DEVOTION: When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.  The Story, p. 299

Everyone has enemies.  Ok, maybe not enemies, but at least people who don't particularly care for you.  Even if you are the nicest person in the world, even if your sole goal in life is to make everyone around you happy, there will be someone who doesn't like you as much as you would like.

Should that make you want to quit?  Should that upset you?  As much as you try to do God's will, and please everyone around you, because of the sinful nature of human beings, and because you, yourself, are sinful, there is never going to be perfect peace on earth.  There is always going to be someone fighting.  There is always going to be someone trying to get more out of you, from you, or in spite of you.  There's always going to be someone who doesn't like you very much.  I, myself, have found that out the hard way on too many occasions.

So what do you do?  You keep building!  You keep doing God's will!  You keep putting one foot in front of the other, and you keep working hard to build God's kingdom!

The Jews were facing insurmountable odds, but they had one very important thing going for them.  They had the Lord God on their side.  It was His temple and His city they were building, and with His help they couldn't lose.  Even though it looked and seemed like they weren't going to be able to do it, God gave them the courage, strength, will and ability to do it!  They built the walls around Jerusalem in just 52 days, a miraculous feat by any stretch of the imagination.

I have learned to say to myself, when faced with people who are against me or who just don't like me for whatever reason, "Not everyone liked Jesus.  People hated him enough to want to kill him.  Why should I ever expect everyone to like me?"

So keep on building God's kingdom!  Keep on doing His work.  Keep on living your life to HIS glory and not to please man!  In the end you will be blessed!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me not to worry so much about pleasing people.  Instead help me to please you with how I live and with what I say and do!  Amen.

JUST A NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO ATTEND WORSHIP

Always remember and never forget what you RECEIVE in WORSHIP!  You get to hear words directly from God.  You get to have fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ, and those who are confirmed get to receive Christ's body and blood for the forgiveness of their sins.  Everyone gets to publicly confess their sinfulness and hear the DIRECT words of forgiveness of Christ through the pastor.

There is nothing more important in the life of a Christian on Sunday morning than worship!

So far this Summer our worship attendance has been awful.  It is understandable if you are out of town, but if you are in town there is NO EXCUSE.  Just because it is Summer vacation from school and other things doesn't mean it should be Summer vacation from worship!

God never takes a break from you and you shouldn't take a break from Him and His gifts either.  His gifts of His Word and His Sacraments are of utmost importance in your life and your family's life.  Please make every effort to be in worship for your own sake and for the sake of your brothers and sisters in Christ!

Make plans to be in worship this Saturday night or Sunday morning especially as we induct Kelsey Overbeck!
