Today Jonas spent the day at CM and had the final two tests (lumbar puncture and bone aspiration) that will complete the picture of exactly where we stand. Even before those results are all in, we have had consultation with our doctors. He has no new lesions, but the standard course of treatment has not done much for beating his current cancer back.

Last Friday we met with our assigned doctor from the POETIC department at Children's Mercy. POETIC stands for Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutics. They will take over Jonas's cancer treatment from our primary oncologist at this point as we switch over to a clinical trial/experimental treatment. The clinical trial they have recommended (and that we have agreed to) for Jonas is a 21 day chemotherapy regimen (with an experimental drug) that can be repeated and repeated if it appears to show promise. Unfortunately, our doctor tells us, this will not be a CURE for his cancer. It will most likely just buy him some time. Jonas has an aggressive form of Ewings. The earlier Ewings returns to a patient in under 24 month's time, the more difficult it is to stop. -Jonas's cancer came back after just nine months.

Needless to say, the past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster for our family. We have been researching and reading, pouring over medical trials and natural cures, pulling out our hair and mulling over our options. Too many options. But we have to get this right. Now is a very critical time in the progression of his cancer. So..... we put ourselves in the hands of our medical professionals with their wisdom and experience, hoping that this is the right choice.

Jonas will begin his clinical trial next Tuesday.
I have people to thank and other news to share, but I have to get some sleep. We're all emotionally drained. I will post again soon.

One other note. We are a self-employed family. And summer is our slow season since everyone is outside doing physical activity - it's not typically when people buy exercise equipment. My heart goes out to my husband who can't stand the idea of not spending every minute of the next year with his son...just because he is stuck breaking his neck to make ends meet.

Kristen so sorry you all had to hear that news this past week. I'm sure it's exhausting and difficult to know what to do with the overwhelming amount of information out there. We will be thinking about you all as Jonas starts the clinical trial next week, and praying he tolerates the treatment without too many side effects.

DEVOTION:  He has showed you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.  Micah 6:8
 
What does God really want?  Does he want your empty sacrifices or offerings?  Does he want your empty praise and worship?  NO!  Does He want you to tell Him what is right and wrong?  Certainly not!  Does He want you to live the way you want to or the way He wants you to?  I would venture to say, with all certainty, that He wants you to live HIS way. 
 
That is exactly what it means when it says that the Lord requires you to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.  It means that His will comes first in any and EVERY circumstance.  It means that HIS WORD, what HE SAYS, is the AUTHORITY and is above everything else!  YOU HAVE NO AUTHORITY OVER YOUR OWN LIFE!  THE LORD DOES!
 
Yesterday was a troublesome day for those who hold to what the Bible says about sexuality in all forms.  Scripture says that all sex, homosexual or heterosexual, that is outside of a God instituted marriage is sinful.  IT IS ADULTERY!!  And what is a God instituted marriage?  Read this" For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh." 
 
This doesn't mean that we "hate" the sinner.  It doesn't mean that we "condemn" the sinner.  God is the ultimate judge of the heart.  If we were to do condemn to hell, the same judgment we speak on them would be upon us, for we are all sinners.  No, we hate the sin but love the sinner with Christ's love, just like Jesus did over and over again with Zaccheus, with the woman at the well, with the adulteress who was going to be stoned, with David, Abraham, Moses etc.  We love the sinner just like Christ loves us!
 
SO where do we go from here?  Well, what does the Scripture above say?  "Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God."  Sin needs to be treated as such.  It must always be condemned.  Whether it be a sin against the sixth commandment or the first commandment or the tenth commandment or any other, it must never be condoned or accepted as right.  That holds true for our own lives as well!  We must first take the plank out of our own eye and then we will see clearly to take the speck out of our brother's eye. 
 
Let us all begin and continue to speak the truth in love so that those who need to hear the truth will hear it fully, repent of their sin, and turn to Christ for salvation. 
 
Let us pray:  Lord God help us to act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with You and speak Your truth into the hearts and lives of everyone.  Amen.

  22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 

Parents do you see a quality you would like your child(ren) to have more of. Come join us for some fun lessons, games, and snacks.

We will meet in the preschool room the whole time.

Also I will take any big kid helpers who want to show up too!!!

For JEANETTE KOEHLER as she has decided to refuse dialysis and was placed on hospice care yesterday.

 

For NANCY SPINIOLAS who will be having a electro impulse stimulator implanted in her back today and who is also awaiting thyroid biopsy results.

 

For JANICE MCKENZIE as she is recovering from sever back problems and a hospitalization because of it.

 

For BILL MCKENZIE as he recovers from pneumonia.

 

For RUTH WALTERS who is recovering from knee replacement surgery at home.

 

For CIERRA FIGURA as her fever has finally broke and she is back to her old self.

 

For PAUL TOEDEBUSCH who is recovering from bladder surgery due to cancer.  

 

For OUR YOUTH AND ADULT LEADERS as 22 OF US go to San Antonio for the National Youth Gathering on Sunday morning.

 

For OUR LWML Lutheran Women's Missionary League in the LCMS (Ladies Aid) as they meet in convention this week, and for safe travels for Coleen Bottorff as she travels to and from the convention.

 

For BONNIE FRENZIA who is recovering from knee surgery and is doing well.

 

For JESSE ULERY as he is suffering from a very painful muscle strain.

For RICK SPINIOLAS who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and continues to go through treatments. .

For DOMINIC GENTILE, a friend to many at church and in the community, who is suffering with brain cancer and is recovering from surgery.

For JONAS BORCHERT, grandson of Don Nolte, and Pat King's cousin on your prayers today as well. .   

 

PRAYERS FOR OUR SERVICEMEN

I have been compiling a list of servicemen who are members of St John's so that we can pray for them.  Below is a list of them and where they are currently stationed.  Please note that their stationing changes quickly, so this may not even be up to date, but it is the last known whereabouts that I have of these guys. 
 
Danny Dreyer-  Army- 2nd Lieutenant- Ranger, GERMANY
 
Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training
 
David Mincemeyer- Army- Army Specialist- Ft. Carson, CO
 
Jon Rahn- Navy- Hawaii, not sure of his rank at this time
 
David Tate- Air Force- 2nd Lieutenant- Jacksonville, Florida
 
Alex Walters- Navy- E4- Guam
 
Ryan Woolf- Air Force- Airman 1st Class- Buckley Air Force Base, near Denver, CO
 
 
If there are more out there that I just don't know about, please let me know, and I will include him/her on the list.
 
Also, if you would like your family member or friend included in this list, please reply to this email with all the information!
