FW: Leroy Hank Schmidt Health Update

Dear Friends:

This is Leroy's (Hank's) daughter, Linda Otto, sending you an update on my dad's current health situation.
For the past couple of weeks he has been at Surrey Place, a rehab facility of St. Luke's as he regains strength with Stage 4 lung cancer.
However, on Tuesday, March 13th, he was re-admitted to St. Luke's due to a blood clot in his lower right calf and excessive fluid retention in both of his lower legs and feet.
He is getting Heparin (a blood thinner) to dissolve the blood clot and a diuretic to help reduce the fluid retention.

He is is Room 7618 at St. Luke's and will very likely be there at least through Monday.
His landline number is 314-523-2787 but does have radiation daily and occupational and physical therapy daily as well, so he may not answer the phone.  Please call him again.

Please feel free to call MY CELL phone (314-807-4474) for any updates or changes in his "housing" at any time.  I will do my best to return your call just as soon as possible, if I am unable to answer immediately.

I thank you for all of the love and concern you have shown to him and prayers you have sent on his behalf during these past few weeks and I know he looks forward to hunting and or fishing with you or just visiting in the coming months.

He has many blessings and we are thankful to count you among them!

Linda

DEVOTION:  For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

William Holmes McGuffey was called the "schoolmaster to the nation." His readers, first published in 1836, sold 125 million copies, making his textbooks the most used in history.

In the forward to his work McGuffey wrote, "The Christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the great moral governor of the universe. On its doctrines are founded the particularities of our free institutions."

Of course, that was then and this is now.

Dexter Thielhelm, a second-grade student at a Sheboygan, Wisconsin, school found out just how much things have changed, when he brought his home-made valentines to class for Valentine's Day.

His valentines included a plastic water bottle filled with heart-shaped candies, a note which said, "Jesus Loves You" and the text of John 3:16. A teacher notified the principal of the "objectionable" valentines, and the principal said the religious message had to be removed.

In support of that principal, the school says the parents of Thielhelm's classmates should have been asked to give written permission for their children to receive the "valentine-with-a-religious-message." Others maintain that Thielhelm, who was not being disrespectful, has the right to express his personal and religious views. Authorities are trying to develop a policy that would define what religious messages would be allowed and what would be forbidden.

I wish them all the luck in the world. They're going to need it.

Why? Because the truth is this: Valentine, the fellow after whom Valentine's Day is named, is a Christian saint, who was martyred because he loved the Savior, who had first loved and saved him.

That means in order to divorce religion from Valentine's Day, the public school is going to have to get rid of Valentine. This means they are going to end up celebrating "Somebody Day."

It's generic and not very romantic, but that's what happens when you remove religion from a society which, in many ways, was shaped by people's faith in the Savior.

People of faith know we are not just a body and mind; we are not human animals. The Lord has also given us an immortal soul. That soul, along with the rest of us, is loved by the Lord.

Showing His love, God sent His only Son to save us. Through a perfect life, a rejection of temptation and the defeat of death, Jesus paid the penalty price our sins had incurred. Now all who are given faith in Him are saved. And that is a valentine present of love no principal or school board can take away.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, by Your love, as shown in the Savior, we are saved. May I, in all I do, reflect that love to others and most of all to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Luke Minx benefit concert for Jonas such a success! There were over 150 people that attended and they raised over $3000! Thank you to Luke Minx (and the whole Minx family), Joshua Aaron Mack, Living Stones Community Church, Rachel Holte with Salt and Light photography, the Lake Lotawana Optimists Club (who's donation was a substancial part of the money raised) and to our dear Fight the Fight friends, Shawn and Lynda James and Amy Brockelmeyer.
We were very worried that Jonas was not feeling up to attending, and he was pretty sure he couldn't even sit through an hour and half program --so we showed up only for the last 30 minutes. Luke put on wonderful performance, and all the adreneline had an uplifting affect on Jonas. Jonas clapped along with the music, socialized with friends, posed for pictures, signed autographs, and even took a turn at the microphone to thank everyone. I think everyone had a great time. We played Luke's CD all the way home singing HOLD ON over and over again. Thank you again, to Luke!!! What a genuine friend and talent. We look forward to hearing great things about you in the future! Keep us in the loop! = )
We were delighted to see so many of our Lake Lotawana family of friends there, several of my old piano students and old classmates of Jonas': The Mooreheads, Kim Black, Brad and Vicki Wood, Katie and Evan Roberts, Merle Bowers, Pauline and Natalie Rice, Gwen and Jaycee Davidson, Alex Krause, Emmie Ford and Kelsey Ellis, (and other friends not from LL- Dana and Rich, Terry, Alex, Dawson.)just to name a few. We don't usually get to see you all too much anymore, but we were so grateful to have you all turn out to show your love and support for Jonas! Thank you. Your kindness means so much to our whole family.
We kept the rest of the weekend low key, happy that all the excitement did not send him to the hospital. Lol. Today, however, Jonas went in for a regularly scheduled out-patient dose of chemo. When his lab results came back they showed that his red blood cell count was low so we had to stay the rest of the afternoon for a blood transfusion.
While we were at the hospital I got a phone call a woman named Jane Cavanaugh. She called to tell me about the Jake Cavanaugh Foundation named after her son who had Osteosarcoma, a similar condition to Ewings sarcoma (which is what Jonas has). Jake, a beautiful young man of 21, passed away about a year ago after battling his cancer for about 6 years. Jake and his mother also spent several months living down at MD Anderson (like we did) and even had several of the same doctors there that Jonas did. This Saturday the foundation is holding thier annual fundraiser, a St. Patrick's Day party at the Elk's Lodge in Blue Springs. They have chosen Jonas to be the beneficiary of this fundraiser. There will be food and drinks, live Irish music and an Irish dancing troupe will perform, along with a raffle and silent auction. We look forward to going - health permitting- to meet the Cavanaughs and to help celebrate Jake's life. We would love for you to join us! I will post a picture of the flyer in the photo gallery here. You can learn more about him and his foundation at http://www.jakecavanaugh.com/
Once again, I will have to catch up on more info tomorrow. I'm out of time.

DEVOTION:  Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16

If I read the above passage rightly, the eviler the day, the wiser we should walk.

And if that is the case, I have some concerns about a practice recently introduced at a number of congregations this year, including one in Cincinnati: Mount Healthy United Methodist Church.

Now I understand Pastor Patricia Anderson Cook was confident she was doing the right thing. Her confidence was based on the fact she had prayed and deliberated about it. She told the news: "I thought about what Jesus would do, and I'm pretty sure He wouldn't require a mass or a worship service. I'm pretty sure He was out there healing people and touching them with His fingers, even healing someone with spit and dirt, and healing their eyes."

Now while Pastor Cook didn't try to imitate the Savior by healing people, she did follow her Lord by not having an Ash Wednesday worship service, either. Instead of asking people to go into church, this past Ash Wednesday Pastor Cook decided to apply ashes to people by allowing them to drive up in their cars.

Yup, you heard that rightly.

On Ash Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m., a person could drive up to Mount Healthy United Methodist Church, and the pastor would apply ashes while he or she remained sitting in their car.

It was Pastor Cook's hope this would reach people who might have personal issues, mobility issues or just feel more comfortable worshipping in their cars and trucks. As she said, (my) "Jesus was an outdoors kind of guy. He came to where they (the people) were, and I want to come where people are comfortable."

It occurs to me that Pastor Cook, like so many others, has focused her attention on only one part of the Savior. It is true that Jesus came to people where they were. He worked with them at weddings and at wells, while they sat in a tree in Jericho or when He hung from a tree in Jerusalem. Sadly, too many people forget that when Jesus worked with these people, He didn't leave them as they were; He changed them.

Lent, including Ash Wednesday, is all about change. Lent is one of the times in the church calendar when Christians reflect on their sins and pray they might be given a repentant heart and a changed life. Most of all, Lent is a time to thank the Lord that Jesus left heaven and came to earth, so He might be the God-given sacrifice that would pay for our redemption.

And I'm not sure you can do that by driving up to a church and stopping for a few seconds.

Let me put it this way: if my son gave his life for you, I'd be pretty disappointed if all you did to show your appreciation would be to drive past the funeral home and wave. It would show me that my son's death just wasn't all that important to you. And, that, dear brothers and sisters ought not to be so.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You became one of us. This You did so we, and our eternal destiny, might be changed. Let us show our appreciation for Your sacrifice. In Your Name. Amen.

update on Libby Pailer

Libby's surgery is scheduled for tomorrow 3-15-12 first thing in the morning. It will be open heart surgery to repair or perhaps  replace the mitral valve and repair the tricusped valve.  Right now the blood is leaking backwards a lot every time her heart pumps and has enlarged one chamber of her heart quite a bit.  He said the surgery would last at least 5 hours and then she'll be in the ICU. If all goes well she'll stay in the hospital for 4-5 days after surgery. She should be back to normal activity 8 weeks after surgery which is an estimate of course.  Once she has healed she should feel a whole lot better than she has for a long time.  Maybe she'll even wait hand and foot on my dad (just the opposite as we all know ;-)

We were very impressed with the surgeon, he spent a lot of time explaining the procedure and we had a lesson in the anatomy of the heart.
Right now mom is in room 4094 at Mercy Heart Hospital  (St. John's for all of you who know St. Louis) if you want to see or talk to her today. After she's out of surgery and the ICU we'll give you her new room number. We appreciate your love and concern.  Keep those prayers coming.

Love and Blessings to all of you,  Larry (aka Bimmy, Grandpa & Papa) Renee & Teresa

DEVOTION:  Jesus said) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me." John 5:39

When I grew up, there was a television program called, You Are There.

Using a TV news format, the program took the viewer back in time to various historical events. The landing of the Hindenburg, the Salem witchcraft trials, the Gettysburg address, and even the trial of Jesus all were given an episode.

Now it appears You Are There is becoming a reality.

Let me explain. Recently, Daniel Wallace, professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, announced that seven New Testament papyri have been discovered. Six of those writings are from the second century and, one, a fragment of the book of Mark, probably originates in the first.

Simply stated, that means the papyrus was written during the time when eyewitnesses of Jesus' resurrection could still have been alive.

So, what does that mean to the average Joe and Jane?

Since this manuscript would be about 150 years older than any other New Testament Gospel fragment we have, it would imply that it probably is more accurate. That's because there would have been fewer copies made and, therefore, fewer errors made by the copyists.

Indeed, this manuscript moves us 150 years closer to the time our beloved Lord and Savior walked the earth.

Now the manuscripts are not due to be released until next year. I have not seen them, nor has anyone else I know. Even so, I am willing to go out on a limb and, without claiming any prophetic ability, make the following predictions: I predict after this manuscript has been compared with other ancient texts, there will be no glaring or major changes. Further, I predict this manuscript will offer no modifications that might impact any major or minor doctrine.

Once again, in making these predictions I lay no claim to having any prophetic gifts.

What I do claim is a belief that God's Word is God's Word, and the Holy Spirit has protected it, so we might be confident we have an accurate record of God's entire plan of salvation.

This is why, when the manuscripts are published, I pray you will join me in giving thanks that, once more, the Lord has told us the Savior's story of salvation is faithful and true. In fact we can do that right now.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the Holy Scriptures tell the story of how Your Son paid the price necessary to forgive our sins and save our souls. May we be truly grateful for all You have done, including giving us a book which can be trusted to tell the truth. In Jesus' Name I give thanks. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  What was placed in the ark of the covenant? In the book of Exodus only the tablets of the ten commandments are mentioned, later on a jar of manna, and Aaron's staff are also mentioned as being part of the contents.
(Dolores Deblaze is our winner.)

Here is a more detailed explanation from good ole wikipedia:
The Ark of the Covenant is a chest described in the Book of Exodus[1] as solely containing the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. According to some traditional interpretations of the Book of Exodus,[2] Book of Numbers,[3] and the Letter to the Hebrews[4] the Ark also contained Aaron's rod, a jar of manna and the first Torah scroll as written by Moses; however, the first of the Books of Kings says that at the time of king Solomon, the Ark contained only the two Tablets of the Law.[5] According to the Book of Exodus, the Ark was built at the command of God, in accordance with the instructions given to Moses on Mount Sinai.[6] God was said to have communicated with Moses "from between the two cherubim" on the Ark's cover.[7] _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Libby Pailer update

Lib had an aterial scan of the heart, an echo scope, but Cardiologist coulnd't get her to swallow the throat echo scanner. Her blood pressure came down after they took some fluid away from her lungs. That was causing the pressure on her chest. The Cardiologist said with certainty that the valve was operable. He didn't sound overly cautious. She was transferred to Mercy hospital on ballas road St. Louis at 4:00 PM. She will not be operated  on Tuesday. The surgeon has patients that are in bad shape and need to be operated as soon as possible. Tuesday will be more tests and rest. There is no garantee that she will be operated on wednesday either. I will up date when I know more, Thank all of you for your prayers. Keep "em coming.
Love to you all from Lib and I

more prayers for Libby Pailer

Hello everyone. This morning 3/11/12 at about 5:30 Am Lib woke me and said we have to go to the emergency room in Washington MO. She was admitted with Tightness of breath, upset stomach, and gurgling in her chest. They took a cardiagram. It showed some fibbulation. The worst was her blood pressure. It was 205 over 145. They spent the morning trying to get that down with meds and IVs. One time it would be lower then spike again. The cardiologist came in around 2PM. He told Lib,Teresa, Suzy, and I that she had leakage in the Mitral and aterial valves. They are monitoring her in ICU. Tommorrow they will take a throat to heart echo scope. That is to take a closer look at the valves. After that they will give her an aterial to heart scope. They will know more as to how to procede after the tests. That won't be until the afternoon. I will keep all informed. Keep up the prayers. My Libby has apositive outlook and is in good spirits. She says the Lord will take care of her. Please Please keep up your prayers.
