St. John's Group Email update on Jerry Pezold

Just wanted to let everyone know that Jerry did make it home late Monday afternoon and seems to be recovering well.

DEVOTION: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8

Do you ever get amazed at the things people will do to see their names appear in the Guinness World Record Book?

I do, but this is one record I didn't mind. Maybe you agree. Let me see how long it takes before you can guess what this record is.

Clue number one - Wishing to celebrate its 100th anniversary, this record was set by Thorntons in Alfreton, Derbyshire, England.

Clue number two - This record weighed in at 12,770 pounds and was 13 feet square.

Clue number three - Although it took months of planning, it was put together by 50 people over a ten-hour period of time.

Do you have it yet?

The record we're talking about is the world's largest chocolate bar. After it was poured it took three days for the thing to cool off.

Of course, there is one little, tiny question: what do you do with a chocolate bar that weighs in at over six tons? The people at Thorntons have thought of that, too. They're going to get a bunch of axes, chop it up, give it to customers and sell it off in pieces to support various charities.

Six tons of chocolate.

Even the most voracious of chocolate addicts would be hard pressed to put a dent in that thing.

This is pretty much the way it is for sinners and God's grace. We all know that each of us sins a lot. Multiply each of our sins by almost six billion people and you've got a mountain of transgressions: a mountain which seems insurmountable ... is insurmountable for folks like us.

But God is not a person like us. His love has no limitations. His grace is beyond calculation.

Because that is so, when Jesus shouldered our sins and took them to the cross, there was no contest. Jesus eliminated those sins, even as He died our death.

With His resurrection He has shown to all the world the insurmountable goodness of God's love.

It is a record which will never be broken. As the Scripture says, "Greater love has no man than this ..." (see John 15:13).

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the psalmist said, "Oh, how abundant is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You and worked for those who take refuge in You ... (Psalm 31:19a). Truly, dear Lord, there is no one who can come close to the goodness and grace You have given to us in our Redeemer. May I always see how wonderful He is and how blessed I am. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Prayer Request

Please include a young boy named Rich (son of Burket Fickle - she works for Dr. Brady DDS here in Warrenton). He has been, and is, very sick and keeps running high fevers and they don't seem to find out what is causing his illness. He has an appt. Dec. 12th with a specialist and they are praying for this Dr. to have the answers. Please pray God's will to be for the medical folks caring for Rich to have the wisdom to find the answers and then for healing to begin. Also prayers for Rich's mom, Burket, to have strength to deal with all of this stress. BTW, Rich is 9 years old and he also has autism. So alot of his medical care and testing is very stressful for him.

DEVOTION: For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given ... Isaiah 9:6a

Financially, for many people 2011 has not been a great year.

Still, there are always those who manage to do well. If you happen to be one of those, you may want to start putting your Christmas list together. If so, there is no better place to begin than the 2011 Christmas Book of Neiman Marcus.

They do have some interesting gifts. For example, you can get a yurt.

Yes, a yurt.

For those of you who don't know (and I was one), a yurt is a nomadic tent from Mongolia. Of course, this yurt is a cut above most. It is18 feet in diameter, hand-painted, packed chock full of one-of-a-kind, down-filled pillows. Oh, I shouldn't forget; this yurt has a crystal chandelier.

Perhaps, a yurt isn't exactly what you've been hoping for. If so, Neiman Marcus has other ideas.

For example, you could pick up a $125,000 library. This library has great carpets, artful bric-a-brac and paintings. Oh, it also has books, 250 books of your choice.

Still not enough? How about a flower show or a series of flower shows? For only $420,000 you and nine of your friends can be flown by private jet to the tulip festival in Switzerland and the Kifissia flower show in Athens and the Altera rose festival in Avignon. Of course, you won't want to miss the Chelsea flower show in London. That's included, too.

Well, has Neiman Marcus listed the gift that will make you say, "Oh, just what I wanted!"?

Perhaps not.

If that is the case, I would like to point out that Jesus, God's Gift to sinful humanity, was not universally wanted or appreciated when He came to earth.

Herod was the first to try and end the Savior's life. Herod was the first, but he certainly wasn't the only. The people of Nazareth didn't like what Jesus had to say, and they tried to eliminate their most famous Son. The Pharisees were always trying to hatch a plot to take out the Christ, as did the chief priests and the scribes.

Not a very good reaction to God's good Gift, was it? I pray your reaction is different. You see in Jesus we have been given both forgiveness and salvation. This, of course, makes Jesus the perfect Gift which everybody needs.

Only through His life, His sacrifice, His death and resurrection are we saved and heaven becomes a reality. By God's grace this Christmas may our repentant hearts say, "Oh, just what I wanted!"

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the world is filled with stuff I'm supposed to want: things which are supposed to make me feel good. I give thanks that You have -- in Jesus -- given me the Gift I need. In Him may I feel good, as well as saved. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Ruth Cantrell

Ruth Cantrell passed away at about 5:15 this morning after a very long battle with cancer. Please pray for her family and friends as they mourn the loss of a dear Christian woman.

Visitation and funeral will both be at St. John's on Thursday, December 1.

Visitation- 9-11am.

Funeral- 11am

Luncheon to follow funeral.

DEVOTION:
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. Colossians 1:28

Dena Christoffersen is a normal 13-year-old girl who lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

When I say she is normal, I mean Christoffersen is social, and she uses her cell phone to stay in contact with her friends, which are many. She faithfully, regularly -- almost religiously -- "texted" them. You know about texting, don't you? Texting is where you take about a half hour to type into your phone a message that would take ten seconds to speak. (Please don't write me and tell me how fast you can text and the advantages of the service. I'm just having some fun here.)

As I said, Christoffersen is social -- so social that her phone sent or received about 20,000 text messages in one month. The only difficulty is this: her parents don't have texting on their phone plan. Her dad, Gregg, was surprised, really, truly surprised when he opened his phone bill and it read: $4,750.

Christoffersen's dad is sure it won't happen again. The reason he's so sure is this: he destroyed his daughter's phone almost immediately after he got a good gander at the bill.

He ought to consider himself lucky. Last year one person racked up a bill of $68,505. While the amounts I've mentioned are extraordinary, having an overage is not. Each year the FCC gets tens of thousands of complaints from people who feel they've been taken advantage of.

If you are one of those people who have gone over your designated cell phone minutes, I've got good news for you. The major carriers have agreed to warn their customers when they're about to go over their plan's pre-arranged number of minutes.

Such a warning would be, I think, a good thing.

And so is the warning that Paul wrote about to the church in the book of Colossians. You see, Paul considered himself a man who had been entrusted with sharing the Lord's warning -- and His invitation.

The warning was telling people they were sinners and if they stayed in their sin they would be lost.

The invitation was that their debt had been eliminated by the Savior. Now all who believe in Him as their Redeemer receive forgiveness and eternal life.

The church is still extending the warning and the invitation from the Lord. Why? Because when Jesus comes again we want everyone -- because of Jesus -- to be declared debt free from sin.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, my sins have accumulated a debt I cannot begin to pay. That Your Son has taken that debt and eliminated it upon Calvary's cross is the greatest joy of life. Now may I, my family and my church share Your warning and invitation with others, so they may also know. This I pray in my Savior's Name. St. John's Group Email prayer request for Bill Sager

Please pray for Bill Sager (a former member at St. John's and good friend to many, especially Saturday night folks.) Bill has been sick for some time. He had a stroke a week or two ago. Thank You, Sue Ruhl

Below is the note we had from his Brother:

Hi Sue:

Bill's daughter, (Pattie), called me around 8 pm Saturday evening saying Bill was 'non-responsive', so she called 911 and they took him to the hospital. I called her cell phone Sunday morning around 9 am and she said they had been working with him all night and he was still 'non-responsive'. She said her brothers and sister were coming in a little later and would call me when she found out more. So around 5:15 pm Sunday she called and said the doctor said Bill had a major stroke. I will pass on any additional info as I get it.

Hope maybe you can pass this info to any friends he may have had at church in Warrenton.

Here is a prayer from Dianne Hance:

Hello God,

I called tonight to talk a little while, I need a friend who'll listen to my anxiety and trial.

You see, I can't quite make it through a day just on my own... I need your love to guide me, So I'll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep my family safe and sound. Come and fill their lives with confidence for whatever
fate they're bound.

Give me faith, dear God, to face each hour throughout the day, and not to worry over things I can't change in any way.

I thank you God for being home and listening to my call, for giving me such good advice when I stumble and fall.
Your number, God is the only one that answers every time. I never get a busy signal, never had to pay a dime.

So thank you, God for listening to my troubles and my sorrow. Good night, God, I love you too, and I'll call again
tomorrow!

I found this last night while searching for some poems my Dad had written before he passed. I received this as an e-mail in February, 2005. It
touched me so much that I just had to make a copy to keep. I think it will serve best if passed around. No, my Dad did not write this.

Some times in our lives, we will have pain, we will have sorrow. But, if we are wise, we realize theres always tomorrow. Lean on me, when your not strong, I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on. For, it won't be long, til I'm gonna need, somebody to lean on.
I spent a good part of the night singing to him to help manage the pain. I usually try to stay positive in these posts, but this has been an especially long night. These two particular chemo drugs he's getting this go-round usually cause the most discomfort. They have always been the tough ones to get through, but this time -with the radiation being administered simultaneously- is just beating him up. He woke up several times in the night crying out that his legs hurt. His head hurt. The nurse tried one drug after another. He begged me to pick him up and carry him to the emergency room. "You don't understand, I feel like I'm dying. You've got to give me something else!" Once all the possible drugs have been given to ameliorate the pain and he is still in pain, nothing is left but breathing, massage, changing bed positions, distractions and music. It seems we start there and finish there. Holding his hand.
Singing.

I wish that I could take the pain away. I know how it is to not be able to get comfortable to fall asleep. I have tears in my eyes as I was reading this. Kristin I truly adore you and Jonas. I know it must have been so hard to stay strong. But you know that this too shall pass. And there are brighter days ahead of this. Dude- (this is James F.) -I can't possibly imagine how terrible your pain is riht now. All I can say is to hold on with your mom and know that at school, we LOVE you and are always looking forward to the day in April or whenever when you will come back home to the orchestra room.
