10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.”
13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. 1 Cor. 1:10-17
3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?
5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building. 1 Cor. 3:3-9
Why did you join the church you joined? Unfortunately, many will say, "because I love the pastor." or "because the pastor preaches such good sermons." I say "unfortunately" because that is the wrong reason to join a church. What if the pastor leaves for another church? Does that mean you have license to leave too? What if the pastor does something to tick you off as many pastors are prone to do at one time or another? Can you leave then? What if the pastor has one bad sermon that you don't like or don't particularly agree with? What then?
There are many reasons to join a church, but there is only one reason that will work. If you join a church because they teach God's Word and have a set of beliefs that completely agree with Scripture then you have done the right thing. Why? Because all of those other things can change in an instant. The people may be nice one week and mean the next. The seats might be comfortable, but then they decide to change them because someone else thought they were uncomfortable. The music might be great, but then the music leader leaves or someone hits a few wrong notes, or they sing a song you don't like.
The Word of God does not change. It is steadfast and sure. So if the church teaches what is steadfast and sure you have found a good church. You have found something worthwhile for sticking around. Don't get caught up in who the pastor is or how fancy the sanctuary is. Get caught up in Christ and His Word! Get caught up in the gifts given freely for you to receive and grow! Get caught up in God's law that condemns and His Gospel that saves! Get caught up in the truth!
Let us pray: Lord God, help us not to get caught up in the earthly things of the church, but help us to rely solely on Your precious and true Word. Amen.
