DEVOTION: Psalm 85

85 Lord, you were favorable to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
    you turned from your hot anger.

Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward us!
Will you be angry with us forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive us again,
    that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
    but let them not turn back to folly.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
    that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
    righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
    and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good,
    and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him
    and make his footsteps a way.

As I'm getting ready for David Kohrs' funeral this morning, this passage couldn't be more fitting!  "Righteousness and peace kiss each other", describes very fittingly what we experience at a funeral.  Christ's righteousness and our peace come together as we lay to rest a loved one, because we remember that Christ covered over David with the robe of Christ's righteousness!  We remember that even though David has died yet does he live!  Even though his skin has been destroyed, he still sees God face to face!  There is no better place to see steadfast love and faithfulness!  It shows itself fully at the burial of one who was loved and forgiven by Christ!

What a wonderful scene David enjoys today.   Perfect peace!  Perfect righteousness!  No more sorrow!  No more pain!  Only PEACE!  Only JOY!  Only JESUS!

If you're having a particularly bad day, or you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, read this Psalm over and over again.  Pray it out loud to God.  Let it sink in!  The Word of God has deep and meaningful power for you, and this chapter especially, has power to bring you to your knees in adoration and praise for all that God has done!

Rejoice today that He ahs shown us His steadfast love and his righteousness and that He has given it all to us!

Prayer:  Lord, even in the midst of sorrow and grief you lift us up and give us peace.  Do so today!  Amen.
