DEVOTION:  Matthew 5:1-12English Standard Version (ESV)

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

"The Beatitudes"

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God.

10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What does it mean to be blessed?  Some may say the Cubs were blessed to win the World Series last night, which means to them that God gave them the ability to win and in essence made them win or at the least made it favorable for them to win.  They might even say that he sent the rain to cause the rain delay.

Still others might say that certain people are blessed more than others, that they have more stuff, are better looking, more healthy, more friends, better parents, etc.

The trouble with these ways of thinking and many like it, is that is not what God says in the Scriptures.  What he says is just the opposite.  Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst, etc.

In essence, he is saying that "blessed are those who have the attitude of Christ."  or even better "blessed are those who are Christians."

You don't need to be the biggest and the best to be successful in God's eyes.  You need to be broken, contrite, humble, and faithful.  That is success in God's eyes.  That is what he sees when he sees a Christian.  That is what he will bless.

Let us pray:  Lord, we are blessed because we believe in you.  Keep on blessing us with faith, life, and truth.  Amen.
