DEVOTION: Jeremiah 25:7-11
7 Yet you have not listened to me, declares the Lord, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.8 "Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, 9 behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the Lord, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation.
I am working through my Daily Bible in a year and this time of the year it always gets a little sad, because I am in the middle of Jeremiah, the weeping prophet. In our passage above he is proclaiming the judgment that the Lord has pronounced upon Israel. There is nothing promising in any of the verses, except that there will be an end to the captivity when God destroys Babylon.
It is especially verses like today that help me to be thankful for the grace, mercy, and peace I have in Christ. I know that, even though I continually mess up and follow other gods of wood, paper, and stone, my Lord and God will not forsake me. He will keep me in His grace because of the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus.
Prayer: Lord God, we thank you for keeping your wrath and destruction from us. Help us to live in You! Amen.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________MONDAY'S QUIZ: Who was Habakkuk? Habakkuk was a prophet who was preaching around the same time as Jeremiah. He wanted to know why Israel was not punished for their sins. When God told him Babylon would punish Israel, Habakkuk asked how Babylonians who were evil could punish God's people. God responded that Israel would be punished but a faithful would be rewarded. (Thanks Denise, Dianne, and Pam)
