which is forgive me for my mistakes and be reconciled to me,  sometimes they just won't do it.  It's no longer on my shoulders.  I can rest in God's grace.

Unfortunately, as long as the earth remains fallen and sinful, there will be people who refuse to be reconciled, there will be people who would rather hold a grudge than let it go, and there will be people who will continue to judge and condemn you for what you've done or said, long after the Lord has forgiven you.

I have these things to say to all of you who may be reading this and may need reconciliation with me for whatever reason, I LOVE YOU!  I FORGIVE YOU!  PLEASE FORGIVE ME! Let's live together in this fallen world as brothers and sisters in Christ.

To those who need to be reconciled to someone else, GO DO IT!  Go along with the Holy Spirit and ask for forgiveness, be forgiven, leave the past in the past, and move forward in peace and joy!

Prayer: Lord, help me to get up the guts to do whatever it takes to live at peace with everyone, and when it is not possible, help me to learn to live on your ultimate and total grace.  Amen.
