DEVOTION:  Psalm 46 (ESV)

"God Is Our Fortress" To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth.[a] A Song.

46 God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present[b] help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!"
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Where is your refuge?  Is it your easy chair, your bed under the covers, a deer stand, your work desk, your shop, the woods, the golf course?

A refuge for one might be a hell hole for another when it comes to our earthly refuges.  I can't say that in bed, under the covers is a place where I like to stay for a long time.  I'd be lost in a workshop with all sorts of tools that are foreign to me.  Give me some baling twine and duct tape instead.

There is one place where I, and every Christian can find true, real, and lasting refuge and that's with Christ.  The Lord is your only real refuge and strength.  Satan can get to you anywhere else, he can't get to you when you are with Christ.

You may be tormented by feelings of guilt over a relationship that you messed up, or something you did or didn't do.  You won't find refuge from that until you run to Christ, your mighty fortress.

I urge you to believe and find comfort in your might fortress, your refuge, Jesus today!  Stop looking for refuge in your fun activities, your newest toy, your next earthly relationship, or your nest paycheck  Those things will either fade away or crumble.

Find your refuge in God's Word.  Find your true refuge in the communion of saints namely the Christian church.  Find your refuge in the Lord's body and blood that you eat and drink at the altar.  Find your refuge in daily conversation and in time spent with the Lord in prayer.  Find your refuge in JESUS CHRIST.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being our refuge and strength and a very present help in every trouble.  Help us to live in that peace for life everlasting.  Amen.

DEVOTION:

Luke 21:5-28 (ESV)

"Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple"

And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, "As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." And they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?" And he said, "See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once."

"Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution"

10 Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers[a] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.

"Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem"

20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. 23 Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

"The Coming of the Son of Man"

25 "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Most of the time I live my life day to day like everyone else.  I don't much think about the end of the world or even the end off my own life.  On occasion I think about my own end of  life, especially as I'm dealing with hospital visits and funerals, but most of the time I think about what I'm going to have for lunch, where I have to be, or what I have to do next.

In the message above Jesus tells us what it's going to be like, but he doesn't tell us to freak out or to despair.  He tells us to raise our heads up because our redemption is drawing near.   In other words, take it like a man because it is not the end but only the beginning of eternal life for you and for all who believe.

As we see all the evil going on in the world and as we even suffer because of it, we rejoice, because we know that these are the signs that the Lord is with us and that we are safe in his arms.  He flat out told the disciples that they would be put to death, but that not even a hair on their heads will perish.

Stay strong in your faith people! Know that the Lord loves you!  Know that he cares for you!  Know that he will keep you safe from the devil's schemes.  Know that you will suffer while you are here on the earth, but that suffering won't produce anything less that perseverance which leads to eternal life!

Let us pray: Lord, bless us as we see the signs all around us.  Givve us the peace that passes all understanding which you alone provide so that, in spite of all our trouble we may live in the peace that comes with faith in you. Amen.

DEVOTION:  2 Thessalonians 3:1-13 (ESV)

"Pray for Us"

Finally, brothers,[a] pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,[b] as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.[c] And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

"Warning Against Idleness"

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.[d]

13 As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.

We often have prayer requests don't we?  I get tons of people requesting me to pray for them, for their families, for any number of reasons.  What good does it do?

Paul had a prayer request of the Thessalonians.  His request was that they pray that the "Word of the Lord may speed ahead".   What a great request.

When we don't pray, we tend to slip further and further away from God and we forget how much God is in charge of us and of the whole world.

We all need to pray for our nation today.  We need to simply pray that God's will be done, first so that we remember that God is the one in charge, and secondly so that we and the rest of our nation can conform our lives more and more each day to God's Word.

Let us pray: Lord, Thy will be done in America as it is in heaven.  Give us Your mind and Your will that we may truly be Your disciples and live as You want us to live.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Malachi 4 (ESV)

The Great Day of the Lord

"For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.

"Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules[b] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."

Depending on your political affiliation, some might think that God is talking about today, election day, in the passage above.  Believe me, it'd be great if it was, then we wouldn't have to worry about these things anymore.

No, what God, through Malachi, is talking about in the passage above is Judgment Day.  It is not a day that is going to be brought about by man.  It isn't even dependent on man's actions.  This is God's day.

When we pray, "Thy kingdom come", that's what we are praying for.  We are praying for Him to destroy all evil and re-establish his throne forever!  We are praying that he comes to judge the living and the dead.  We are praying that we will finally see him face to face and live forever with him.

I urge you to pray for our nation today as you go to the polls and elect your candidates and vote on the amendments.  Pray that those who have turned away from the Lord will turn back to him, repent, and be saved.  Pray that all Christians everywhere will be zealous for the proclamation of the Gospel and that we will do what the Lord Jesus commanded us to do, love, forgive, and make disciples.  Most of all pray, "Thy kingdom come!"

Let us pray:  Lord, Thy kingdom come in our nation, our world, in my home, my church, and my heart.  Amen.
