DEVOTION:  Psalm 136:1-9  English Standard Version (ESV)

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever

136 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

to him who alone does great wonders,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who by understanding made the heavens,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who spread out the earth above the waters,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who made the great lights,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
the sun to rule over the day,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
the moon and stars to rule over the night,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
24 and rescued us from our foes,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
25 he who gives food to all flesh,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.

There is nothing better than knowing we have a God whose love is both steadfast and eternal.  It's not conditional.  It's not going to fade away.  He won't get angry or bitter.  He won't have wanderlust and be looking for the next and newest thing.  He is as steady as a couple who's been married for sixty years and are still in love.  He's as sure as the sun coming up every morning.  He as faithful as……  well there is no comparison, because no one and nothing is more faithful than he is.

This passage repeats the same line over and over, because we need that reminder over and over every minute of every day.  We need to know that when our world is crumbling all around us, because of sin, death, and the devil; we have a God whose steadfast love endures forever.

The longer you live on earth, the more you see your own faults, failures and shortcomings.   You see that if it's up to you, you are in trouble.  If it's all up to God, everything is sure, certain, complete and good.

Praise the Lord that His steadfast love endures forever and that nothing is ever going to separate you from His love in Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your steadfast eternal love.  I will rest in it today.  Amen.
