DEVOTION: Colossians 1:13-20 (ESV)

13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by[a] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Count how many times Paul uses the words "He is" "by Him", "through Him" or "in Him'.  I counted eight.

In a world that's all about me, I, and the individual, isn't it good to hear Paul focus on someone other than himself?  If you were to read through all thirteen of Paul's Epistles, you would see that he never talks about his own rights, or his own goodness.  He never brags about himself or complains about how things are going wrong.  In fact, he tells us over and over again to rejoice and have joy in our suffering.

Throughout all thirteen of Paul's Epistles the focus is on CHRIST.  It needs to be that way for us also!  When we get focused on ourselves we either get disappointed, distressed, and full of guilt, or we get full of ourselves, self righteous, and self centered.

This passage is a clear reminder that Christ is all in all, that He is the one from all blessings flow, that He is the one who was perfect for us, that He is the one who loved us so much that he literally suffered death and hell for us.  Spend your energy and your time thinking about that today and you will have a sense of relief and a peace that passes all understanding.  Let the Holy Spirit work through you and in you to bring about what He wants in you.

Prayer: Lord, straighten me out and get my priorities in the right order.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  QUIZ:

What does the name "Jesus" mean?

(Well, at least  one person reads this.  Thanks Pat King!  It would really lift my spirits and make me feel better if I knew that there was more than just Pat King reading it though.)

Well, I read it. Just figured it was so easy I'd let someone else answer for a change. Anyway, like the name "Joshua" in the Old Testament, it means Savior. BTW, the Aramaic name Yeshua (ישוע) means "salvation." And Yehoshua – which when translated into English via the Greek Iesous – means "Yahweh is salvation."
And there you have it.
