DEVOTION:  Isaiah 50:4-9  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord God has given me
    the tongue of those who are taught,
that I may know how to sustain with a word
    him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
    he awakens my ear
    to hear as those who are taught.
The Lord God has opened my ear,
    and I was not rebellious;
    I turned not backward.
I gave my back to those who strike,
    and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;
I hid not my face
    from disgrace and spitting.

But the Lord God helps me;
    therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like a flint,
    and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
    He who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
    Let us stand up together.
Who is my adversary?
    Let him come near to me.
Behold, the Lord God helps me;
    who will declare me guilty?

This is an interesting take on faith.  Isaiah, who was a common man, was given an extraordinary blessing.  He was given the gift of prophecy.  He was given words from the Lord, and he spoke those words to the people of Judah.

It wasn't something that he would have chosen for himself.  It is something that he was given to do.  Not only that, he was given the wisdom, authority and power to do it.  None of it came from himself.  It all came from God.

The same holds true for us.  Whether we be called by God to be prophets, pastors, teachers, encouragers, laborers,  or anything else, all the power and authority to do it in His name comes from God alone.  It all comes from God!

You may not think that you have the ability or the responsibility to share the Gospel or to teach the faith, but every child of God regardless of age, intellect, or status has the ability to proclaim the good news.  Every Christian, by virtue of the Holy Spirit living in him or her, has that power, authority, and privilege!

You may have been neglecting it or running away from it like Jonah did, but if you do you are missing your reason for existence and until you start proclaiming God's goodness and grace and living it in your life, your life is going to feel unsatisfying and empty.  No amount of climbing the ladder of success, money, or stuff is going to give you the satisfaction and peace that sharing the Gospel can give.  Get to it!  Be satisfied and content with Christ who gives you strength.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me your work to do.  Make me do it to the best of my ability and the glory of You.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ

Who was Doeg?

An answer from Pat King right before she went into surgery yesterday morning:

Contrary to popular belief, this is NOT the Biblical spelling for dog. No, trust me on this. It's not.

He was an Edomite (which is not a subset of the termite family) who worked as the chief herdsman for Saul. So what, you say. Well, what makes him bad, is that he is responsible for the deaths of a bunch of priests. You can read all about him in 1 Sam 21 and 22.

Oh! And he was also a sleaze-bag bounty hunter on A&E.

Don Nolte also answered it with a regular answer:  Doeg was the chief herdsman for Saul.
