TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
October 21, 2018
________________________________________________________________________________
AS WE GATHER
Our Creator has woven the gift of rest into the fabric of His creation. If God Himself enjoyed His day of rest, His Sabbath, shouldn't we? Rest isn't a good work that we do to please God. Rest is the absence of our work; it's receiving the grace that is offered to us through Christ's work on the cross of Good Friday and the empty tomb of Easter. Today our gracious Father invites us to enter into His rest, His Sabbath, sharing in the benefits of what His Son has done. Jesus has already done the work—savor it! Rest in His presence as He serves you with His living and active Word and as He prepares His Table of grace for you to enjoy.

HYMN "Come unto Me, Ye Weary" 684
INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES Hebrews 4:9–10
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Pastor: There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,
People: for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from His.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Matthew 11:28
Pastor: Today our Father invites us to enter into His presence and experience the gift of His rest. Let us come before Him in repentance and faith.
(Silence for meditation upon God's Word and our need for Christ's forgiveness.)
Pastor: Holy God, merciful Father,
People: too often we pull away from the peace You promise to Your children. Forgive us for the ways in which our thoughts, our words, and our actions go against Your will for our lives. For our neglect of You and Your gift of grace, we ask for mercy. In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, whose work on the cross has secured our place in Your kingdom, renew us and lead us that we may rest in Your presence. Amen.
Pastor: Jesus says, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Receive the rest for your souls that only Jesus' work has secured. As your pastor, I announce God's saving grace to you and, in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Let us pray.
People: O God, our Creator, You set in order all things in heaven and on earth for the benefit of Your children. Grant that we rest from our labors and receive the peace Your Son has given; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

OFFERING
PREFACE

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136]

By Your saving grace, grant that we join with those who have come before us and enter into the rest of our Savior, who opened the kingdom of heaven to all who believe. DAILY DEVOTION AND CHURCH NEWS: Monday, Oct. 15, 2018
DEVOTION: Ecclesiastes 5:10-20 English Standard Version (ESV)
10 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.
13 There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand.15 As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger.
18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment[a] in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot.19 Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.
