DEVOTION: Leviticus 18:1-5 and 19:9-18

18 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the Lord your God. You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. You shall follow my rules[a] and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.

Leviticus 19:9-18
"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. 10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.
11 "You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
13 "You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. 14 You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
15 "You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life[of your neighbor: I am the Lord.
17 "You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Jesus said that all the law can be summed up in that last verse you just read, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."    If we just did that..... can you imagine what the world would look like?  Can you imagine what your own relationships would look like?  Can you imagine how your life would be different if YOU did that, if you loved your neighbor as yourself.

Unfortunately, none of us have kept this law as we should.  We are sinful human beings, living in a sinful world, among other sinful people.  Yet, because we have been washed and cleansed of our sin, we have the ability to live a new life.  We have the Holy Spirit living in us, and because of that, we are able, by the Holy Spirit's power and urging, to love our neighbor as ourselves.

So... living this new life... how do we go about loving the way Christ wants us to?  Well, he very plainly tells us and even commands us how.  He says, "Give to anyone as he has need".  He says, "Go and make disciples".  He says, "If you forgive anyone their sins, they are forgiven them."   These are the ways to "love your neighbor as yourself".  Or if you want further instruction, just read the passage above over again.  All these you are able to do by the power of the Holy Spirit living in you.

At the same time, you still have that sinful nature warring against the Spirit, and so there will be times, every day, that you will fail at loving.  That's why Christ died and why Christ continues to give you His forgiveness through the Word and the Sacraments.  Trust in that today.  Know that your sins are forgiven, and live by the Spirit!

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for cleansing us from all our failures.  Help us to live by Your Spirit so that we can love youand our neighbor.  Amen.
