DEVOTION: Malachi 4 (ESV)
The Great Day of the Lord
4 "For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. 3 And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.
4 "Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules[b] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.
5 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."
Depending on your political affiliation, some might think that God is talking about today, election day, in the passage above. Believe me, it'd be great if it was, then we wouldn't have to worry about these things anymore.
No, what God, through Malachi, is talking about in the passage above is Judgment Day. It is not a day that is going to be brought about by man. It isn't even dependent on man's actions. This is God's day.
When we pray, "Thy kingdom come", that's what we are praying for. We are praying for Him to destroy all evil and re-establish his throne forever! We are praying that he comes to judge the living and the dead. We are praying that we will finally see him face to face and live forever with him.
I urge you to pray for our nation today as you go to the polls and elect your candidates and vote on the amendments. Pray that those who have turned away from the Lord will turn back to him, repent, and be saved. Pray that all Christians everywhere will be zealous for the proclamation of the Gospel and that we will do what the Lord Jesus commanded us to do, love, forgive, and make disciples. Most of all pray, "Thy kingdom come!"
Let us pray: Lord, Thy kingdom come in our nation, our world, in my home, my church, and my heart. Amen.
