Libby Pailer update

Hello to all,

I just left mom at Mercy Skilled Nursing facility.  She did really well with the transfer. She's very happy to have all the tubes, wires extra tape etc. off of her body.  I could see that she has a lot more strength today and is determined to do what they say as far as rehab exercises etc.  She has a roommate - seems to be a very nice lady who has some other kind of heart issues.

Mom is in Room 79 - bed 1 or A and will probably be there a week.  That depends on how she's coming along with rehab.  The address is 12120 Conway Rd, Saint Louis, MO 63141 which is across the road from Mercy Hospital.  She has a phone in her room but really does not feel like talking too much yet.
Thank you once again for the continual prayers and support.

Love and blessings, Teresa, Larry & Renee

Libby Pailer update

from Larry Pailer

Well folks! It doesn't look like Lib is coming home for a while. This morning (Tuesday) she had a dizzy spell while doing her physical exercises. The Social nurse and floor nurse advised her to take rehab for a few days. To this, like anyone else she wanted to go home. After they left, Teresa and I talked to her and she agreed to go. They will move her to a Rehab facility shortly. Which one is being decided by availability of a room. I will keep you all advised when I know. It is hard on her but it is the best and safest way for her to gain strenght and peace of mind. Our lord is guiding her and He is her divine Lord and God. Your prayers are our guiding force please please keep them up. May god's blessing be upon each and everyone. Thank you Lib and Larry pailer

DEVOTION:  (God says) "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me. But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to recite My statutes or take My covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast My words behind you." Psalm 50:15-17

The topic for today's Daily Devotion was brought to my attention by Mr. David Lanius, friend and faithful worker at the headquarters of Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Chardon High School in Ohio is blessed to have a big man on its staff.

At six feet, two inches and 300 pounds, Chardon, Ohio's, Assistant Coach Frank Hall truly is a big man. But you should know that his physical size is the least of the qualities which make him big. If you've been following the news, you may have heard of the coach. He's the teacher who stood up in the Chardon High cafeteria when a student-gunman opened fire.

The coach may be a big man, but even a big man can be cut down when he goes up against a pistol. That is a fact of life, but that fact didn't stop Hall from standing up, calling out and walking toward the gunman, from chasing the murderer out of the school.

That day's courage makes Hall a big man.

That's the story the news programs shared about Coach Hall. What the media didn't share is that the actions of the coach on that day of death were only a reflection of the kind of big man he has always been.

You see, Coach Hall is a Christian man, a man of faith.

Those who know him say he is the kind of fellow who has always gone out of his way to help others. He is the kind of man who has adopted four children, brought them into his family and is raising them as God's children.

A few weeks ago the media said that Coach Hall had probably saved the lives of other students. They called him a "hero." I would agree. He most certainly is that. But Hall's heroism should not be limited to a few seconds in a high school lunch room. He has always been a hero of faith.

The wonderful thing is this: there are many other such heroes in our congregations.

True, these other heroes may not face a gunman intent on murder; they may not be called upon to put their lives on the line, by looking down a pistol barrel. Even so, they are heroes.

They are heroes because, in a world which often makes fun of good men, they still do what is right; their actions are decided by their faith in the Savior who gave His life, so they might be forgiven and saved.

These men, thankful for what Jesus has done, try to follow Jesus' example. These men are not only willing to die for others, they are willing to live every day of their lives for others.

That is what a man does when he really knows the Savior.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in a world filled with trouble and terror, we pray You will raise up men, Christian men, who will try to reflect the Savior's strength and spirit of sacrifice to those around them, to those who come after them. This we pray in Jesus' Name. Amen.

CATECHISM:
Question: Why is it called the Apostles' Creed?
Answer: It is called the Apostles' Creed, not because it was written by the Apostles' themsevles, but because it states briefly the doctrine (teaching) which God gave through the apostles in the Bible.  The creed is trinitarian because the Scriptures reveal God as triune,  Christians are baptized in the name of the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Libby Pailer update

I saw Lib this morning. She had a good breakfast and ate half a grilled cheese sandwich, fruit and apple juice for lunch. The nurse and i walked her down the corridor and back. Her steps were normal. She has to keep a straight back and that bothers her some. They did take out the neck IV and one on her left wrist. Little by little the tubes and wires are coming out. Her heart beat is a little low so they cut out one of her Beta blockers . When I left her blood pressure was 128 over 81. That is amazing for her because it was always real high. The Lord is blessing us with her recovery. Looks as if she might get to come home Tuesday. That leaves me in charge. Better pray harder Ha! Ha!. Hey news I won a game of scrabble from my grand daughter in the hospital. Thanks for the prayers and keep them coming. Love Larry and Lib

Good Afternoon Friends and Family -

Mom came out of surgery yesterday morning at ~10:30 am and did well.  She got rid of several tubes today, but still has her chest tube in place.   This morning she walked the halls with her physical therapist.  She may get to go home Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

Last night she stayed in the Observation Unit (O.U.) for thoracic surgery on 7th floor of Barnes Jewish Hospital in downtown St. Louis, and was moved to room 7101-A this afternoon.

We can't thank you enough for the multitude of love and supportive prayers!!

Libby Pailer update 8:45 3-16-12

From Libby's daughter Teresa

Hello friends & family,

Mom did have to go back into surgery yesterday around 2:00 p.m. for a little while.  Dr. Blucher the surgeon wanted to err on the side of caution and stop the bleeding. He said it took one stitch in the incision and that took care of it.  We were/are grateful mom had not come around so she did not know she went in for round 2.  We were allowed to peek in at her that afternoon and then we came home.  We called the nurse around 8:30 and were told she was coming out of the anestethia but not awake yet.  We called this morning (all three of us slept much better last night BTW) at 7:30 a.m. and Renee talked to the nurse.  They took the ventilator out around midnight and mom is not in pain.  The nurse was in mom's room so Renee got to talk to her for a minute and she said she was "OK,  well I don't know how I am..."  We found out we can see her after 9:30 a.m. today.

We know she's come through this so well because of the great doctors and staff at Mercy and mostly because of all of you praying and thinking about her.  My dad is doing pretty well - can't get him to not worry so much but that will be better after mom is at home. I'll keep you updated.

Love and Blessings Teresa, Larry & Renee

FW: Leroy Hank Schmidt Health Update

Dear Friends:

This is Leroy's (Hank's) daughter, Linda Otto, sending you an update on my dad's current health situation.
For the past couple of weeks he has been at Surrey Place, a rehab facility of St. Luke's as he regains strength with Stage 4 lung cancer.
However, on Tuesday, March 13th, he was re-admitted to St. Luke's due to a blood clot in his lower right calf and excessive fluid retention in both of his lower legs and feet.
He is getting Heparin (a blood thinner) to dissolve the blood clot and a diuretic to help reduce the fluid retention.

He is is Room 7618 at St. Luke's and will very likely be there at least through Monday.
His landline number is 314-523-2787 but does have radiation daily and occupational and physical therapy daily as well, so he may not answer the phone.  Please call him again.

Please feel free to call MY CELL phone (314-807-4474) for any updates or changes in his "housing" at any time.  I will do my best to return your call just as soon as possible, if I am unable to answer immediately.

I thank you for all of the love and concern you have shown to him and prayers you have sent on his behalf during these past few weeks and I know he looks forward to hunting and or fishing with you or just visiting in the coming months.

He has many blessings and we are thankful to count you among them!

DEVOTION:  For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

William Holmes McGuffey was called the "schoolmaster to the nation." His readers, first published in 1836, sold 125 million copies, making his textbooks the most used in history.

In the forward to his work McGuffey wrote, "The Christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the great moral governor of the universe. On its doctrines are founded the particularities of our free institutions."

Of course, that was then and this is now.

Dexter Thielhelm, a second-grade student at a Sheboygan, Wisconsin, school found out just how much things have changed, when he brought his home-made valentines to class for Valentine's Day.

His valentines included a plastic water bottle filled with heart-shaped candies, a note which said, "Jesus Loves You" and the text of John 3:16. A teacher notified the principal of the "objectionable" valentines, and the principal said the religious message had to be removed.

In support of that principal, the school says the parents of Thielhelm's classmates should have been asked to give written permission for their children to receive the "valentine-with-a-religious-message." Others maintain that Thielhelm, who was not being disrespectful, has the right to express his personal and religious views. Authorities are trying to develop a policy that would define what religious messages would be allowed and what would be forbidden.

I wish them all the luck in the world. They're going to need it.

Why? Because the truth is this: Valentine, the fellow after whom Valentine's Day is named, is a Christian saint, who was martyred because he loved the Savior, who had first loved and saved him.

That means in order to divorce religion from Valentine's Day, the public school is going to have to get rid of Valentine. This means they are going to end up celebrating "Somebody Day."

It's generic and not very romantic, but that's what happens when you remove religion from a society which, in many ways, was shaped by people's faith in the Savior.

People of faith know we are not just a body and mind; we are not human animals. The Lord has also given us an immortal soul. That soul, along with the rest of us, is loved by the Lord.

Showing His love, God sent His only Son to save us. Through a perfect life, a rejection of temptation and the defeat of death, Jesus paid the penalty price our sins had incurred. Now all who are given faith in Him are saved. And that is a valentine present of love no principal or school board can take away.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, by Your love, as shown in the Savior, we are saved. May I, in all I do, reflect that love to others and most of all to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Luke Minx benefit concert for Jonas such a success! There were over 150 people that attended and they raised over $3000! Thank you to Luke Minx (and the whole Minx family), Joshua Aaron Mack, Living Stones Community Church, Rachel Holte with Salt and Light photography, the Lake Lotawana Optimists Club (who's donation was a substancial part of the money raised) and to our dear Fight the Fight friends, Shawn and Lynda James and Amy Brockelmeyer.
We were very worried that Jonas was not feeling up to attending, and he was pretty sure he couldn't even sit through an hour and half program --so we showed up only for the last 30 minutes. Luke put on wonderful performance, and all the adreneline had an uplifting affect on Jonas. Jonas clapped along with the music, socialized with friends, posed for pictures, signed autographs, and even took a turn at the microphone to thank everyone. I think everyone had a great time. We played Luke's CD all the way home singing HOLD ON over and over again. Thank you again, to Luke!!! What a genuine friend and talent. We look forward to hearing great things about you in the future! Keep us in the loop! = )
We were delighted to see so many of our Lake Lotawana family of friends there, several of my old piano students and old classmates of Jonas': The Mooreheads, Kim Black, Brad and Vicki Wood, Katie and Evan Roberts, Merle Bowers, Pauline and Natalie Rice, Gwen and Jaycee Davidson, Alex Krause, Emmie Ford and Kelsey Ellis, (and other friends not from LL- Dana and Rich, Terry, Alex, Dawson.)just to name a few. We don't usually get to see you all too much anymore, but we were so grateful to have you all turn out to show your love and support for Jonas! Thank you. Your kindness means so much to our whole family.
We kept the rest of the weekend low key, happy that all the excitement did not send him to the hospital. Lol. Today, however, Jonas went in for a regularly scheduled out-patient dose of chemo. When his lab results came back they showed that his red blood cell count was low so we had to stay the rest of the afternoon for a blood transfusion.
While we were at the hospital I got a phone call a woman named Jane Cavanaugh. She called to tell me about the Jake Cavanaugh Foundation named after her son who had Osteosarcoma, a similar condition to Ewings sarcoma (which is what Jonas has). Jake, a beautiful young man of 21, passed away about a year ago after battling his cancer for about 6 years. Jake and his mother also spent several months living down at MD Anderson (like we did) and even had several of the same doctors there that Jonas did. This Saturday the foundation is holding thier annual fundraiser, a St. Patrick's Day party at the Elk's Lodge in Blue Springs. They have chosen Jonas to be the beneficiary of this fundraiser. There will be food and drinks, live Irish music and an Irish dancing troupe will perform, along with a raffle and silent auction. We look forward to going - health permitting- to meet the Cavanaughs and to help celebrate Jake's life. We would love for you to join us! I will post a picture of the flyer in the photo gallery here. You can learn more about him and his foundation at http://www.jakecavanaugh.com/
Once again, I will have to catch up on more info tomorrow. I'm out of time.

DEVOTION:  Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16

If I read the above passage rightly, the eviler the day, the wiser we should walk.

And if that is the case, I have some concerns about a practice recently introduced at a number of congregations this year, including one in Cincinnati: Mount Healthy United Methodist Church.

Now I understand Pastor Patricia Anderson Cook was confident she was doing the right thing. Her confidence was based on the fact she had prayed and deliberated about it. She told the news: "I thought about what Jesus would do, and I'm pretty sure He wouldn't require a mass or a worship service. I'm pretty sure He was out there healing people and touching them with His fingers, even healing someone with spit and dirt, and healing their eyes."

Now while Pastor Cook didn't try to imitate the Savior by healing people, she did follow her Lord by not having an Ash Wednesday worship service, either. Instead of asking people to go into church, this past Ash Wednesday Pastor Cook decided to apply ashes to people by allowing them to drive up in their cars.

Yup, you heard that rightly.

On Ash Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m., a person could drive up to Mount Healthy United Methodist Church, and the pastor would apply ashes while he or she remained sitting in their car.

It was Pastor Cook's hope this would reach people who might have personal issues, mobility issues or just feel more comfortable worshipping in their cars and trucks. As she said, (my) "Jesus was an outdoors kind of guy. He came to where they (the people) were, and I want to come where people are comfortable."

It occurs to me that Pastor Cook, like so many others, has focused her attention on only one part of the Savior. It is true that Jesus came to people where they were. He worked with them at weddings and at wells, while they sat in a tree in Jericho or when He hung from a tree in Jerusalem. Sadly, too many people forget that when Jesus worked with these people, He didn't leave them as they were; He changed them.

Lent, including Ash Wednesday, is all about change. Lent is one of the times in the church calendar when Christians reflect on their sins and pray they might be given a repentant heart and a changed life. Most of all, Lent is a time to thank the Lord that Jesus left heaven and came to earth, so He might be the God-given sacrifice that would pay for our redemption.

And I'm not sure you can do that by driving up to a church and stopping for a few seconds.

Let me put it this way: if my son gave his life for you, I'd be pretty disappointed if all you did to show your appreciation would be to drive past the funeral home and wave. It would show me that my son's death just wasn't all that important to you. And, that, dear brothers and sisters ought not to be so.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You became one of us. This You did so we, and our eternal destiny, might be changed. Let us show our appreciation for Your sacrifice. In Your Name. Amen.
