Jonas's Updates

Jonas handled this past six days in the hospital reatively effortlessly. He is so on top of his procedure and medications now that he is almost able to pre-emp the vomiting and pain by requesting what he needs before he needs it. The poking, proding, poisoning, beeping, and monitoring is still detestable, but manageable. Distraction plays a good part in there, too. He spent lots of time playing his bass, playing Draw It with friends on the internet (thank you Vicki White for turning him on to that = ), reading more of his Artemis Fowl series (thank you Arlene), pouring over and over his flight book (thank you Matt Minx) and visiting with friends (thank you Susan, Linda, and Dylan. Becky we missed you but thank for coming all the way down to the hospital, and for the goodies!).
The most memorable part of his stay this time was a special visit he got from Lt. Derek Johnson, a chinook pilot and part of the transport team that flew the infamous Seal Team 6. He came to the hospital to bring Jonas a special gift. Derek was stationed in Afghanistan when Jonas was diagnosed with cancer last summer. Jonas was on a baseball team with Derek's nephew, Dylan Pappas, who told him by phone about Jonas's situation as it unfolded. Derek made a large Get Well banner for Jonas right there in Afghanistan and thirty or so men signed it. About a dozen of them posed with it in front of the chopper that was to bring the men home. It is beautiful, with warm wishes of encouragement from some of the most courageous, dedicated, and giving men on the planet. Some of you may remember - because several of that group were from the Kansas City area- that this chopper was hit by an IED in the air, taking out one of the roters and killing all the men on the chopper, including several of the Navy Seals. Derek was not on that flight because he was staying behind for surgery and had kept the banner to travel home with him so that he could hand-deliver it to Jonas. You can read more about the men who went down in the crash at this link:

As Jonas ran his hands across the signatures and emblems it was very sobering to hear that 70% of the men who were reaching out to comfort and encourage Jonas had lost their lives in service to protect us all. We will never forget their courageous mission and their generosity of spirit. Thank you Lt. Johnson for your service to our country and for bringing Jonas such a memorable momento. This is a treasure for him which we are having framed and hung in his room. There are not enough words to describe our respect and admiration. Thank you so much.
